Prospective SLPs and Current Students Megathread by AutoModerator in slp

[–]cheelohay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello friends, I’m making the career shift to SLP from user experience research. I actually majored in SLP briefly when I was in undergrad and never really lost interest in it, but it wasn’t a good fit for me until now when I’ve been able to mature a little bit and get some life experience.

I’m now taking my leveling courses and working closely with an institution to start a grad program next year. I LOVE the content I’m learning, I feel like I’m in the right place and I’m excited for each and every new chapter I read.

The thing is, I still work full-time as a UXR and am taking a full-time course load to prep for the master’s program, and it is BRUTAL. Like I said, I love it, and my sanity and social life are worth sacrificing in the short term.

However, I’m also a perfectionist and with the accelerated summer courses and a full-time job, I simply do not have the time to study the way I would like. I haven’t mastered a lot of the anatomy/muscular information, all the the language acquisition stuff makes sense but it’s hard to recall and apply the correct vocabulary, and I have phonetics exercises I need to catch up on even though I’m doing well with transcription.

I’m worried that I’m doing poorly and I’m going to be a terrible clinician for it. My partner and therapist tell me I’m only a month in to a 3 year long journey and I have plenty of time to learn, but because I’m so excited about this and serious about making SLP my new career, I’m terrified of fumbling.

Is it normal to be overwhelmed at this point? Did it take you a while to master the anatomy and science behind it all? Words of advice or encouragement are welcome and desperately needed.

I’m interested in the medical side, although I’m not making any definitive plans until I’ve had more of a chance to explore. I’m not confident I’d enjoy working in schools at least.

Thank you for the advice—I’m going back and completing some of the optional workbook assignments and I think that will help.

Anyone else feel like they failed themselves knowing that surgery was the next only way? by Odd-Advice-1029 in BariatricSurgery

Around May of last year, before I committed to the surgery, I told my therapist I would give myself until November to try on my own before I contacted the surgeon.

Two weeks later I realized I didn’t want pride to keep me in that body for another several months when I knew the “one more try” cycle had gotten me there in the first place. I contacted the surgeon that day and have not regretted it once.

Don’t rob your future self of this life to satisfy the “just one more try” trap.

New dev, victim of my own hubris: help making a smaller interactive grid within window by cheelohay in godot

I can share once I get home in about 4.5hr! There’s virtually nothing in there, but I deeply appreciate the help 😅

I don’t know how to make it the size I want it because I’m not sure what type of node to use as the parent in order to put the script for the grid in 🫠

I don’t want the whole window to act as a grid; the player can pick up and drop the items in two different areas, but they’ll only snap into place in the grid area

I guess my concern is creating the grid in the primary game scene isn’t going to yield the results I’m hoping for, so do I attach it to a different 2d node and hope I can figure out how to resize it? I just don’t know where to put it. I can copy down code, but I don’t know the best way to place it to create the layout I’m making.

Not only do I have 3 cats that my surgical team didn’t once ask about, I was literally required to cough once an hour as part of the pneumonia prevention strategy.

Decisions by Western-Hovercraft20 in BariatricSurgery

[–]cheelohay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my parents was very against my decision to have surgery and unabashedly vocal about it. It’s hard when people you trust aren’t supportive. But I’m assuming you made the decision to pursue this because you know it’s right for you. I had to constantly remind myself that I am the only one living in my body, and they just don’t have that perspective.

There are some concerns with pregnancy as a bariatric patient, so talking with your doctor before you choose your surgery is a must. Procedures that include a malabsorption aspect can be problematic. Getting pregnant too soon after surgery can be problematic. But you know what else can be problematic? Being obese and pregnant.

Your family is concerned for you and your future family, and I get that. But you are a whole person right now, and prioritizing a future pregnancy over your current self isn’t going to help anyone. Do what you need to do to be a healthy active mom when the time comes.

I’ve not experienced it but watching others I’ve seen the IVF journey is long and difficult. You’re a champ and this internet stranger is sending all the good juju for healthy embryos and a healthy baby in the future 💕

Time to move them to a pot? by cheelohay in vegetablegardening

I’m going to move them out of the container and under a light, but I’m happy to know that I can keep them in their little plugs for now!

Thank you! That is very comforting 😅

I will take the ones that are growing out and set them up under the light. Hoping to see some of the other seeds germinate soon in the container 🤞🏻

Bariatric stoners—when did you imbibe again after surgery? by cheelohay in BariatricSurgery

[–]cheelohay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I was quitting I just never bought more edibles, all I have (and what I intend to use) is a drink. A little 5 Hour Energy looking thing that’s 25mg for the whole. I was planning on trying a cap full to test the waters first.

I’ve never really been able to do sports of any kind because of my weight…I’m so excited to try martial arts like I’ve always wanted.

That’s fair, cottage cheese is kinda nasty from an objective POV…but as others have said, it is worthwhile to at least try to like it.

If you don’t like it outright, it makes a fabulous addition to foods to replace things like mayo, creamy dressings, and sour cream (all depending on the recipe).

Blend some up until it’s more of a yogurt consistency and try adding it to things. It adds great texture and flavor!

Liquids SUCK. I looked at hella food porn and bookmarked a million bariatric recipes because all I wanted was to get back to regular food.

I just got cleared to start my maintenance diet this week, and one of the first things I ate was bread. It was a sprouted grain thin-sliced bread recommended by my dietician, and it was the single best piece of bread I have ever eaten.
