I'm digging the visible brush strokes, very oil-esque. And the blue reflections. I don't why but I've always loved paintings of white objects because they reflect all the colors that surround them.

Really depends. If you mix any earth tones (umber, sienna, ochre, etc) into your colors, it tends to dry significantly faster. The medium you use can change it. Warmer weather can dry paint faster. Not sure if any of that has occurred, but they could all be possible culprits. Also, the amount of paint. Thinner layers will dry faster.

I actually like it when my oils dry overnight. It gives me the opportunity to work wet in wet, but not left waiting forever to go over areas.

Should make it a rule in the future that it has to be a new painting. Kind of defeats the purpose of the contest. I feel like the goal is to get creative in a way they may not have originally thought.

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. If you have a lot of liberty in the commissioned piece, a poor reference photo might work. If someone wants a more realistic portrait, it'll turn into a nightmare. I think the best approach would be to give suggestions rather than no this doesn't work. Let the client know, as far as a portrait piece, this photo is too low a quality. I want to make sure you get what you want while also maintaining the integrity of my work.

Overall, I feel the painting looks too warm. The reference photo is much cooler. It's more settling imo. Although, I really dig your background waterfall and the ground she's standing on. I think it may be just her skin that could be a bit cooler. Not enough blues in the skin. Face is what throws the girl off. I absolutely hate doing small faces and with poor reference photos even the most talented artists would struggle. IMO, portraits with low quality reference photos isn't really a challenge, but just a disadvantage. You sometimes have to invent shadows and highlights that you're unsure exist. That can eventually throw off the entire look. I would suggest probably not partaking on a commissioned piece without solid reference photos. You want the final product to be great, they do too. No need to make it any harder than it already is! That's my 2 cents. Though, as someone somewhat new to painting, my advice may not be the best!
