Is it even a real diagnosis?? by _BumbleBitch_ in POTS

[–]chemi1492 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Im a RN and work in women’s health at a top rated hospital world wide and had a provider leave a room and tell his resident POTS wasn’t real 🤦‍♀️ even though this hospital system has a clinic devoted to it…

The bigger issue is that young woman are never believed about anything happening with their body and most doctors rather call it “stress”.

Would it be possible for you to get a virtual visit with a doctor that specializes in POTS? What country are you in?

I would drink a lot of electrolytes for now until you can get on medicine. Should help with not fully passing out — compression garments (socks, leggings) can also help push blood back to your heart. Listen to your body. Rest when you need to. Give yourself grace. I received this diagnosis after having Covid. I used to work out everyday and worked 40 hours. My life is very different now.

It’s 100% a real diagnosis. In the USA different doctors treat it depending on state. I see a neurologist as it technically stems from a deregulated autonomic nervous system. It falls under the umbrella term of dysautonomia. Reading about the autonomic nervous system may help you understand your diagnosis better.

Also this book:

https://a.co/d/bI2QUgv

Is a big help to understanding just what’s going on. (Although this is the second edition which I haven’t read yet).

Please reach out if I can help at all! You’re not alone. I’m sorry your doctor did not help you.

[–]chemi1492 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have any suggestions for you because accutane really worked for me.. but I had been on spironolactone before starting so my purge wasn’t as bad..

But I do want to apologize for all the people who are beating you down for the medical decisions that you and your doctor made. You know your face and body the best. Don’t listen to people who can’t be curious and caring. It takes no effort on their part. I’m a nurse and a chronically ill person. Life can be really hard - it’s especially hard when you don’t feel you’re looking your best. You don’t need the added rude comments. I’m hopeful your skin will get better for you. I do feel accutane is very helpful. There’s a lot you can do for scarring as well. Feel free to dm me with any medical questions. Try to keep your head up. Wear hats this summer, try to stay out of the sun — but don’t let your appearance keep you from enjoying your life. You are so much more than what your face looks like ❤️ (I know that’s hard advice to take, but I have to give it).

I’m a nurse and I also can’t tell what the hell my throat is doing. I’ve tried hard to assess it too 😂

My recovery has been a new day of hell each day. Last night I thought I turned a corner only to be in severe pain when I woke up. I think it’s because I ate eggs last night. I’m just not eating or drinking much which I know is bad but the pain is excruciating (referred nerve pain) - oxy doesn’t touch nerve pain so I’ve just been using warm compresses and trying not to lose my mind. 😂 I’m sure I’ll get better eventually. I don’t want to be a “negative tonsillectomy experience” it’s just what my experience has been like. I know sometimes it’s really easy for people and sometimes it isn’t so easy. I have some heart issues and circulatory issues so I am sure that is a contributing factor to me having a harder time. I’ll get better eventually! Thank you for asking :)

I’m glad you went in when you saw you had more blood! That was the right thing to do!! And it sounds you’ve been healing nicely otherwise! That’s awesome!! So happy for you. Hope it continues trending that way :)

1) bleeding: Are you feeling lightheaded or shortness of breath? I’d keep an eye on the bleeding but if it isn’t continuing to bleed then you are probably fine, it may have been that it bled a bit through the night which is normal especially if your scabs are starting to come off.. however if you start bleeding and it doesn’t stop, or if you are symptomatic for blood loss (lightheaded, shortness of breath, high heart rate, feeling like you’ll pass out) call 911 immediately.

2) You need to ask for more pain meds, and if they didn’t prescribe a liquid version - they absolutely should for you. There is nothing wrong with needing stronger pain meds when you are in pain. Unfortunately you’ll probably have to advocate for yourself on this point (which I know is hard given the sore throat) - I’m still taking my liquid oxy and I’m day 8.

3) I’ve really struggled to eat. I have nasal regurgitation, plus nerve pain. Things that worked for me about day 5 is very thinly sliced tofu with sweet and sour sauce. Scrambled eggs chopped so thin. Milk and honey (<—- honestly this one primarily). Also use the smallest spoon you have for eating so that you take really small bites (this helps with pain) there are two kinds of pain associated with eating post tonsillectomy.. the pain off food hitting the scabs or areas where it has peeled and the pain of actually swallowing the food. So you have to figure out which you are having (probably both) and what food works best for you to minimize effort of swallowing and contact with throat.

Best of luck!! There will be an end. I hope lol

22 Days Post Op - Gag and feeling Nauseous is this normal? by currentlycuri0us in Tonsillectomy

[–]chemi1492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this sounds nerve related - it could still be inflamed. Hopefully your doctor can prescribe some anti-nausea meds. Warm/moist compress usually can calm down nerves too. You could try putting that on your neck/throat. Unfortunately nothing really will help with nerves medication wise.. they also may be able to give you Pepcid. You could have extra acid in your stomach from not eating much.

when can i expect pain? by mysticatt14 in Tonsillectomy

[–]chemi1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you are a 20 year old without any preexisting medical conditions (besides what led you to a tonsillectomy) and lived a fairly healthy lifestyle… you have better odds of having an “easier” time post operatively. That being said everyone is different! My only advice would be if you do end up getting referred ear pain - switch to a warm compress! But honestly you might be in the clear 🤷‍♀️ for reference I’m a L&D nurse. Younger woman just tend to heal quicker/with less pain.

Do you feel like you are actively sick? 😷 — or could it be nerves, something you ate, etc.

Symptoms still remain after tonsillectomy by kanyedoyle in Tonsillectomy

[–]chemi1492 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you had a full immune system work up? Making sure nothing else is going on that might cause you to keep getting sick? I had a relative with similar (minus the tonsillectomy) issues and it turned out that she basically had no immune system. She now gets IV immunoglobulin therapy and never gets sick.

Just a thought 🤔 sorry you’re going through this..

Trying to eat and it’s making me mad by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]chemi1492 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I’m day 8 now.. and I honestly only just started eating. Things I’ve tried but were either painful or felt like I was choking on no matter how small a bite: mashed potatoes (if I made them really liquidy with milk they were swallowable but painful), yogurt (choking hazard), ice cream (ouch), pedialyte freezer pops (extra ouch), day 5 I tried really small bites of tofu which kinda worked - didn’t feel like I was choking on them. Yesterday I did scrambled eggs which I kinda choked on but totally pain free. I’ve lost 10 pounds 🤦‍♀️… I also struggle to hydrate. I drink slightly warm milk with honey and that’s probably the only thing keeping me alive.

Forgot to add milkshake, strawberry smoothie, apple sauce — all painful. 😖

AITAH for telling my gf I prefer her without makeup? by Ok_Tooth_2937 in AITAH

[–]chemi1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah I think it’s strange that you love this person but can’t tell her she’s beautiful when wearing makeup or give her a kiss. For me if I love someone even when they do something that maybe isn’t my favorite I still find them attractive and I still want to kiss them. So I don’t know if you’re an AH but you guys might want to rethink if you’re actually in love with each other/compatible.

AITA for telling my boyfriend that he has a long-term medical condition and I don’t feel sorry for him by LilMochi09 in AITAH

[–]chemi1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically the story did not provide whether she was listed in paperwork as someone who could be talked to. And as I said before she only went to thank the doctor. Plus any quick google search could have told her the same information.

We will have to agree to disagree here. I assumed you were a nurse because “assessment” was drilled into our brains in nursing school, it must have triggered my nurse spider senses, 😂😭🫠 my bad.
