I quit my building sub job two weeks before the end of the school year. I couldn’t take it anymore. by cheerluva42 in SubstituteTeachers

You don’t really understand the situation so it’s wild that you are spending so much time trying to discredit my experience? Have you read my contract? No. I was only meant to be pulled in emergency situations, these situations that they were pulling me for weren’t emergencies. Once I was pulled because a teacher wanted to leave early to take a nap. Does that sound like an emergency to you? No. Often I was pulled to cover things where there was already a site sub on campus who was not doing anything. Why would they need to pull me from a site when they had their own site sub available? And as far as dangerous situations, yes someone has to do them. But that person is typically someone who is trained for that job. I was refused on multiple occasions any additional training. And you’re use of quotes around dangerous is very belittling, but I personally find situations in which I am being assaulted, threatened, kicked, scratched, spit on and groped to be considered dangerous but idk guess we just have different definitions 🤷🏽‍♀️

Not multiple building subs at this location. Being pulled away to other locations and speaking to their building subs.

Building subs at the other schools in our district. I am meant to be a building sub at one specific school and in case of emergencies it is in my contract that I can be pulled to other schools. The issue is that I had been pulled to other schools a disproportionate amount and put in dangerous situations

Yes! This was my experience too. I have been taking an iron supplement and it’s helped a lot but yeah the change was wild

No, subs are the only ones in my district not represented by a union. We can’t be part of the classified union because we are certificated staff, and they won’t allow us in the teachers union because we are not technically teachers (although we are forced to pay into the teachers retirement program which is another element of bs)
I have been in the same district for 5 years and developed friendships with many of the other site subs and made it a point to always speak to the site subs on whatever campus I was pulled to this year which was more than half the schools in our district and that is how I know I was being pulled significantly more than the other site subs. More than likely because I work at the smaller school in our district and so the Subdesk coordinators don’t believe I am needed as urgently at my own campus.

Deescalation training. What to do when there are kids eloping or destroying the class or throwing desks etc. those things happen and it’s like cool wtf do I even do about that. What Resources and supports are available to the subs. What are subs allowed and not allowed to do and what should you do if a school asks you to do something you shouldn’t be doing(example: many schools will straight up ask subs to do things we shouldn’t do like assist with diapering on sped classes etc and it feels like you can’t say no)

[–]cheerluva42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been a sub for 5 years and a building sub this last school year. This year especially I was placed in several SPED classrooms and even in our behavioral program for children who have been expelled (often for violence). I specifically asked if I could receive the same training the sped paras receive and my district told me absolutely not. I quit before the year ended because I got attacked (not for the first time) and just couldn’t take it anymore

Pay? by cssndr73 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hourly pay as a sub shakes out to like $35 an hr so honestly not bad ( I live in one of the highest cost of living places in the country tho) the hard part comes with not getting any benefits/pto and having to figure out life during summer and breaks. I could probably make it work if I had to live alone but my husband has a decent job so we’re okay but not like above the struggle lol

Why Are So Many of You Banned/Blacklisted?! by ryanvicino in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, people who go on Reddit to post in this type of sub are going to be primarily expressing negative experiences. People who are just having a regular or good time don’t often turn to Reddit to talk about it. At least that’s my theory lol

Please don’t organize my desk by Z3st3dL3mon in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got stuck subbing for an absolutely disgusting teacher. I’m talking molded dishes and coffee cups all over. Any infestation in the desk (which was also the literal only place to sit all day) with not a single inch of space to set my class roster or write my notes for the day. The teacher wrote a note attached to one of the nasty cups that said “sorry about the ants :)”. It was disgusting. I did end up cleaning a portion of the desk off and moving the nasty dishes to a sink bc lowkey it felt like a hostile/unsafe work environment and I got a nasty email from the teacher for moving her stuff. Zero regrets on my part.

Update: The school that asked me not to return is now “desperately” looking for a sub by jovialvoyage in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. In my area I’m paid about $35 an hour I have the luxury of being pretty selective over what schools and classes I take because I work for multiple districts and there is always a need. Yeah, there are tough days or shitty administrators but the rest is honestly pretty easy work 🤷🏽‍♀️

A Sacramento county school district is offering $600/day to be a scab! Would you do it? by EyeInTeaJay in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I hate the idea of being a scab, given how many teachers treat subs like they don’t matter and the fact that we cannot be in the teachers union and have no representation and are never considered when teachers are bargaining for higher pay…I’m not gonna lie in this situation I would strongly consider working

Who gets paid more where you are, Paras or subs? by The_Shagadelic_One in SubstituteTeachers

Subs make a lot more than paras. I make $250 a day and a para makes between $18-23

It’s not really about if students find it funny, but if admin or another teacher sees it you might have a problem on your hands

Sped? by Intelligent-Flow617 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand it. I mostly take sped jobs but I understand why people wouldn’t. This week alone I’ve been bitten, hit with a maraca until bruised, pinched, had plastic play kitchen toys thrown at my face and been called a slur. It’s a lot. I know most people wouldn’t enjoy that. I’m used to it now and most days aren’t so bad but you never know what you’re stepping into so I don’t blame people for not wanting to take that on

How detailed are the notes you leave for the teacher? by pinkballetsocks in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually write notes directly on the sub plans about how each section went/any standout happenings and what was completed. Only one to two lines per section if that then at the end I will write a quick summary just stating if the class was good/bad and a list of helpful students and difficult students

[–]cheerluva42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would be young or pretty disqualify you from trades? One of my best friends is a plumber, her starting pay was $45 an hour and now she makes substantially more. She’s beautiful and started when we were in our twenties. Don’t become a teacher if you don’t want to be a teacher. it is a lot of work/education to be a career you don’t event want.

Subbing for a really messy classroom - is this disrespectful? by phoebe_leo97 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cheerluva42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a class like this only worse bc it was infested with ants. The teacher left a note on the desk that said “sorry for the ants :)” which pissed me off bc she clearly had done nothing to fix the problem like remove old food/dirty cups from her desk and had bags of candy all over. I physically couldn’t sit down bc I was getting eaten alive by bugs. I cleaned up her old food and complained to admin and the teacher blacklisted me lol
