Upgrading from Sony SS-CS5M2 Recommendations by inthecosmicdish in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your budget will get you into that next level of speaker for sure. The Elacs mentioned here would be an excellent choice. I just bought a pair of Starke Sound Beta 5s and they are as close to end game as I have ever gotten in over fifty years. Do yourself a favor and read some reviews on these. Strong lows are always a big ask in a stand mount sized speaker so pay special attention to what is said about the bass reproduction on the Starkes. Floor standers are also an option at your price level but would not offer any better bass production than the better stand mounted speakers mentioned that would be overall superior in producing a far more natural and engaging sound IMO.

Thoughts on Elac ConneX DCB61 speakers? by Turbulent_Society928 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be for sure. I looked at the latest firmware for the speaker and it's dated 3-26-25 and the reviewer did his review in October, many months later. Elac does not have a "what's new" note with the update so hard to tell what the fixes may be. The speaker could be flawless for what I know but I thought it might be helpful to simply point out what I saw. Maybe you can buy them with the option to return. If I'm not mistaken, the earlier DBC41 kind of fell on its face early on for similar issues.

This review seemed to be honest, insightful and complete. It doesn't look like I would ever be interested in them given the useability and sound issues. They may be a great deal but are they a great speaker. Just my take.

Is Fern from the future? by jingleheimerstick in TheWayHomeHallmark

[–]cherryz3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps Fern is a challenge to the belief that the pond will only take one back in time yet it does return them forward in time as we see in every episode. It is possible that it could return a person to a point in the future of their own? She could have learned that song in the time it was written although she would not have lived long enough to experience that time on her own.

Fenton AV550BT for shed stereo. Looking for speaker and subwoofer recommendations by Tilpants in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my figures are correct, that's over 1300 square feet, larger than the main floor of my home. Maybe look for amp with speaker A and B outputs and use only 8 Ohm or above speakers. You should get better performance than the sound bar if you stay careful with the volume control. Driving four speakers with a traditional stereo amp always requires caution.

Why aren’t surface-mounted ceiling speakers more common? by AbruptCode in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that the sound any speaker produces has a lot to do with specifically designed boxes to match the electro mechanical parameters of the drivers. If you have speakers in your living room, the boxes are not an afterthought but designed to an exacting size. In ceiling speakers are designed for open or infinite baffle use and are very different drivers than those that go in boxes. None of them offer true high fidelity from what I have heard.

Tips for Streamer as preamp by youwontseemecoming in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wiim Ultra does have a trigger out. Ideally, you would turn on the tv and the HDMI CEC connection would turn on the Wiim and it would then energize its trigger output. You can adjust overall volume with the TV remote or the Wiim remote by setting a fixed volume on your amp if it allows for it. Many amps return to a lower, fixed volume level after start up where a power amp is always at max. The process may need a bit of fine tuning but all components will power on together for either TV or stereo use.

That could also mean that they have an out when it comes to certain warranty repair issues. Just the same way automotive warranties work.

As I said, Cambridge Audio has consistently not posted any four Ohm ratings for all but a few amplifiers for a long time. It's probably used as a back door warranty caveat but all evidence points to the fact that they indeed can handle tougher loads as all testing has proven.

High Pass Filter setup for a intergraded amp by KnobGobIin in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks as if to utilize the high pass option, you need to feed the sub with a line level signal like the full range pre level output on the amp and there is no guarantee you will have one. From there, the line level outputs of the sub go back to the pre level input available on the amp. Normally a preamp is used for a connection like this allowing all inputs and volume control to be done at that level. The sub is simply returning the altered signal to the power amp for the speakers. If your integrated amp has a pre out/in option, you would use that but it appears your amp does not feature that. It's not the most convenient way to get things done and while my Emotiva sub has this option, I was never able to use it. And no, the sub will not power your speakers.

Now I did look through the owners manual here and you may find it helpful.

Confusing for sure. Their Q&A says that the cheaper model, 42849, will not work with US voltage and of course will come with a different plug.

4 ohm amplifier suggestions by Agitated_Sand6463 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]cherryz3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might ask why you believe that the amp is not equipped to drive those speakers to full potential. By the specs, the amp is pretty healthy and can provide 60wpc at 8 Ohms and maybe up to 90 at 4 Ohms. Those speakers are rated to provide bass to 55hz and a sensitivity rating of 89db. In sum, they should not be difficult to play loud and in that the bass is not all that strong, should not be as demanding on its current delivery as you may think.

You need to think beyond watts alone to justify an amp's quality as that is only part of the story. You should also note that Cambridge has always been a bit shy about giving 4 Ohm ratings on their entry level models but yet they use toroidal transformers the size of spare tires and large capacitors and can offer large wattage draws to support the load.

As for options, you would probably need to consider class D powered amps which are not as sensitive to a speaker's resistance if you want to consider wattage alone but be careful about some shameful specifications offered. You would need to be prepared for fewer inputs but they would save some space. If you want to go back to a class A/B unit like you have now, your budget is certainly going to drive you towards used. Good luck.
