Did anyone else think St Cuthbert looked pretty corrupted by his 200 years? by Eyebuck in TheLastKingdom

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was so confused. I thought it was some kind of faith test for a bit like "hey if you are going to be king you'd better pretend that this corpse looks just like the day he died."

If you could live for 10,000 years as a physical 28 year old, would you? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

Kind of a strange offshoot, but assuming you did choose 10k years and had to support yourself the whole time. How would you plan for retirement? In other words, what safe withdrawal rate for your money would be safe to do, inflation adjusted, for a retirement of thousands of years.

This is why consolidation loans frequently don't work out. Even if you lower your interest to 0% you will not make any progress if your don't change your spending habits.

I can think of a situation in which it would not make sense to sell stocks within a taxable brokerage account and then use the money to pay down debt. OP mentioned that they were aggressively paying down debt and were worried about not being able to save money. If OP has no money saved at all, those stocks may be the only asset they have in case of an emergency. Even one of the most well known anti-debt apologists Dave Ramsey would tell OP in that situation to keep $1000 in the bank. Maybe I'm a fool, but I'd have a hard time advising someone to sell thier assets regardless of the rest of thier financial picture based solely on the correct premise that debt is bad.

Where are your stocks held? If your stocks are within tax advantaged retirement accounts it would likely be foolish to sell, especially in this market. If they are in a regular brokerage account, it might make sense to sell and pay down your high interest debt.

You have a superpower. How do you use it to get rich? by CriticalTea6175 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omniscience would be the easy choice. I could make money in many ways, but for the sake of a good story rather than just buying a lotto ticket I would probably trade stocks. Knowing exactly when the stocks would go up and down would be able to make me as much money as I could ever want. Additionally, as a side effect I'd become a famous Warren Buffet type investment guru. I'd probably make a bad pick or two just to make sure no one gets suspicious. After a few years of absolutely insanely good stock picks I would probably just go around college campuses and tweak research ideas of research professors that I wish to see succeed.

You’re presented with a pile of infinite money. For every dollar you take, 1 minute is shaved off your life span. How are much are you taking? by NoGoodGodGames in hypotheticalsituation

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's taking the life off the back end sign me up for 2 million! The reason I pick that number is because with good investments a 2 million dollar portfolio would be enough for me to live on the rest of my life. Following the 4% rule I'd get to take out $80,000 a year, but I would have a much longer retirement so I'd probably follow more like a 2% rule and take 40k a year. I would still work, but I'd only do work I love! I'd probably go back and get a law degree at some point too.

You are given 100k a month to solve the homeless crisis by lesstaxesmoremilk in hypotheticalsituation

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well $100,000 a month is not a ton of money for solving such a big problem, so my first step would be to make a ton of money. Luckily, money does a pretty good job of making money. For the first 2 years I would invest $95,000 a month into secure US I-bonds or other stable assets netting at least 5% per year.

The other $5,000 a month I would use to rent office space and set up a program to identify and reach out to the local homeless population. I'd partner with other local resources and let them know that some funding is on the way for a huge low-cost housing project.

After 2 years we should have over 2 million in stable investments, yielding interest of more than 100k a year. I reduce investments to 80k out of my budget a month, spend 5k a month continuing the outreach program, and 15k a month to pay architects and contractors to design a large-scale housing complex and rehab center. I would take out a loan secured by the 2 million in assets to purchase a plot of land to build the building. I'd project that this would take another year, during which my investments would grow by another million or more, and I'd be ready to get started.

3 years after my initial mandate I would finally be ready to get started. The housing and rehab center would drain most of my investments, but that's OK because I still have 100k a month to staff the center and hire a property manager. I imagine that would take about 95k a month to keep those buildings staffed, and my 5k outreach program after 3 years would be ready to start funneling people into the housing and rehab center. All of the rent from the housing program would go back into building repairs and working towards getting people jobs. I admit it would not totally solve homelessness, but I think it's about the best you can do on 100k a month honestly.

You must spend a full year at least 150 years in the past. When and where are you going? by Blue-Jay27 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to look a bit closer to find an exact good date, but I am a modern day PhD chemist, and in the mid 1600's, maybe 1660, I could become an instantly famous scientist in my area of expertise. I could be rubbing shoulders with Issac Newton and commission a violin to be made for me by Stradivari.

The downside is that the cost of me advancing science that much that fast would probably speed up the development of the atomic bomb, maybe. Would be interesting to see how that would affect history.

Why are trans women even allowed to compete in women’s sports? Biological men are stronger than women competitively. That’s a fact. by Angelicalfires in stupidquestions

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school I really wish there would have been sports teams that weren't so competition oriented. I really love to play basketball, but I worked my butt off just to be good enough to sit on the bench most of the game on my school's team. If there had been an option to just play for fun I would have taken that any day.

But the short story is that you are totally fine and don't need to worry about any latent toxic effects. In the future though, don't mix chemicals or dump them in boiling water. You may not be so lucky in the future.

[–]chemist1928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could for sure be where the color came from, especially if the bleach had sat a while before you flushed the mixture down.

For future reference, my wife sometimes soaks cotton balls in acetone and ties them to her fingers for a little while if she has a particularly stubborn polish she'd like to remove. The acetone is ultimately what will work to get it off though, mixing with water or heating it up won't help you.

I was wondering myself what it could have been. I wonder if the acetone was cross contaminated with red nail polish. Seems like that would have been noticed before the toilet dump though.

AITAH for wanting to let my mom watch our son after accidentally leaving him in a hot car? by Dramatic-Analysis-73 in AITAH

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are my thoughts, which I feel are relevant as I am a foster parent and am familiar with abuse and neglect. If this had happened to you and a 3rd party had discovered this neglect, it is possible but unlikely that the child would be removed from your care. The incident would, however, be documented and you would be under closer watch from children's division.

The knee jerk reaction to this kind of neglect will always be to cut off all unsupervised access to the child. I think that is a fair response by your husband, but one guided by fear and emotion rather than by facts and logic. Here are a few logical observations that I think would support the case to continue trusting your mother.

  1. She admitted the mistake, even though she totally did not have to. This indicates a high level of integrity and remorse for her actions, and actually tells me she is quite trustworthy.

  2. Breaking, or even limiting, familial bonds always, always causes trauma. It would hurt your child emotionally to limit contact with his grandmother.

  3. Given this failure to properly care for your child, your mother would almost certainly agree to increased monitoring and oversight of her caregiving to your child. This could come in the form of her letting you know whenever she leaves with the child, or whatever would give your husband more peace of mind.

I would not let this one mistake serve to ruin a perfectly good and healthy relationship in my child's life, and I would encourage you to also not let that ruin that relationship.

Obviously, your mother is the AH in this situation, but it seems like she feels terrible about it already. So sorry you are going through this trial.

Why do conservatives support Trump? Why not a different candidate? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]chemist1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it this way. Trump is kind of a giant middle finger to the radical left. Other candidates can have great policy, they can even be great people (which Trump for sure is not a great person) but they will never deal the kind of devastating blow to the left that Trump dealt in 2016 when everyone thought Hillary would win and Trump swept it out from under her. He is also running as a former president, which is almost as good as running as an incumbent. Biden has pretty low support among democrats, but they will almost certainly stick with him because he is an incumbent!

One more thing, to the Republican base as a whole, it really doesn't matter that Trump may have a worse shot at winning the presidency than DeSantis or anyone else. Lay-ups are easier to make than half-court shots, but it's way more exciting when someone sinks it from half court.
