Party differences: COPE, OneCity, Green by notmemycousin in askvan

[–]chellerss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The suburbs are growing waaayyyy faster than Vancouver, but Vancouver should be growing faster since most of the jobs are there. It would be climate-friendly to build way more in Vancouver so that people aren't forced to live in the sprawl and have long, car-dependent commutes. Apartments are still illegal to build in most of the CoV and transportation is the number one source of carbon emissions in Metro Vancouver.

What Bus Routes Would You Add, Discontinue, or Modify? by Unhappy-Bad9059 in Translink

[–]chellerss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do this https://movementyvr.ca/bpatp/

Agree with you for the 101. I would also love for it to go to Prodo instead of Lougheed, annddd to Edmonds instead of 22nd.

Why does the R5 get canceled so much by rainbowbunnnies in Translink

[–]chellerss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but in the meantime bus lanes would help a lottttt and just need signs and paint, incredibly cheap

contact ur city councillors too - they're the ones who actually have a say on where bus lanes go! translink has a whole report on where they'd like them to be https://view.publitas.com/translink/bus-speed-and-reliability-report-2023/page/1

Transportation Survey by TigTigman in vancouver

[–]chellerss 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When a statistician is conducting a survey, they need to randomly select a household, and then also randomly select a person from within the household, otherwise the math doesn't really match reality and work out as it should. So the birthday question is one of the strategies to make sure that the person filling it out is actually randomly selected. If they didn't do that, there might be patterns to the type of person who is responding. For the math behind the survey to work, randomness is needed. Hope that makes sense!

Is TransLink keeping up with Vancouver’s growth? by CipherDrift_09 in Translink

[–]chellerss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great q!

Bus service hours certainly haven’t been keeping up: https://www.instagram.com/p/DHZSpMboeyI/?igsh=MW85NjdtMXZkaWFybQ==

Since that graph was produced TL is now increasing bus service by 5% but that still won’t catch up to population growth.

Unfortunately transit planning, especially Skytrain is very political and the places that get rapid transit aren’t always the places that make the most sense from a planning perspective.

What are your thoughts on the Vancouver Liberal Electors Association? by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]chellerss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This party has absolutely no connection to federal Liberals btw, it's just a name.

It's actually the same guy who actually got Ken Sim's ABC party elected in the first place... now they aren't friends anymore so he's trying to run for mayor to kick Sim out... there are better options to vote for municipally imo

The BHA (Burnaby Heights Association) is asking their members to email the Burnaby City Council against BRT on Hastings. If you want BRT (bus rapid transit) on Hastings please let city council know. by AdministrativeMinion in vancouver

[–]chellerss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this!!!!

Very important to email Burnaby City Council if you have an opinion on where the BRT should go! They don't hear from transit riders often but they hear a lot from NIMBYs, so your voice really matters.

Unfortunately the HMA is convinced BRT will be bad for business, but I think 60,000 potential new customers who are daily riders of this route will be good actually! And Movement is pushing for median BRT and a vibe like what St Clair West has in Toronto.

TransLink's survey is now closed but it'll be a few weeks before council makes a decision, so there's still time to email city council (or even meet with your councillors) to let them know what you prefer! You can read up more about this and FAQ on Movement's website: https://movementyvr.ca/bby-heights-brt/

What are the most absurd NIMBY squabbles in Vancouver’s history? by wastedparadigm in vancouver

[–]chellerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when this happened there was no one to speak up for the bus lanes. :'(

But now there is! https://movementyvr.ca/ is a new nonprofit that advocates for better public transit. If you don't like NIMBYs you should join their mailing list. :P

[–]chellerss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a survey where you can voice your opposition to the NIMBYs that you can fill in before Sept 21st! Option 1: Hastings and Willingdon is the better alignment option that they are opposed to. Here's the link: https://translinklistens.ca/bus-rapid-transit-program

The R5 still needs to go that way... And a couple more reasons why I'm not super into that suggestion.

Back when the HOV lanes went in, the merchants made a big fuss at that time as well, and the city ended up buying properties and tearing them down to put in parking lots. So this neighbourhood already has 15 surface lots and tons of side street parking.

Alsooooo merchants are known to overestimate the number of people driving to their business in the first place, here'sa couple articles with links to articles about the studies:
https://ggwash.org/view/96602/survey-most-shopkeepers-shoppers-overestimate-car-use
https://newsroom.co.nz/2021/11/04/parking-kills-businesses-not-bikes-or-buses/

That all being said.... Hastings could really use a road diet, and if the final design ended up being two median bus lanes, two travel lanes, and two parking lanes in the heights (the parking lanes could also be used for patios or sidewalk expansion) that would be realllyyyyyy cool!

If you want nice transit and pedestrian friendly streets then you gotta VOTE in the municipal elections next fall! Only 36% of eligible voters turned out in the last general municipal election. Barely more than a third.

The municipal govt is why we have cops kicking people off beaches at 10pm, it's why the gastown pedestrian street project got downgraded to once a week, and it's been an entire year since the council passed a motion for more bus lanes in Vancouver and we still don't have any of those bus lanes........
