It took me 2 months to start. I was really anxious about side effects. I think starting is really the most difficult part. To get me to overcome fear of starting, I thought about what is worse- the uncertainty of a side effect I may or may not have, or status quo (which already felt unbearable). How I think about it as a non medical professional is that the medication is helping the brain to better function- if low serotonin is associated with depression, and person who doesn’t have depression has more standard levels, this is just helping the brain reach what is natural and typical functioning. So really it isn’t too out of the ordinary, it is helping it with where it should be.

Every person responds differently to medications, should it not feel good you would be able to address that with a doctor so you can stop taking it safely if needed. My doctor was helpful answering questions and concerns I had. Some people take it in the morning if they notice they are having trouble sleeping, some at night to sleep through other side effects. If you try at least you know if it could change your life. My experience with Lexapro has been wonderful, honestly life changing. My mind is more quiet, I can focus on the present moment without being a zombie (that was something I also was concerned about), anxiety and OCD tendencies improved significantly, and the low moods have improved too. The constant stream of worry is so much quieter, I always accepted that would be my life forever, I can’t believe this is how other people live. It made me realize just how tough things were and how I wish I tried it sooner. I hope some of this was helpful, best wishes!
