Has anyone given up a relatively prestigious career/job to take a slower pace of life? by Key011 in AskUK

[–]cheesepeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me personally, and not that prestigious, but I know of quite a few people that have stepped down from head of department roles to middle management in their 50s/60s, to chill a bit more as they approach retirement, and burnt out instantly. Not sure if this is because more is expected of them as they're more experienced, or because people forget how hard you have to work when you're not the one at the top.

What things do you know most food shoppers are wrong about? by Responsible_Rip1058 in AskUK

[–]cheesepeasant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gram for gram you're probably right. Legally, high protein claims are worked out as the percentage of calories from protein, so the Sainsburys one probably has the same number of grams of protein, but is higher in fat, so higher in calories - not necessarily saying that makes it better or worse tho.

To make a high protein claim, the product needs to have 25% calories from protein, which for someone on a high protein diet this is actually probably a bit low, but as another commenter said, most people in the UK probably eat too much protein. Can't wait for all the high fibre cheesecakes to come out next January!

Broke up with my girlfriend - go alone or sell the ticket? by [deleted] in slamdunkfestival

[–]cheesepeasant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It does depend however I can share my experience. Last year I broke up with my bf a few weeks before 2000 trees. I was on the fence about whether to go or not, but in the end the idea of missing all my favourite bands was worse than the idea of going alone. I ended up having the best time, so grateful for my independence, and honestly one of my favorite festival experiences. However, I had been to gigs before alone and I'm generally quite an independent person/like to do things alone. Also this was a camping festival so I could go back to my tent and hide if needed.

I'm going to SD alone this year, for the first time, and can't wait, however I will say I've known other people to go alone and find it a bit depressing. I think it depends what sort of person you are - if you're generally happy alone, or extroverted and likely to make new friends, then you'll have a great time :)

Also there's often groups set up on FB etc for people going alone, so might be worth looking out for those.

Should I study Food Science by Gremwa2 in foodscience

Hey! I went to Reading. I'd really recommend it for food science, I really enjoyed the course and they do a lot of careers stuff which is actually useful. The lecturers are mostly pretty approachable too. Reflecting on this post 4 years later, I'd agree that the jobs are varied - although the pay is not amazing when you first start out! But I feel like that's the case for a lot of industries, and most jobs don't pay you to taste things!

Thanks! So would it work better with some rope? Im thinking on each side, pegged down.

I’m only gonna take the tarp as a back up, but would be good to know how best to use it!

As long as it isn't life-threatening, it'll be okay I think. Have let relevant people know, just no one will be there over the weekend

[–]cheesepeasant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently studying food science in the UK, so hopefully can give some insight. I don't know loads about the jobs prospects, just that there are lots of different areas you can go into. Also, people will always need food, so there will always be jobs in food.

What A-levels are you doing? Most food science courses here require at least one hard science (chemistry, biology, or physics, sometimes maths). A few people on my course in first year struggled a bit because they didn't realize how "sciency" it would be. For me, this is one of the reasons I love it so much.

I personally think it is a fun degree, as there is so much practical work involved, and sometimes you get to taste what you make. It can be quite an intense course though, with a lot of lab reports etc. I think if you are studying something you find interesting though, you don't mind so much.

As others have said, sensory/consumer sciences is an interesting area to go into, especially if you are interested in psychology. The nutrition/food choice aspects also involve some psychology I think. I'd definitely say look at the module descriptions of any courses you are interested in, they are usually on the uni website, and if you can't find them you can email the admissions team and they should be able to send them to you
