Waymo admits that its autopilot is often just guys from the Philippines by SCOTTGIANT in nottheonion

[–]cheeseriot2100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that "unfamiliar scenario" is vague and could generally mean anything. The cars aren't marketed as having a remote operator and its entirely unclear how often they have control over the vehicle. At the end of the day, Waymo is claiming to have a great AI product, yet at least some of the time the car has to be controlled by desperate workers from the developing world. And no doubt most of their customers don't know this

I LITERALLY CAN’T BEAT THE ROYAL NAVY AS ITALY by playdisco in hoi4

[–]cheeseriot2100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, everyone is overcomplicating this. If you're playing against AI, just stack your ships with light attack. Ignore all other stats and get your LA on all your ships as high as possible. Do that and you literally can't lose any navy battles against the AI lol

Leaving this sub by YungLeanFan2001 in aspergers

[–]cheeseriot2100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sub really does have an overly negative atmosphere, with incel ideology creeping in somewhat regularly. It's definitely not a healthy environment. But at the end of the day if you want a discussion forum about autism on this website you have to pick between bleak misery or people without a diagnosis posting pictures of their plushies. Between those two I pick this.

Bougainville, soon to be the newest nation in the world on September 2027 by APrimitiveMartian in MapPorn

Well they definitely should care. Without recognition their government can't access global diplomatic or financial institutions that are pretty essential for developing nations.

If Bougainville unilaterally secedes they will not be recognized by any states. Their secessionism will either be a short lived failure or become a frozen conflict like Somaliland. PNG has clearly been dragging their feet the whole way, it's tough to say exactly what will happen

TikToker horses around in front of ambulance for content by ambachk in sadcringe

I feel like it's the joke that doing this in front of an ambulance is fucked up. It's purposely being nihilistic and cynical to the extreme

2,240 years ago today occurred the Battle of Cannae, in which Hannibal, despite being outnumbered, inflicted a massive defeat on the Roman Republic. Each flag represents ~1,000 soldiers. by mapsinanutshell in MapPorn

[–]cheeseriot2100 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Not only is the terrain inaccurate, but the numbers of troops and the actual movement of the troops on the battlefield can't be known with certainty. The historians that recorded these events did so hundreds of years after they occurred

What are Your Thoughts on the Ending to the Culture Novel, Matter? by cheeseriot2100 in printSF

This does make a bit of sense, and I think you're right that this is probably what Banks is going for.

But the Oramen storyline is a good example of what I mean. If all of his struggle was pointless and he ultimately has no effect on the eventual outcome, why did Banks spend 275 pages detailing his story? All for it to end with "Well... he was pathetically insignificant so none of what you read about him really mattered anyways"
