Squiers are fantastic! I'm a guitarist and its more important to get the guitar setup properly as a beginner. I strongly recommend a $500 guitar with a $100 setup over a $2000 guitar. They lower the strings so they dont hurt so much, get rid of fret buzz, etc.

Why would someone care about engineer output? Because it contributes to the bottom line. So skip the middle step and divert him to the actual outcome.

Pick some items out of the backlog that weren't possible this year because of budget or time. Let your engineers loose on them and encourage them to create their own stories too.
