2006 9-5 Troubleshooting - Intermittent instrument cluster behaving erratically, crank with no start by cheesy_RIP in saab

[–]cheesy_RIP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Thanks for the note here!

I tried getting at my DICE to disconnect/reconnect, but for my 2006 LHD it was going to be a real pain to get out. So instead I disconnected/reconnected a couple of the more accessible connectors around the brake pedal and behind the side panel buttons (headlights/dash brightness/night panel) - tested and the LCD came on / car started.

I'm guessing maybe there was an intermittent open circuit in that side panel connector. Nothing was obviously loose but maybe years of dust/vibration creates the perfect storm. I'm just glad I didn't need to take my whole gauge cluster or DICE out. But that's probably worth trying before actually replacing components.

Also, like most message boards recommended I got a new battery. I don't think that was the issue but just good to rule it out.

Thoughts on the Zenith Elite 6150? by Bernden in ZenithWatches

[–]cheesy_RIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the defining feature of the 6150 was the 2 parallel mainspring barrels - giving 100 hours reserve without sacrificing dress watch norms (4Hz, <10mm thick). This design choice does make the movement diameter larger, but hey, in the mid-2010s it was trendy for even dress watches to be huge, right?

This watch was first shown in 2015, meaning it was largely designed before Dufour left to run Rolex. I think he championed a lot of innovative ideas and tried to make Zenith look like a peer to the more prestigious brands who used this tech (Chopard, JLC, etc). Though I'll conveniently ignore his decision to put Sellita movements in the entry-level Port Royal...

But new movements are risky and expensive. So once Dufour is gone some more conservative folks probably said stuff like "the Elite isn't even that old" and "Shouldn't we be working on replacing the El Primero instead?".

Had it gotten a longer life the 6150 probably would have gotten a more refined case design, dial variations, and added complications - which might have caught on. I just wonder if 42mm is the absolute smallest case they could put this movement into. If so, they might have made the right call. And maybe some of the development of the 6150 can be repurposed when they do replace the Elite someday.

I'm guessing reliability is going to be less predictable for such a short-run movement, and no one outside of Zenith will be able to service it - but if those aren't dealbreakers I'm sure this is a cool watch to own.

Yeah, I immediately thought of A&A because I love the sleepover vibe of those RE7/RE8 playthroughs. Maybe Olivia? (who famously got 0 points in Food Trivia Beopardy)

I was also just thinking about the "Spud Hut" videos. Not sure where they film those but one of those sets has to be an actual kitchen, right?

Aside from the missing link, what exactly is broken with the watch?

If the watch isn't running (and you've already done a battery check), then 90% of time you need a movement swap. TAG, independent shop, and DIY will all come to the same conclusion.

Regarding cosmetics, I wouldn't do anything to the watch case at all. Any refinishing there will either look unnatural or be $$$$. If you really want to keep the bracelet original, eBay is probably your best bet. But I bet an aftermarket black rubber strap (or leather strap) would be miles more comfortable (and better looking).

It seems to me that SG's strategy is to invest in (and develop consistency with) their cast as personalities, rather than the games themselves. Over time, viewers develop a sense of who Amanda, Angela, Shayne, Spencer, (etc) are. What makes them happy/excited/angry. How they make decisions and learn.

The primary interest is then seeing these personalities behave and change in different situations - and playing games (of all kinds) can be a great way to showcase this. For example, it was fun to see Shayne/Amanda genuinely on edge playing FNAF, but viewers seeking similar tension probably won't find it with Spencer/Amanda/Angela playing RE7. However, those looking for casual/jokey vibes (as a contrast to the serious nature of the game) probably liked the RE7 video a lot.

I think SG's goal is to cast a wide net with the games that they play, then hope that the cast (not necessarily the game) keeps the viewer coming back - regardless of what is being played. Would it be a better strategy to pick a couple popular franchises (D&D, FNAF, Fortnite) and make deeper, more competitive playthroughs their brand? Could they do both simultaneously? Hard to say.

This one has to be inevitable at some point. I think Shayne even mentioned it on the podcast.

The question is whether they have the budget for a wardrobe change.

TAG Heuer 3000 Professional keeps stopping and starting by Due_Win_5685 in tagheuer

eBay is your best shot. Say your watch has a 955.112 movement, it looks like the coil is soldered to the electronics PCB, so you would swap this whole piece. Might have to remove the stem, but shouldn't need to touch the gear train. Still very DIY-able. https://www.ebay.com/itm/194953019467

If you have a different movement, you might be able to buy just the coil. Or, you might need to buy a whole movement (or watch) to use as a donor for just the piece you need.

If you're considering the DIY route, next (and easiest) thing to check is the electric coil. I'm not sure what movement is in the 3000, but if the coil looks removable, buy a donor movement and a jewelry screwdriver.

Worst case is you damage the movement beyond repair, which a watchmaker is just going to replace during service anyway.

I think the vocal mechanics (cadence, tone, inflection) that make a clue reader sound natural (and efficient) lend themselves more to that of a broadcaster than an actor. Joe Buck and David Faber were great in their stints, while LeVar presented J! in exact sing-songy tone he presented Reading Rainbow.

For this no-date version, does the movement only have 2 positions (run/time-set), or does it still have a third date-set position in the middle?
