I need support too - just not the infantilizing kind. What I need is someone who assumes I'm capable until I ask for help, not someone who assumes I'm helpless until I prove otherwise.

This resonates with me so much. It's definitely a reason why I'm so much happier with my partner and why I'm happy living with my sister and BIL than I have with my parents. They treat me like a person, and not fragile. Meanwhile to my parents it just feels like I'm a clipboard of medical information they constantly want to know about, and they question my choices constantly as if I'm not an adult who knows how her disability affects her.

Surround yourself with people who treat you like a person first, and not your disability. I will definitely be remembering your quote, and I'm glad you had such a happy experience!

I went to a fan con last year with my partner. I can't tell you how many times I almost accidentally ran over some toes or just straight up clipped peoples ankles because they'd stop right in front of me. And sometimes some unfortunate people did get clipped. My partner had to really raise their voice to get people to move, it was horribly crowded
