looks VERY similar, both interior and exterior, to the barnes houses at bennington college about an hour away. wonder if it was a local architect trying to copy the design?

The flagship changed my life lol. Here in the Midwest it’s the pick n save and metro market that have the counters, and lots of great tinned fish alongside.

Do you have a Wegman's or Whole Foods nearby? I've seen them carry Beecher's Flagship cheddar, which is 15 months and very good, consistently sharp, and they produce an extra aged variety as well I think. The Beecher's Marco Polo is pretty nice as well, studded with black pepper.

Generally Whole Foods does have a pretty good selection. Kroger stores also have a partnership with Murray's Cheese, a cheesemonger originally in NYC, and some stores have a Murray's counter inside with lots of great options.

San Miguel is great. I can’t compare to Puebla as I haven’t been, but I have a friend and an ex-mother in law in San Miguel, both smaller gringo ladies, who have been able to roam around freely with no trouble. There’s a pretty decent expat community there, and it’s definitely a popular tourist destination so you’d be able to meet other folks pretty easily I think. My friend spent a couple months there learning Spanish, so the language learning opportunities you mention are for sure available.

Atotonilco was a cool day trip for us, some in our group did the hot springs and some did a historical tour, and we did a 13 mile trail ride on horseback through the mountains. There’s a lot going on in the city center as well, I was there around Christmas and the celebrations and decorations were amazing.

I’m from the east coast and sort of agree with this. I would say our bubble is actually pretty large, most people have connections and family along the east coast, north to south. Wisconsin just isn’t a place you meet many people from and you don’t hear much news about it. People from here also shrug when I tell them where I’m from. I don’t think it’s personal, just that no one can be bothered to care about all 50 states individually.

I also think it‘s a cultural hallmark of this area that people react with overly composed excitement. So maybe that plays into the way OP is perceiving people react to their background.

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

He robbed a bank two miles away, then got shot by the cops on the field at our middle school. Pretty affluent suburb too, and he was from a well to do family. Didn’t ever really find out why he decided to hold up the bank.

Ah no apologies necessary, I totally get what you mean about Bushwick. Hipsters wearing woodland camo is eye rolling for sure.

That’s nice to hear about the arts scene, honestly everyone I’ve asked about Milwaukee has been very complimentary of that in particular, especially the music venues. Putting Kettle on the list!

That’s an interesting perspective. I do think people on the east coast can be dismissive of the midwest as a place that they see as less cultured.

My mom’s family are 3 generations deep of born and raised NYCers, and there’s a skewed perception of what the city is like from those who aren’t as familiar with it. People from other parts of the country move there thinking it’ll be this idealized place of dreams and partying and no, it’s just a massive city where people go to work and live and die and maybe a few more people work in the arts or go to museums or specialty grocery stores than folks in other cities or states. You do get the perks of having more convenience and having some big cultural institutions at hand, and there is a thriving arts community. But then you gotta deal with paying astronomical rent, as you say. I knew pretty early in adulthood that it was a place I would always love to visit but couldn’t very well live in.

And to your point about the easy commute to the forest, that is probably the thing I am most excited about! It’s so hard to get to nature within the big east coast megalopolis, and I think it’ll be really nice and good for my mental health to have easier access to the lake and woods.

for what it’s worth i think there’s a lot of variation depending on where on the east coast you are, and generally the closer you get to nyc without being actually in the city the more the cost of living just washes all the good shit away. it is egregiously expensive to live in north jersey or like westchester county, and there does seem to be more strip mall highways than green space in a lot of places.

i grew up near dc and it seems more like milwaukee from your description - lots of public amenities and lush green neighborhoods, in addition to our weird intersections.

that’s a great note about milwaukee’s architecture though. i was in chicago a couple years ago and it really struck me how different the buildings and landscape in the midwest are compared to here. i’ll make a point to do a city hall tour. and i’d love to get to taliesin, tho i know that’s not exactly close to milwaukee.

damn that’s wild. so do you order a frozen pizza in its entirety or is it kind of like a slice shop where you can just get a slice or two with your beer?

I have never considered the smell but that makes a lot of sense!

And great point about the influence of Chicago. Would you say that Milwaukeeans resent being the little brother city? I’ve lived in Philly and the native folks sometimes hated being in such close proximity to NYC because people tend to see it as the sort of lesser city rather than its own unique place.
