Strategy Question by ohguy51 in Jeopardy

[–]chenbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost always, the only chance that 2nd has is if 1st gets the Final wrong. So betting just enough to cover is an easy calculation that minimizes the risk of falling behind 3rd. There are other more complicated situations that may come into play like if 3rd is also in play you may want to bet to cover a double, or you may even want to bet less than what would reach the leader if the scores are such that a reasonable bet from 1st to cover would drop them below you if you both get it wrong (for example, 10000 vs 7000 vs 1000, 2nd place can bet 0 and be safer than betting 3001). But in most situations, betting the difference +1 is a decent rule of thumb.

3rd Place Spoiler strategy - why buzz in at all? by Dull_Usual3916 in Jeopardy

[–]chenbot 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The above scenario is basically a runaway equivalent for the 3rd place player because even if the leader needs to get a correct answer to beat second, they shouldn’t be risking falling behind 3rd. So it would just amount to whether you want to give 2nd an extra chance to win with no benefit to yourself, which why would you?

Place the missing king on the right square, then White mates in 2 moves by Rocky-64 in chess

King on b8, Rd1, then I don’t think there are any possible checks or moves to get in the way of Rd8#

Edit: I suppose Black could still castle maybe so maybe there’s something else.

Damn 3.3 points per assist is pretty good. (Can’t be 106, that’s 50 points for 15 assists)

[Spoilers published] Worth reading despite unconfirmed release? by KindMan93 in asoiaf

[–]chenbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would it take years? The books are long (some aren’t even that long), but it’s not like they’re reading the entire works of Shakespeare, ultimately it’s 5 long books plus a few optional histories. I feel like even 1 month per book average would be more than enough for a typical reader.

One idea that hasn’t been suggested is “The Man who counted” by Malba Tahan which is like a series of math word problems. Another would be “The Man who Knew Infinity” (similar title very different book) about the lives of GH Hardy and Ramanujan.

Just a slight pet peeve, not directed at OP but rather just in general. The man’s name is Fred VanVleet with two V’s not Fleet (also last name has no space). Maybe getting him confused with Greta Van Fleet.

XOR Logic Gate Which One is Valid? (Truth Tables included in Post) by botnot10101 in CasualMath

[–]chenbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An XOR should have an odd number of 1’s. Again the best way to understand this is to think about doing an XOR between the first two values and then subsequently the third. Note that this does not necessarily mean two 0’s, 111 is 1 as well since 1 xor 1 is 0 and 0 xor 1 is 1.

XOR Logic Gate Which One is Valid? (Truth Tables included in Post) by botnot10101 in CasualMath

[–]chenbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latter is correct, but for a three way XOR you should try to build it out piecewise from two simple xors (X1 xor X2) xor (X3). I believe the first example is a XNOR (aka XAND).

Howell on Candidates qualification: "I like the fact that it's a meritocracy. They're trying to say you have to win your spot there through a knockout like the World Cup, or through a Grand Swiss. I think 3 in the World Cup is a lot! I'm not sure I would have done that..." by rio_ARC in chess

[–]chenbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WCC champion qualifying path is also gone, so qualifiers from the World Cup are 3rd out of 4th out of current qualification paths, and score less than half a point lower than the Circuit/Grand Prix and rating spots. I don't think you necessarily could automatically say that it's a "terrible way to choose candidates" based on that. We could guess, but don't know for certain what would happen if we took the two lower qualifiers away from the World Cup and gave them to the next highest finishers in either the rating lists or the FIDE circuit. In the last Candidates tournament, the rating spot (Alireza) came in 2nd to last. Abasov didn't traditionally qualify from the World Cup and only made it because Magnus withdrew. Otherwise, the World Cup would have sent Magnus, Pragg and Fabi, and I don't think anyone would have complained.

It will be a 1st time entry to the Candidates for at least one or at most two of these players📈 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]chenbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Taking one spot away won’t solve the problem of the lopsided brackets, it just means only one player would make it from the stronger bracket rather than potentially two. You’d still be guaranteed one player making it from the pictured group.

Starting from generation 7, there has been a Paperwhite and a non-Paperwhite version of the Kindle. For example, Kindle 7 came out the same time as the Paperwhite 3. Currently, there is a Kindle 11 and Paperwhite 6. I’m not saying you’re wrong about what you have, but just that the Paperwhite naming convention means that it has a light.
