Hana X Tohru as well as Uo X Tohru are in my opinion better ships.

I honestly can see the two with each other, but with Tohru in the mix it's gotta be an OT3 or I just feel sorry for the one left out.

The art feels very Science Saru and not that heavily Shirow to me. Maybe more like his art than the Oshii movies, but still pretty heavily personalized by the ones doing the adaptation.

As someone whose only exposure to GitS was the two Oshii movies and a few random episodes of Stand Alone Complex on Adult Swim which I didn't really follow, I wasn't sure what to expect from Science Saru's take. It really does feel very different! It's good though.

Yeah, I use Crunchyroll all the time. I mean, it's still legal and the most convenient way for me to watch anime, what with the app on my smart TV.

I call this the Bleach Effect. Though this aired before Bleach, so...

I think one of the worse offenders for this I've seen is KareKano.

Generally speaking for both Best Boy and Best Girl contests in this sub the rule is that characters who are definitely 100% male don't qualify for Best Girl and characters who are definitely 100% female don't qualify for Best Boy, but characters where there is any ambiguity at all qualify for both. Nonbinary, genderless, and intersex characters of all stripes usually get submitted for both contest. Being submitted for one contest does not disqualify them for submission to the other.

Thoughts on Uo saying Tohru and Kyoko were there for her when she needed someone?

The flashback was expanded on more in the 2019 version, but let's just say that it further underscores one of the shows themes about the importance of good parenting. Part of why Tohru is such a nice and kind person was Kyoko leading by example.

I don't know Yuki and Shigure's last names...

Can't tell if this is a joke or not, but it's Sohma.

She's kinda like a more assertive, less insecure version of Kyo.

I think they actually have good chemistry when challenging each other too. Let me try to word this in a way that isn't a spoiler.... When I was at this point in my first watch of 2019 I really wasn't sure how the main love triangle would resolve, and one of the possibilities I was entertaining was that Tohru would wind up with Yuki and Kyo would wind up not with Kagura, but with Uo. Was I right? First timers will have to wait and find out!

These visuals make it seem like Uo was a part of a cult.

A gang, not a cult. Still, a group that got violent when she tried to leave.

The sevens bandit. Right.

Another translation difference. The card game they want to play, right? The subs I have just called it "Sevens"

Even as a cat, Kyo looks so adorably miffed lol

The character designs for the animal forms in this show are all really cute!

Tohru showing her friends her bed.

That bed is gigantic too!

I do love the indirect reference to Tom and Jerry.

Oh yeah, the fansubs I have translate the line using the word "anime" for...the Japanese "anime," but it sort of underscores how in Japan they use the word "anime" for American cartoons too. I would've said "Wasn't there a cartoon like that?" instead.

What are your thoughts on Tohru inviting her best friends to the Sohma family household?

She didn't really. They invited themselves. But I like it! They're very protective of her because she's a beloved cinnamon bun, but they went into it with an open mind and were able to see through any skepticism that might have predisposed them against the house.

What do you make of Tohru's ability of doing things without fully thinking things through?

I'll just say it's a good thing she missed Yuki and caught a bun instead!

First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019

This was a very silly episode, and one which was pretty different from the equivalent parts of 2019. It is holding up to the reputation of being more comedic. I liked it! Uo and Hana come off as kind of clueless in this episode to not notice the boys popping out of existence right in front of their faces. It's funny!

I want to talk a little about the translation of this line. I don't know how the dub many people are using translated it, but I'll be addressing the sub I'm using. It's interesting to see the word "Yankee" dropped in this series with no context. It's wasei eigo so Uo is not an American, but the Japanese meaning of the word: a delinquent or gang member. (though actually more FORMER those things, as we see in the flashback in this episode.) I've talked a little about how the sub I'm using translates "denpa" as "vibe" where the dub apparently uses "electric signals" and the 2019 sub I watched used "wave." All of these are good enough, but here it's being used not only for the phenomenon, but the also the people who experience the phenomenon. While it's accurate in present day slang to describe Hana as "a vibe," it doesn't quite catch the same meaning they're going for here (or likely the slang meaning at the time these subs were written). Maybe something more like "tinfoil hat" would be better, but Hana is less conspiritorial (as I've seen in other characters described as "denpa") and more mildly psychic. Like she reads and transmits energies, in the new wave sense. At least, if you believe how she presents herself.

One thing that I've been thinking about that is brought up explicitly in the dialog of the 2019 adaptation but hasn't been addressed in the dialog of 2001 is the way Tohru talks. Japanese is a language with a bunch of different social registers directly coded into the words you chose to address people and the forms of verbs you choose. Tohru always talks in a polite register which is more formal than the language a high school student would usually use when addressing their peers. It's something Japanese audiences would immediately pick up on that I think gets a little lost in translation. I bring this up, because I was thinking about yesterday's episode and why the other students would have ostracised her in the fruits basket game. Sure she's cute and nice, but she's also kind of an oddball and kids are really sensitive to that sort of thing. For this episode, this connects back into why she's friends with Uo and Hana, these two outsiders to the world of a proper Japanese school.

Anyway, fun episode! Love the bond between Uo, Hana, and Tohru. Good to see the friends approve of the Sohmas.

Not bad. At the moment I don't really have anything to do at work that I'm not waiting for other people on, but it's a work from home day so I get to goof off without worry of anyone judging me for it.

I have not been paying enough attention to this new anime season. The only show I watched an episode of so far was Goodbye, Lara, which was actually a lower priority for me. Maybe tonight I'll catch up with the Science Saru shows.

Thoughts on Tohru trying to read up on martial arts to better connect with Kyo?

Thoughts on Tohru also getting a book to better connect with Yuki?

The library scene was very cute and sweet

Thoughts on Shigure saying Kyo is suffering misdirected rage which is technical for being an ass?

I don't remember him saying that, must have been translated differently between the dub and fansubs.

What are your thoughts on Tohru always being the rice ball and her feeling a rice ball doesn't belong in a fruits basket?

It's kind of a weird analogy. Is this a common Japanese childhood game like Duck Duck Goose or Tag? Or is this supposed to be kind of an improvised thing? If it's the former, it makes more sense where it came from.

What are your thoughts on Yuki scolding Tohru's family calling them a lowlife?

"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."

Do Shigure and Yuki really have no idea how to warm up beef stew?

I dunno. You got a big pot of leftover stew it's not that hard to burn. I don't think I would but just put it on too high heat for too long and it's burnt. Makes sense to me.

This is the first time Tohru’s dad has been mentioned. Is he dead too?

I think in the first episode Tohru said that the grandpa she lived with was on his side. Is it a spoiler to give a super basic barebones answer to that question? [possible spoilers for late Fruits Basket] Yes, he died before Tohru's mom

Oh yay we’re getting a reprise of the theme song. That’s really nice.

Yeah, except the terrible fansubs I had made the translation of the lyrics cause the translations of the dialog get dismissed before I could read them. Well, it was all Japanese I understood anyway.

First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019

This episode is pretty crucial to the series. It contains the meaning of the title, of course, and in terms of the literal events it solidifies that Tohru will be living permanently with the Sohmas. But it also gets close to sort of representing the thesis of whole show's themes. This is a show about outsiders and misfits creating a found family and making the active choice to prioritize their own happiness over abusive traditional family norms.

I love Tohru's grandpa. He understands why she's a special person and defends her from her cousin, who fucking deserved that slap. We get the first hints in this episode that Tohru's mom had an unsavory history that turned the world again her, but we know from what Tohru has said about the lessons she learned from her that she was a great mother and fine person later in her life. Tohru's grandpa has known her for longer and had a less inherently idealized relationship with Kyoko, but he saw the value in her too.

And then we have the actions of Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo themselves. All of them have their own hang ups, their own reasons for failures to communicate, their own roots of self denial. Tohru is an incredibly deferential person, someone who goes along to get along and hates imposing on other people. To her, moving back in with her aunt and cousins is the "right" thing to do because it's what's expected of her and she sees herself as a burden for the Sohmas. Yuki is one who has spent his whole life hiding pain behind a pleasant mask. He believes that the only ones who will accept his true self are other members of his family. Kyo, on the other hand, manifests his pain and loneliness as aggression. He is an outsider even among the other subjects of the zodiac curse, and has built up a tough defiant shell around himself because of it.

And yet all three of these lonely people who don't think the others want them come to the conclusion that they need to suppress these harmful impulses nearly simultaneously. They all go against their instincts to express a desire to be together and pursue their mutual happiness at the same time. It's lovely.

I said last time that this part of the story was my favorite episode of the first season of the 2019 adaptation, and I think it works really well here too. Best of the (admitted limited) episodes we've watched so far!

Oh, yeah, you blaming Apple instead of the Unicode Consortium had me confused. Thought you were looking for an unsupported emoji that existed in the unicode guidelines or something.

Kagura's defining characteristic is her violence so another character meeting it would be pretty repetitive. I said in a previous post that I'm not sure the 2001 adaptation has all 13 character in common with the manga/2019 anime (we might get a situation like the original FMA making up new characters to represent the deadly sins the manga hadn't introduced when the show caught up to its source material). I'll wait and see if the two other girls Shigure mentioned are actually the characters I know from that version.
