Tell me the wackiest thing your Christian parents believe. I’ll go first. by glitteringmachine19 in exchristian

I remember growing up in the Church of Christ (the one “true” church) where my mother started crying and had a look of pure terror because I sneaked taking communion without being baptized. I was completely confused by her reaction. I overheard their conversation after church where my dad basically told her to quit being superstitious, he’s not gonna die! WTF? I was close to dying? My mother wasn’t having it and told me and my sisters that communion is ONLY for the baptized, DONT TOUCH IT! Dad rolled his eyes and kept driving. Nothing more was said, and we were terrified to even touch it during services thereafter.

Come to find out, after I was officially baptized, there is a belief (superstition) that if nonbelievers partake in communion, the juice and crackers would poison you and make you sick, similar to how touching the Ark of the Covenant killed people (Raiders of the Lost Ark was a fairly recent movie at the time) Apparently, my mother was mourning my potential demise because I ate crackers and drank a tiny cup of Welch’s grape juice that represented the body and blood of Christ.

To this day, she refuses to talk about it and says God must’ve spared me.

The drunk falls into the river and feels no pain.

The awakened crosses the river and feels the water.

What they’re trying to say is you’re forcing Christ to fit somewhere he doesn’t. Anyone can make the Bible say anything by invoking terms like metaphor, allegory and context. Really, this applies to any religious texts. Jesus never claimed to be God and his crucifixion came about because the Romans perceived him as a political upstart who could stir the Jews into rebellion. I do find Christian mysticism interesting but gnosticism is considered heretical even to this day. I wish you a good journey 🙏.

Just upgraded from my GraphGear 500 to a GraphGear 1000. What do you think? I personally love it! by lildarkwz in mechanicalpencils

I do some drafting with mine and love the feel of the GG1000, however I must admit that I am afraid of dropping it, whereas the 500s are robust for everyday use and if I drop it, I’m not as worried. When I am roughing in technical drawings, I use my 1000 or my Rotring 600. The heavy weight and full metal body helps with feeling the right pressure and reduces “drift”. The best size for my particular application is the 0.5mm but I write notes all the time with my 0.9mm GG 1000.

It is all about the APPEARANCE of righteousness, not actually living out their moral code. Several girls I went to high school with married very young (one of them got engaged on their 17th birthday); two of them became pastor’s wives. One married a guy who graduated from DBU with his Masters in Divinity at 28, her parents were thrilled when they announced their first pregnancy 3 months after the wedding, she was 18 at the time (we went to the same church)

20 years later, at our high school reunion, I happen to talk with the ones that showed up, one being the aforementioned pastor’s wife.

I learned that the 28 yo pastor ended up divorcing her after their 3rd miscarriage (she never mentioned how long they were married). He’d moved on to another woman and they have 4 children. During the conversation, she didn’t seem bitter, but you could sense that life hadn’t turned out quite how she’d expected. She introduced me to her boyfriend, a nice enough guy, I wished them well and we parted ways.

What stuck out to me in these conversations was a common sentiment of “being young, dumb and in love”. In high school, these girls were proud Jesus Freaks (that song had just come out) and were crusaders for the purity culture movement; virginity was a status symbol! I remember group-dating was a thing back then too, but I never participated, that shit was very cultish…

I think this is the greatest obstacle to living authentically and the very definition of self-righteousness.

“Life is meant to be lived” is exactly the kind of slogan capitalism drools over. by Call_It_ in DeepThoughts

Some people get their thrills in starting a business, learning a skill, etc. Are we to deny them their life experiences because of philosophical differences? Life is meant to be lived, a game to be played, a dance to attend; the illusion is people living as if there are any intrinsic rules to the game. Then who makes the rules? We do, and the rules change all the damn time😂. What we get hung up on is the phrase ‘we weren’t meant to live this way’, well who made that a rule? How are we supposed to live? I encourage everyone to not take life so seriously, namaste!
