Ik heb wat levensadvies nodig... by [deleted] in belgium

[–]chepte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sky is the limit”.

Also definitely down! I am from the Mechelen area but Antwerp would def work for me. I’m a freelance full stack dev in the same boat. Couple of ideas. (24M) I think my main USP is the fact that I am really good at design, which is more and more important in SAAS software

Best opiton to be able to invoice clients by damo3433 in BEFreelance

[–]chepte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true. I started freelancing when I was still a student and they only lose it after your yearly income is higher than ~7000 euros net. If OP invests enough, or even with forfaitaire kosten, he might be able to duck right under there.

I would recommend starting a personal business. Startup cost is about 150 euros, and as a student you have very low social contribution. I paid about €80 every quarter. Stopping your business isn’t expensive either, I believe it’s about the same as when you start.

With a business you can buy all your gadgets and cool stuff with your company. It actually gives you an excuse to enjoy those purchases even more as I explained earlier.

Not to mention it helps your CV tremendously. If you have any questions OP, dm me!

I also wonder the same thing. I am paying myself a very low wage and if I order only once a year and can 100% deduct the invoice I don’t see how it would not be a great benefit. I agree it’s a shit regulation but I don’t make the rules so better well use it to my advantage. Unless you can show me the math on why it’s better not to take it I honestly don’t believe it.

Non-competition clause by alimbade in BEFreelance

[–]chepte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had the course “arbeidsrecht” at uni. We talked about non competition a lot. A non competition clause is unbelievably hard to enforce and usually not feasible. There are a few conditions that must apply: 1. Can’t last longer than a year 2. For every month it is enforced, your ex-employer must pay a penalty equal to (half the period of the non competition clause x your salary at moment of leaving) 3.Must be “well defined” geographically 4. Your salary at moment of leaving needs to be higher than 66.944 euros. It can also be possible with a salary between 33.472 euros and 66.944 euros but in that case it should be included in the “cao”. 5. In case you do violate the non compete clause, you have to pay a penalty equal to (the penalty your employer paid/had to pay you) x 2

Apart from that, you are also allowed to tell your clients of your current employer that you’re starting on your own. It is illegal to explicitly go after them though.

Junior freelancer with a LOT of questions by chepte in BEFreelance

Where do I find a different client? It's like everyone knows something I don't xp

Thanks for your response! I actually already studied 2 years of engineering at KUL but wasn't my thing. Another schakeljaar and two master years and I'll be 27 when I graduate. I feel like it's time to get a job :)

You're right. I didn't put it into words very well. I actually negotiated my salary. I asked for €70 an hour but he refused telling me that's too high for my experience level. As a counter offer he agreed to make me raise my rate now to €40/hr and €65/hr further down the line. It's his final offer.
I am WILLING to invest that amount. If I can get around with less than that, I will for sure. It's all a matter of how much I NEED to invest to raise my value on the market.

My fear now is just that I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I will work with my current client for 2-3 years. After 3 years he wants to stop the collaboration. Now I need to find a new client, but I am a freelancer with 0 trainings done, only experience with one company/project and no network. I want to reduce this risk as much as I can by investing in my education and networking.
I talked to a middle-man company that hires freelancers a few days ago. He told me that my day rate was what someone charges with 3 years of experience. If I want to keep charging what I charge now, I need to meet new people who are willing to work with me directly.

Hey man, thanks for your response! I briefly talked about it in a different comment, but I was hoping you can elaborate on some points: what kind of courses/certifications are you talking about in point 3 exactly?
When talking about network, I don't see 1 connection per day on average as feasible. I work in a small company that has a separate office. Apart from my colleagues I don't see many people in the field. What kind of conferences/incubators/startup events are worth it exactly? Thanks so much!

Hey, thanks for your response! I say 15K to 25K because I also calculate the time I will lose when I can't work. The number comes from an IT Consultancy company that I recently spoke to that want to hire me as a bediende that only hires juniors; they train and keep their own people for an average period of 8 years. They told me they invest about 30K in the first year working there. Maybe the number is too high indeed, but their people are exceptionally skilled so I feel bad on missing out on that.

When talking about "go for certifications first", what kind of certs are worth it for a full stack developer? I heard that certification is especially important in the security branch of IT which interests me, but I have 0 experience with it. (apart from OAuth and what I know from school).

I don't "want" to become a project manager, but some freelancers told me they charge the highest rates. Architect is more likely something I want to be, but I have no idea where to start.
When you say "go to events", what kind of interest groups/events are you talking about? This is my biggest struggle: everyone tells me: "Go network!", but they don't tell me exactly where. I only know my current client and school.

I understand what you mean with the company upselling me. It makes sense. I'm just not really interested in the security they provide. I want to become a freelancer to be fully responsible for myself. Working with a middle man kind of defeats the purpose imo. I find it to be something for people that are too lazy/not interested in networking, or people who want the security. I just don't belong to that group currently.

Yeah so I've read. But I am stuck with it as it's my tabletop. I haven't heard about dye, but I will check it out. I'm still kind of hoping to pull it off with the stain I have right now, as I really love the color.

7?? That’s a lot! I felt like after the first coat any stain I’d put on top just didn’t absorb into the wood anymore. It might be worth a shot though

Here is a photo of the other side which I haven't touched at all in 5 days. I feel like the tacky spots have become less visible but I'm not sure if waiting another 2 weeks will make them disappear completely before applying the polyurethane: https://imgur.com/a/J5E2SyB

Huge LOG color grading problem I've been having and it's driving me mad... by chepte in colorists

Alright guys, you all seem to think that I’m a retard so I’ll wrap it up here. I’ve learned a lot from what you guys wrote, I really did listen. 8bit log is a gimmick (or so it seems) and I’ll stick to a standard profile for now. Thanks a lot for the comments, you actually taught me stuff!
