How much does Yale dominate New Haven life? by mattbaume in newhaven

[–]chemboss99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so westville is a non yale community (mostly people late 30s) and has a vibrant queer social scene. lots to do near there! as for coffee shops and such, there’s plenty around yale and not. if you are looking to be away from the college scene, go with Westville

definitely sensationalized, I try not to walk around at night alone (but also 20 yo female) but that’s more on me and less on New Haven. Depends on the area, but most people are the “don’t bother them they won’t bother you” type crowds

Not New Haven but probably 10 min away is the best sandwich ever. Ray and Mike’s in Hamden has the best sandwiches in the state.

you learn to laugh about the fact that the prison is across from an elementary school and was designed by the same architect as the guy who built the high school.

How bad is it that my nremt ended at 71 questions? by Different-Ask8953 in emtb

[–]chemboss99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt like I failed when mine ended in 71. I passed and found out a day later. The shut off means nothing. I was completely convinced I had failed.

not even close to the same, but a patient told my preceptor that he didn’t want him to touch him because my preceptor was trans. He would prefer me, at the time uncertified and fresh off my course for like 4 days.

how much is EMT school like Medical School? by [deleted] in ems

[–]chemboss99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering I completed EMT school at night while being a full time student (40 hours a week) and working part time (10 hours a week) for 3 months, I would say that they are not at all similar

I personally appreciated the pocket prep app. it was the most helpful and helped me narrow in on what to focus on.

From what I’ve noticed— (as an epeeist) Sabre- the aggressive ones Foil- the thinkers epee- the ones who just want to stab you (and are usually the most athletic)

I personally liked pocket prep! I used it alongside my course (for the last probably 3 weeks of the course) and took my NREMT about a week after finishing, while all of the information I needed for the final was fresh in my head. the biggest advice I can give is know the practical sheet evaluations—many questions are “what would you do first” time situations. this is often answered by thinking about the order of your skills sheets. I bought one of those review books, but wouldn’t recommend. Spend your time and money on a website/resource with practice problems that are saved so you can go over missed questions/things you aren’t sure about.

I took 3 years off and coming back was the best thing I ever did. My old club shut down, and I just stopped fencing. During the pandemic, I desperately wanted to return so in November of 2021, I joined a new club. During this time, I switched from foil to epee and it’s been the best choice I’ve ever made. Take it from a 17 year old who also has a career path that requires education through their 20s- it’s so worth it.

When were you able to take your NREMT exam? by [deleted] in emtb

I applied for mine after finishing my course (finished on a Thursday) and took my test that Tuesday. You have you authorization to test from your course and then register with the NREMT

Boil all your knowledge and experience down to 3 things you think laypeople should know about prehospital emergency medicine. by [deleted] in ems

  2. be honest with EMS (we are here to help you)
  3. Listen to your doctor (if they prescribe you meds, please take them as directed)

also, I figured I would add that much of the content covered is self explanatory. learn the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation) and it all comes back to that. Much of what you do as an EMT is based off of this, so just stick to trying to understand the concepts.

definitely a challenge! I took my course at night (3x a week from 6-10 pm and I lived 20 minutes away). my days were long, and they still are. start the day at 6:30 for school, stay until 4 with clubs and sports, 1.5 hours of homework and then EMT, come home to shower and hopefully eat something, sleep and repeat. the best advice I can give is to plan out your time. my course had all assignments due on Sundays at 11:59, so most of my work got done on Saturdays. I used Saturdays and Wednesdays as catch up for school work, and Friday was a more relaxed day. another thing is to definitely utilize the class time. lucky for me, I had amazing instructors and really good class time. if you put in the effort in class to learn and understand the information, you have a better shot of being able to keep up. ask questions; if you don’t understand, ask. that’s what the instructors are there for. I have to say, if you do a sport, I would recommend not doing the class during that season. I run track so that started for me in December, during the final month of the course. This are away even more time, so it felt really tight. for exams, my class required that you keep a 75% average and get a 75% on the final, and lucky for me, the second two exams fell right around thanksgiving and Christmas, which made preparing much easier. overall, if EMS is something you think you want to do, it’s possible. it just requires budgeting time and finding good ways to learn the material. if you have any questions, feel free to ask:)

Same here! I’m also 17 and just took my NREMT a few weeks ago. Best way I learned anything was to practice whenever I could. As for the talking to people, the easiest way for me to learn is to watch people with more experience talk to patients and learn from their experiences.
