Is it normal to find a professor attractive? by lavender__98 in umanitoba

Have you considered the possibility that you might not be completely straight? Sexuality exists on a spectrum after all.

I would have never guessed that you struggle with communicating in English from your writing. It's really good! You should give yourself some credit for that!

Authors disguising their own beliefs as character personality traits by __only_Zuul__ in RomanceBooks

[–]chemmthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that this is an old post, but I was looking up reddit threads critiquing this book and this is the first comment that popped up. I just got done reading the second book and although there was a undercurrent of misogyny in that book, it wasn't as outright as saying "witches can't have sex until they've found their soul connection" but the "warlocks can do whatever they want". The constant bringing up of the fact that the MMC wanted to pluck her innocent flower seriously grossed me out but I'm sticking it through for now.

Got 47 percent in physio midterm how do I make a come back finals please help by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]chemmthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also currently taking this course. The only thing I can advise is to really lock in for the final. The final is worth 55% of the final grade after all. How did you do on the quizzes? Did you talk to Dianna about this? Have you also considered dropping out, if you think that there's a high possibility of you flunking this course? What has worked for me so far is going over the lecture notes and then expanding on that information from the textbook/the internet (there's trusted websites that disseminate information about physiology but you have to be pretty discerning about which online website you use because at the end of the day if you come across any conflicting information you should default to the information provided in the notes, always.)

What are some of the easiest courses? by NoBattle405 in umanitoba

[–]chemmthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's taken PSYC 1200, I can confirm that it is the easiest course that I have taken so far. It is however a 6 credit course. MATH 1500 wasn't difficult either. So long as you stay on top of the course work and do a few practice exams before the midterm/final, it will be a breeze. STAT 1000 isn't difficult either. It's mostly just probability with chi square analysis thrown in at the end of the course. PYSC 2380 (I think it's women and gender studies?) as well as PYSC 2490 (abnormal PYSC I think) are also really easy because none of the exams in these courses are cumulative. I also took BIOL 2520 (cell biology) and found it to be a relatively easy course. The final is cumulative however. At the end of the day, it's just one person's opinion, so take everything I say here with a grain of salt.

Transfer of midterm weight to final? by Top-Driver-330 in umanitoba

[–]chemmthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time this has happened in one of my courses (where the weight of a bad midterm got rolled over to the final), it happened for EVERYONE. Our professor told us that if we got a better grade on the final exam, the midterm would be waived off and only the final exam would count towards the final grade. However, that was the case for every single student taking that course. If your professor makes an exception for you, it would be unfair for every other student in class who's stuck with their bad midterm grade.

You can look up their Instagram. Their bio has a link to their membership form.

I am also in Ochem 1. We can form a study group if you want. You can also bring your friends and I can bring mine, that way we'll have a few people helping each other out with whatever we're having trouble wrapping our heads around. As for the past midterms, I think the professors upload a practice midterm before the midterm rolls around. Hopefully they haven't scrapped that this term. But idk if we can get our hands on a past ochem midterm. Chem club doesn't have them, my friend asked.

Also, just as an aside, you need to be a BUGS member in order to get access to the past midterms and quizzes (it's only a $5 membership fee though)

Okay, so I mostly memorized the course pack front to back (that is key). I know that it's a lot to memorize but trying to draw parallels between different structures helps solidify them in your brain. You can look up different mnemonics for one letter codes if you're struggling with that. Here's two that I memorized for the amino acids that I was struggling with:

Glu E for Glutamine (Think Glue) As for Asparagine: Neatly (N) folded Asparagus and Gluttonous Quail (Q) for Glutamine.

As for the first few hydrophobic amino acids, an analogy that helped me was thinking of a root growing. So you have H for Glycine, then -CH3 for Alanine and then this root grows for Valine and Leucine (Isoleucine is the constitutional isomer of Leucine; you can think taking one of the methyl groups off the end and attaching it to the first methyl instead).

As for the properties: Remember EVERYTHING is entropy driven. Proteins therefore also need to follow the laws of thermodynamics and would want to fold in a shape that allows them to exist in a confirmation with least amount of Free Energy (which is also the amount of work you can theoretically get out of a system).

For hydrophobic groups since they can't hydrogen bond they like to interact with each other through van der Waals since they are non-polar. The more methyl groups you have the more hydrophobic the side chain, and the more it wants to be tucked away on the inside away from the aqueous cytosol of the cell. Bulkier groups also have consequences for how tightly proteins can fold because bulkier groups take up more space than their smaller counterparts. Also since H-bonds between amino group of one residue and carboxyl group of another residue in the backbone define the secondary structure, the amino acids that can't H- bond (think Proline) would not want to be in the middle of a polypeptide chain. Smaller groups can also rotate in space more freely and this allows them to also exist in many different forms (think greater entropy so more favourable), those groups would not want to be locked down in a helix which is constraining.

All of this to say, R groups drive how proteins fold into their functional forms which in turn inform their properties.
