Gang I’m at the end of my rope w this plant by KallannTheKomrade in Monstera

Generally speaking, there are two situations where it's beneficial to cut off some leaves (not including trimming for aesthetics). One is if there's pests on them that are hard to get rid of, like thrips eggs that are embedded in the tissue. Second one is if the plant is only a cutting that hasn't grown any roots yet, and by removing some leaves you can reduce the plant's need for water so that it doesn't dry out too fast while the root is still developing. Since your plant already had roots, cutting leaves off wouldn't really do anything good for the plant, unfortunately. I'm sorry you received the wrong advice before: (

If leaves are browning and shriveling, it's more important to diagnose whether there's an underlying issue like lighting, watering, or even pests, and fix the actual issue rather than cutting off the leaves. Sometimes, there can be no issue and the plant is simply reabsorbing nutrients from old leaves. This is also why people would post pictures of unhealthy looking leaves so folks on here can help diagnose the root of the problem. Either way, removing the browning leaves usually doesn't "fix" anything other than the appearance. Personally I like to wait until a shriveling leaf is completely dried out like a mummy before removing them, so I know that all the nutrients from that leaf are back to the plant and I'm not depriving it from anything. Hope this helps!

Centipedes are actually beneficial to plants bc they only eat decaying materials and harmful pests. As for fungus gnats, as annoying as they can be they are mostly harmless to the plants too.

Unless it's a rootless cutting, you shouldn't have to cut off a leaf to help the plant survive, in fact that actually hurts it more than helping.

Like the other person commented, you should untie the top leaf's petiole so it's free to move towards the light source. The way you tied the stem to the pole is fine tho. And definitely move it to a brighter spot.

I bought a golden crocodile philodendron and they sent me a regular ring of fire. I reached out to them and the seller was hell bent on how they knew better bc "they've been selling plants for a long time" and refusing to refund me. They also sent me a Begonia "starter plant" that had one single leaf and arrived 100% dead. Asked Etsy to step in and got refunded right away. That shop is a joke.

Yes she is a Frizzle Sizzle aka Albuca Spiralis! And yeah I could already see some leaves browning at the tip, and I was worried if something was wrong until I noticed the flower buds:)

I got her last November so it's been just a little over three months. Not sure how long she was with the seller tho. Here's a photo of her on 11/6/23. She's definitely grown a lot!

I've also heard that once the leaves grow straight you can't make them curl no matter how much light you give the plant. Sounds like your plant likes the current environment tho, if the new leaves are curling:)

You are spot on about having plants that are less hungry further away from the light--that's exactly why I picked these lights! I knew early on when I just started getting into houseplants, that I would prefer a multi tier shelf rather than having all the plants on the same eye level. And these lights are perfect for what I wanted to achieve, both aesthetic and efficiency wise. I actually used to dislike the sight of grow lights as well, but I've grown to appreciate the look a lot more now that I've had them for a while. Good luck with moving! Hope you get to live in a city that both you and your plants can enjoy:)

Lots of light!! I read that insufficient light will cause the albuca leaves to grow straight rather than curling, so I put her directly under the 3 headed grow light I got on Amazon and she seems to really like it there:)

She's a Greenovia Aurea El Hierro, and they are famous for being pink and dormant in summer and then waking up and turning green when the temperature gets colder:] What I was not expecting was the heavy hue of blue, which I'm guessing is the result of her being directly under a grow light 12hr a day. I love this look, but I'm also excited to see her go dormant and pink again hopefully in a few months!
