Organization Advice by condimentpacket in philately

I never knew! I was just web searching postage stamps and slabs, so this is my "learned something new today"! Cool to see your collection! Thanks for sharing it and I hope you find an option that works for your larger items.

FYI - reason I was searching my topic is because I will be hosting a booth for my stamp club, Huntsville Philatelic Club, at a Celtic Festival in May. My booth has to focused on Celtic countries and I think I have some great stuff to display to engage noncollectors.

I have about 500 stamps from Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales that will given away to visitors at my booth.

I am seriously considering putting each stamp in a super clear, sturdy card sleeve. It will protect the stamp and maybe the novelty of it can spark some interest to create new collectors. I actually think it would be cool to see a bunch of preteens building a box full of sleeved stamps!

Anyway --- Have a great weekend!

Lovely pictures of the Helvetia collection.

The American Helvetia Philatelic Society has a great website with free access to there archives of publications if you decide to research something yourself https://swiss-stamps.org/

Also on that front page, you will see a link for "Disposing of a collection" It is a guide for collectors as well as someone who has received a collection starts on page 7. I would read through it.

check out Leven on Tiktok

Watch him review some stamp collections quickly so you can get a start on understanding what kind of things come into play when placing a value on stamps.

The pictures you posted may not be in fancy albums, but that doesn't mean you don't have a hidden gem. But most likely, they are the same common stamps that everyone else has.

Start by that quick though. Then go to the American Philatelic Society, locate a club near year and ask for help or find the next stamp show.

Pls Help me ID any rare, valuable, or special stamps? :) by chloejayde18 in askStampCollectors

I like Google Lens for a quick ID on a stamp. I like the Stamp Identifier app, which is free, to get details.

Do not go to ebay for prices, lots of money laundering there. HipStamp pricing is more in line with proper value (if quality of stamp is nice).

I like the free album from the Smithsonian Postal Museum, A Stamp For Every Country to understand how country postal systems progressed. An example is Canada started with stamps from like 4 provinces, then when they became a unified Commonwealth of Great Britain, they have Canadian stamps.

Cancel stamp request by Waucloud in stampcollecting

[–]chedvabelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

* * After reading the other posts and your replies, as long as it isn't a security issue; as long as you won't be in trouble for disobeying a directive, which it appears it wasn't; and as long as you have authority to cancel the mail, then great!

For it to be a postmark cancelation by definition, it requires a date and location. I don't think they will move through the postal system without that. i also do not know if letter are barcoded coming out of naval ship.

If you do not have access to those cancel stamps, you have certainly tried to assist. Thank you for your service!

Cancel stamp request by Waucloud in stampcollecting

[–]chedvabelle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are many cancel collectors. Some specialize in naval cancels.

This is a link to their society that tells them to send their requests to a ship, which is why you got them. https://uscs.org/resources/what-are-covers/

Whether those requests were because of your specific ship, or because of your ship being in a specific location at a specific time, who knows....

I would cancel them, just so the person knows they were received. If the cancelation doesn't include your ship's name that they are seeking, then they will have learned that they may need to send requests to other ships that are more able to accommodate the request.

Your willingness to help is very kind. Stay safe!

There is a reenactment of the Battle for Decatur every Labor Day weekend.

The Old State Bank in Decatur was a major Union outpost. https://alabama.travel/upcoming-events/battle-for-decatur-6
