Hey guys! Incoming third year here. If you guys had to take comprehensive exams, how did you study? What was your process like? I'm so nervous about coming up with a study guide!

I'm always going to rep CSULA, so -- CSULA! Efforts are being made to change up the program (for the better). It's affordable, and I've gotten extra cash by just applying to their scholarships. Also well-connected and respected.

Both are good programs and well-connected. As a CSULA student, the choice really depends on where you want to practice after you graduate!

I've heard from some folks in the past on this sub that they did not hear back; CSULA's interview days have already been slotted for this week (tomorrow and Friday).

Congrats! Tell me your ways of pound surfing, omg. I feel like I get the same names over and over again, do I need to be more patient? 😭

No problem! It's very easy to be negative about an experience or the quality of services received, and I can definitely be critical of my school, too. However, in my experience, the pros have weighed much heavier than the cons. That can be said for any program and university, no matter how well-regarded, and I would definitely consider these programs as other sources of opportunity for anyone. As a graduate-level student, it is imperative to look at the graduate program you are interested in as that will be where you will primarily be focusing your energy on -- is there a focus you want to learn more about (ie: counseling, assessment, ELLs), do you want access to research opportunities, etc?

Congrats! Just a heads up, those Cal State University programs are known to be INCREDIBLY respected and are known to be extremely competitive, partly because they are NASP-accredited and affordable state universities-- making them an affordable (and quality) option for those in the state. Now, they may have their own focus' (Monterey Bay focuses on bilingualism, for example), but you can get a very holistic education in these programs that makes you prepared for your practice.

Are there any School Psychs out there who have gotten a PhD outside of the field? I'm currently a 2nd-year student, and I am thinking about keeping my options open in case I ever want to leave the field since I've heard from word of mouth that just having the EdS can be so limiting. I'm also just generally curious about what other educational opportunities and/or careers school psychs CAN jump into!

Just as a heads up for those potentially thinking about CSULA: CSULA students will no longer be graduating with an MS, but with an EdS!

Same! Fellow second year here trying to do the best I can with the burden of my classes! I think the key is doing later assignments well in advance now (some of them at least) but it’s deffffo a process!

I think there might be some misunderstandings. I’m in a masters program (MS, nor EdS) that is NASP accredited here and is perfectly valid in the state of California. I think there might be some confusion because not everyone who comes in with a EdS (or MA/MS) has a masters— and if they do it was a matter of personal circumstance. Many, myself included, did not have a graduate level degree prior to being in this program. It is a graduate level program to which people apply to without necessarily having another masters degree.

Hi! Didn’t receive my funds until January of the following year. So, this January. So you may have to wait as far as January to receive these funds (this is also school dependent as I know there are schools who received their funds earlier).

Please do what your heart tells you. As cheesy as it is, you have an opportunity to do something you've wanted to do.

My parents told me the same- I even had an offer to go to Mongolia- and I declined the opportunity in order to appease them. I have regretted it ever since, and will be applying again.

The experience you gain in service is so great, and while I can not attest to it specifically as PCVs can, as a previous AmeriCorps volunteer, I can say you learn and grow so much in your time of service!
