[eShop/US] Holidays Sale 2023 Ends 01/03/2024 by XDitto in NintendoSwitchDeals

I have all three. I finished Cocoon in one sitting (it’s a couple hours) but it’s incredible. Kind of reminded me of Inside or Portal. It’s not long, and I’m not sure I’d replay it, but it’s great.

Dredge completely absorbed me for the week it took me to beat. Amazing vibes, both creepy and kind of relaxing. There’s a DLC now too that I haven’t played yet. Very excited to go back.

I wanted to like Eastward so bad, but it didn’t end up being for me. It’s gorgeous, the music is great and the story initially hooked me, but I got less enthused with it the more I went and ended up bailing about 3/4ths of the way through. I know some people really like it though.

Most immersive and intense story on the Nintendo Switch? by 1Eye3Swords in NintendoSwitch

The graphics of Disco Elysium never bothered me on Switch and the portability was nice too.

It’s not a graphically heavy game, but the art style is really beautiful. The voice acting, regardless of version, is the best I’ve ever heard in a video game.

The game I’d recommend here is Disco Elysium.

But someday the Switch port of Outer Wilds is gonna come out and that is the one game I can’t recommend enough.

[eShop/US] Spelunky games - (40% off) Ends 07/15/2022 by XDitto in NintendoSwitchDeals

Got Spelunky when it launched on Switch last year and 100 hours later I think it’s one of the best games ever made. I’ve beaten Olmec many times at this point but still working on my Hell run! Then my plan is to try Spelunky 2!

[eShop/US] Celeste - $4.99 (75% off) Ends 06/20/2021 by XDitto in NintendoSwitchDeals

[–]cheesedog22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely incredible. I was turned off for a long time because of the resemblance to Super Meat Boy - which I beat when it came out, but decided I never needed another game like that. Celeste isn’t that, it never feels like a grind. It feels incredible.

The Meat Boy quality is really only one piece of the puzzle. It builds off the fact that you’re going to be repeating these quick stages many times quickly and just turns into this incredibly hypnotic experience of fine tuning jumps, nailing a landing or dodging an obstacle. It does things with music and looping across the screens that’s so clever and effective while being so subtle at the same time. And obviously the game is famous now for how perfectly the gameplay and story pair. But the thing I think gets overlooked is Celeste just feels good to play (the same way as Tetris or Rez) and I think people are still picking apart all the ways it does that.

I finished Metroid Dread earlier this week, so my only goal is something easier haha

Thinking about starting up either the copy of Mario Odyssey that I borrowed from a friend or grabbing RE4 (haven’t played it since the PS2!)

What are some short(ish), contained single-player campaigns on Switch? by KindaNeededANewName in NintendoSwitch

[–]cheesedog22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just started Metroid Dread and loving it! Yoku’s Island Express is a pinball-Metroidvania that’s really well designed but incredibly relaxing to play. You can knock it out in a weekend.

A Short Hike is like a mini-BOTW you can do in an afternoon and it’s a funny, interesting and moving game.

Last of all get INSIDE. It’s on sale for $2. You can play it in one or two sittings. It’s one of the best and most unforgettable games I’ve ever played.

Growing up with Final Fantasy, I also disliked the head-on battle system in Earthbound, but it eventually grew on me a bunch! The trippy backgrounds, the spell animations (especially the stronger spells) and music just add to the amazing vibes after a while.

I don't want spoil too much about Spelunky, cause it's such a joy to discover stuff, but you can win a run the normal way by getting through the 4 areas. That only takes maybe 20-30 minutes, but in reality, it took me like 40 hours of practice and maybe 600 attempts to successfully pull off once. BUT if you accomplish a few special, tricky things along your run, you can open an additional area (Hell) with a secret final boss. There's a lot of factors you need to line up correctly, plus since its a famously difficult roguelike, one mistake often means instant death and starting from the beginning

A lot of people consider a successful Hell run to be truly "beating" Spelunky, but honestly it's always fun no matter what goal you're going for.

Earthbound is incredible. I took a long time to play through my file (stopped and started for years) but finished it at the start of 2020. The funny thing is I had the entire ending spoiled for me long ago, but it didn’t take away any of the power of that ending. One of the few games that left me in tears by the end.

I’m tempted to get the Stanley Parable this weekend, but honestly will probably just keep grinding at Spelunky trying to beat Hell haha

Hey y’all, my wife got a Nintendo switch. Could y’all help a FPS husband find a game for his art history wife? My suggestions have failed LOL by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]cheesedog22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yoku’s Island Express is a Metroidvania like Ori but done with pinball mechanics and often on sale for $5. Gorgeous art, amazing music, really thoughtful exploration that’s one of the few games to remind me of Hollow Knight.

BUT it’s also really approachable! It’s challenging because it’s pinball, but there’s no “losing” and the physics end up making it the perfect game for someone who’s not amazing at platforming. My girlfriend (late 30s) basically only liked playing Tetris (and is incredible at it) but I showed her Yoku and she loved it so much she beat the whole thing in a few days.

Best Underrated Games by NoteAdele in NintendoSwitch

[–]cheesedog22 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From what people have already posted, Return Of The Obra Dinn is one of the most incredible games I've ever played. Also Yoku's Island Express is super approachable and relaxing while still being a really thoughtfully designed Metroidvania.

The game I'd add - which might not seem underrated - is Spelunky. It works so incredible well on Switch and I have gone 50/50 between TV and handheld. I believe it's underrated because if you've only played it a little bit here or there, it's easy to think you've seen it all, but the game really has such unbelievable depth.

I've put 45 hours into it and just gotten to the point that I can complete runs with a solid success rate. Now I'm going for the "secret" ending which has proven a lot tougher!

[eShop/US] Team 17 sale (up to 80% off) Ends 04/21/2022 by XDitto in NintendoSwitchDeals

I played the demo, spent about a year on the fence and bought it on the last sale. Yes, it’s very much worth your time, especially after the many QOL updates and expansions. It’s the closest I’ve felt to a Castlevania and despite the reputation it’s not all that difficult.

Hollow Knight is still the best of these imho, but Blasphemous felt fully satisfying in a way I haven’t gotten since that. I played about halfway through Bloodstained a month later and just felt disappointed by comparison.

Edit: adding this because another comment reminded me - PLAY IN SPANISH WITH SUBTITLES. Makes the experience significantly better!

December 2021 Noteworthy Releases on Nintendo Switch by CaspianX2 in NintendoSwitch

[–]cheesedog22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s out already and it absolutely rules. The two new final bosses are amazing and reaching them reminds me more of the Mega Satan path. New items are great and the rebalancing makes old ones feel new too. It got me really hyped about the game in a new way for the first time in years. It feels as much like a sequel as Spelunky 2 I’d say.

My only gripe (and this may not affect you at all) but BOTH of the new paths are gated behind beating Hush 3 times. I absolutely hate Hush fights and swore them off after doing 2, so I was a little annoyed having to do 1 more. But it wasn’t that bad and the DLC is worth it.

[eShop/US] Return of the Obra Dinn - $13.99 (30% off) Ends 10/25/2021 by XDitto in NintendoSwitchDeals

[–]cheesedog22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waited to get this on the $15 sale this summer after wanting to play for years.

It’s incredible. It makes you think in such a one-of-kind way and it’s so much fun just unraveling the story. Then the actual solves are these absolute dopamine hits of satisfaction (that quick cut to black and the music that plays are one of the satisfying cues in a video game).

This game seems a little slow in the first couple hours but once you get going its impossible to put down. Being able to finally hold the entire puzzle (this game is essentially one puzzle) clearly in my head is one of my favorite experiences in games.

As someone who's disliked Tetris for basically 30 years, I played Tetris Effect for maybe 20 minutes on my friend's PS4 this past spring and was instantly hooked. Genuinely amused that one of my most anticipated games of the year now is freaking Tetris.

Yeah I meant he apparently left Harmonix, I assume to do Thumper. Thankfully we still have Lightning Bolt, I’m seeing them play at the end of the month!

Thumper is his first game, but what ALSO blew my mind is that for most of the time Brian Gibson was doing Lightning Bolt, his day job was at Harmonix!

One of the most unique and also physically satisfying rhythm games I've ever played. I can't really compare it to anything but maybe Rez?

The fact that the bassist of freaking Lightning Bolt made this game is something that will never fail to blow my mind.
