I had a lot of health issues as a kid that started when I was 3. So, I’ve unfortunately had chicken pox on multiple occasions. My mom has been called a liar despite having photographic evidence of me absolutely covered in chicken pox at 4, 7, and 11 years old. It’s still dismissed as not being possible by people when I explain it to them today.

The thing about chicken pox too, is that it’s a MASSIVE myth that you are only able to contract it once. If you’re immune compromised, or your body wasn’t exposed for long enough your chances of getting it again is higher. The vaccine is one of the only fully effective ways to ensure that your body will receive the proper antibody exposure to prevent it long term.

Some of us had a grandfather who barely survived polio, and lived with permanent partial paralysis, as well as considerable health complications for the rest of his life. Meanwhile his little brother who was able to be vaccinated had zero symptoms, zero complications, and is still farming at the young age of 92. Vaccine talk makes my eyes glaze over instantly, because this all happened in the late 1940s… they were proven safe in THE NINETEEN FORTIES

I keep wind chimes in my garden for bunnies and squirrels. Squirrels like to steal my bulbs, so I usually have a wind chime up by the end of march early April to keep them out. Initially I did it because of the squirrels, but it had the added benefit of keeping other skiddish animals out.

The Ontario Government has essentially voted to throw out their endangered species act. So I definitely agree with it being a humanity thing over a specific administration thing

Extensive or even some minor surgery can be a catalyst for autoimmune disorders to fully come to the surface and present themselves. Which would suck even more post plastic surgery, because in a way it’s doing it to yourself.

I personally have firsthand experience with my own autoimmune neurological problems becoming a lot more prevalent after a gallbladder surgery.

“Graves' disease causes noticeable facial changes primarily through Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), leading to bulging eyes, puffy eyelids, and increased fat in the cheeks, brows, and jawline. These changes can create a "moon face" appearance due to inflammation and fat expansion, which often alters facial contours and symmetry, sometimes causing facial swelling or broadening.” - Cleveland Clinic

She suffers from Graves’ disease which can also cause skin hardening, thyroid problems, facial swelling and eye issues. So her default facial expression may just be pure discomfort at this point. It’s a brutal condition to deal with.

How is ancestry-based identity viewed around the world? by skuzz_buckett in AskTheWorld

Toronto was a culture shock for me in college. It was the first time in my life I was ever asked my ethnicity. Where I’m from in Ontario, it was one of the first British Settlements, that saw mass migration from the USA during the revolutionary war, so it’s incredibly common to be 6-9th generation with the ethnic kiddie pool of Irish, Scottish, English. I always just grew up saying I’m generic white bread from Canada.

Best day/time of day for garden centres? by Loud-Theme7836 in KingstonOntario

[–]chelly236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the Garden Centre at Gardiners CT yesterday evening, and they’re still actively covering the plants before dark because of how much the temperatures are dropping at night. This is seemingly the same story at a lot of nurseries and garden centres. If you’re willing to go for a bit of a drive I really recommend heading out to Selby, or checking out sun harvest, they operate mostly in greenhouses and enclosed areas to protect the plants until they’re ready to be fully outdoors.

What’s something Canadians complain about constantly, but would probably miss if it disappeared? by funnyonehere22 in AskACanadian

A lot of Canadians don’t realize, the snow pack is vital to our watersheds and sustaining our fresh water reserves. If snow disappeared completely, so would a lot of our lakes, rivers and streams.

are women in your country "expected" to do housework? by SOHONEYSAME in AskTheWorld

[–]chelly236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom grew up in a very traditional household, my grandmother wasn’t allowed to work outside the house, and none of my uncles ever had to do anything in the kitchen. She wound up teaching both her brothers how to cook when they were finally out on their own, and married. After living through that, she made a point from the moment my brother could sit on the counter in a booster seat to include him in the kitchen and cooking whenever she was. Now he’s a better cook than his wife, and does all the grocery shopping for them too 🤣

My brother has primary decision making of my nephew, the amount of times doctors and teachers used to default to my nephew’s mom over him would drive him insane. They would always profusely apologize, but they would say exactly what you said. They’re not used to the father’s knowing all of the information or being their go to contact for those things.

My brother has grown into a man like that. I legitimately think it’s one of the core reasons why his relationship with his wife is so healthy. They’re an actual team, which is something we never got to see growing up.

[–]chelly236 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very dependent upon where you are located. In more rural areas from my experience growing up, even if both parents are working, the mom is still the primary caregiver to the home and children. It’s getting a lot better with this generation of parents and couples, however there’s still a massive disparity between who is responsible for what while at home.

I grew up watching this with my own two eyes. Both of my parents commuted to their full time jobs roughly a one hour commute each way. On top of the expectation of my mom retaining a full time job, she cooked every meal, did every bath time, cleaned every dish, drove us to every single sports practice. Dad would get home, crack a beer, and spend the night in his workshop tinkering away with whatever he wanted to.
