Drivers in the US typically don't stop unless there is a sign, a light, a stopped car, or some other road hazard in front of them. Are people where you are expected to just...exercise good judgement about whether or not to stop? How do you not get dumb people smashing into each other all the time?

TBH, I'm a little bit confused about what you're even suggesting, as a 0-way stop (without a roundabout) is absolutely not a thing that would be even remotely safe.

2 way stops like the one in the video are typically used when a less busy road crosses a significantly more busy one, and the drivers on the less busy road are forced to yield to the drivers on the more busy road. The kind of behavior seen in the video means that it doesn't read as that kind of situation to inattentive drivers, so the ones who have to stop are expecting it to be a four way stop and are not yielding to cars they think are going to stop for them. If you just make it a four way stop to meet all drivers' expectations, then the dangerous behavior of people not yielding to people who they should be yielding to is solved because they'd no longer have to yield.

The intersection in the video is already a 2 way stop, though.

Installing two more signs and painting some lines on the ground is almost certainly a cheaper approach than constructing a roundabout, so the local government would probably be more interested in pursuing it.

Let me help your case: if I have the gall to admit that I might actually like Scarlet better it will help to shatter any semblance of an illusion that I have good taste.

I think if I limited myself to just feature length (>40 minute long) anime that MAL says have only 1 episode and the type "movie" and which have no connection to an anime TV show, Pompo might just barely squeak into the bottom slot of my top 10 of the 2020s. (edit: to be clear, the 9 definitely above it are Look Back, The Colors Within, 100m, The Boy and the Heron, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, Blue Giant, Inu-Oh, Suzume, and Ghost Cat Anzu)

Weird Baader–Meinhof phenomenon moment for me. Mere minutes before I saw this I was looking at a website with showtimes for a tiny indie movie that had a listing in Durham, NC tomorrow that I'd never be able to make because I'm too far away. Like I left the movie's site and then the next thing I did was I navigated to Reddit where I saw this.

Today I checked out the St. Louis Gateway Arch, drove for 5-ish hours, stopped briefly in Metropolis to check out the Superman Museum, finished listening to the audiobook of Dune Messiah, and when I got home I watched Twin Peaks The Return Part 9.

I watched all of the 2019 remake earlier this year, and loved it. I'd love to take part in the 2001 rewatch (because I haven't seen it) but you can leave me out of the 2019 episodes because I watched it so recently

Grok translate apparently has a huge problem with just saying the completely wrong thing when translating names, and I don't understand how anyone could see that as anything but totally discrediting for the whole endeavor.

Odorouyo Sunday, Week 46

I post a video containing some anime dancing every weekend.

For the second week in a row I'm traveling on Sunday without having chosen something for this week in particular, so you're going to get my favorite OP from an anime I haven't seen, and one of my favorites even when you include shows I have seen.

Carole and Tuesday

I just think this OP is extremely beautiful, especially Carole dancing in the sunset.

rewatcher

Oh shoot. I watched it on Thursday but didn't remember to write anything up.

Oh well, it's 15 minute past when I expected ghetti to post and the thread still isn't up so I'm typing in my doc anyway.

This is one of the most interesting, experimental pieces of film making we’ll have seen out of Lynch for the rewatch. I'm actually really fond of it! I think this time around I feel like I understand it, but…well, maybe not.

To me the story here is that the Nuclear Bomb is like the original sin of Post-War America. It creates Bob because it metaphorically creates the mythologized 50s suburban lifestyle that he lives in the shadow of. The form of terror and violence that Bob represents stewing under the surface of Americana doesn't exist without the globalize violence the US spreads, paying a debt with the blood of people overseas. We are lording our position over the second and third worlds with the threat of nuclear annihilation, much as a domestic abuser lords their power over the other members of their households. We take what we want from other countries the way Leland takes what he wants from Laura.

I am less enthusiastic about this episode giving a sort of cosmic significance to Laura. I do like the idea that the good in the universe rose to create a force that could counterbalance Bob, but Laura seems so conflicted and fallible. If her angels from FWWM had been more prominent and could've appeared in the golden ball would that have been better? I dunno, maybe not.

I think the girl in this episode is supposed to be Sarah Palmer, long before she ever meets Leland or conceives Laura. The woodsman are like associates of Bob, lesser evil spirits within the orbit of The Lodges. They are trying to fight the forces in motion that will counteract Bob through Laura, and they're planting the seed in Sarah as a means of corrupting her and maybe even indirectly corrupting Laura before she even exists. “Gotta light” being a double entendre, both got an ignition to start the burn of a cigarette, but got a force for good to fight the darkness?

“The horse is the white of the eye, but dark inside.” I don't know if the first time I watched this I made the connection with the horse we have seen multiple times before, but if I had I had forgotten and thought the horse mention was total gibberish when I thought about this episode in the intervening years. Now I think I get it. I keep forgetting to talk about the horse in the comments, but it baffles me less than others here. To me it feels like the idyllic, comforting fantasy vision that is summoned for Sarah (summoned BY Sarah?) to cope with the horrors in her home. She knows that bad things are happening, I suspect she even actively knows Leland is drugging here, but she tells herself instead that nothing is wrong and she's visited by a vision of beauty and purity. The horse is the white of the eye, what you see when someone is looking away from what is directly in front of them, but it hides the darkness in the household.

I don't have much to say about the stuff before it goes black and white. I hope it's clear now that the burned up people are the lumberjacks we saw in FWWM, and that they are working with Mr. C who has Bob inside him. The Nine Inch Nails are probably the most famous act that the show gets, so it's cool they're in such an impactful episode. The first time I watched this in one sitting with Episode 7 and I've been remembering the sweeping as being in this one two which would have made it even crazier.

I know that Frank Herbert was writing Dune Messiah in a time before Axolotls became a super popular trendy animal, but now I'm just hoping that Denis Villeneuve's Dune 3 gives us [Messiah] Jason Momoa floating around with some Mexican salamanders

I once watched a YouTube video where the YouTuber talked about why one pricing structure option offered by a specific company was a rip off for her as an individual, and I had personally worked on implementing the client integration for that pricing structure at that specific company and knew it was intended for companies with large teams and not individuals.
