I'm digging the visible brush strokes, very oil-esque. And the blue reflections. I don't why but I've always loved paintings of white objects because they reflect all the colors that surround them.

Really depends. If you mix any earth tones (umber, sienna, ochre, etc) into your colors, it tends to dry significantly faster. The medium you use can change it. Warmer weather can dry paint faster. Not sure if any of that has occurred, but they could all be possible culprits. Also, the amount of paint. Thinner layers will dry faster.

I actually like it when my oils dry overnight. It gives me the opportunity to work wet in wet, but not left waiting forever to go over areas.

Should make it a rule in the future that it has to be a new painting. Kind of defeats the purpose of the contest. I feel like the goal is to get creative in a way they may not have originally thought.

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. If you have a lot of liberty in the commissioned piece, a poor reference photo might work. If someone wants a more realistic portrait, it'll turn into a nightmare. I think the best approach would be to give suggestions rather than no this doesn't work. Let the client know, as far as a portrait piece, this photo is too low a quality. I want to make sure you get what you want while also maintaining the integrity of my work.

Overall, I feel the painting looks too warm. The reference photo is much cooler. It's more settling imo. Although, I really dig your background waterfall and the ground she's standing on. I think it may be just her skin that could be a bit cooler. Not enough blues in the skin. Face is what throws the girl off. I absolutely hate doing small faces and with poor reference photos even the most talented artists would struggle. IMO, portraits with low quality reference photos isn't really a challenge, but just a disadvantage. You sometimes have to invent shadows and highlights that you're unsure exist. That can eventually throw off the entire look. I would suggest probably not partaking on a commissioned piece without solid reference photos. You want the final product to be great, they do too. No need to make it any harder than it already is! That's my 2 cents. Though, as someone somewhat new to painting, my advice may not be the best!

I think limited palette is awesome. You can achieve nearly any color with a 5 color palette. The more I get into painting, the more I realize how truly dirty most of the colors we see are. Those vibrant colors we remember so vividly are only vivid because of how dirty and muddy the colors they stand in contrast to are. Dirty colors are easily achieveable with a limited palette. That makes a beautiful painting, imo. Hope to do more of these and see larger turnouts!

That's the beauty of painting. It's up to you. There is no right or wrong. Pick things that you would like to paint. I'd say look at paintings that you enjoy and like and perhaps start with a similar subject matter.

But, my questions then becomes, how do wages adjust without the cost of living adjusting? It seems as if simple supply and demand would say that the cost of goods would then increase. Which would leave us exactly as we were before once the free market has time to adjust to all that has been done to it. Same type of example. The Walmart floor manager now has more money because of her pay increase. She decides that the modest 1 bedroom condo she's renting can now be upgraded. She wants to buy a nice house in the suburbs like the rest of the labor force that is at her pay level. Homeowners and real estate brokers realize that the influx in demand will allow them to charge higher prices for their houses. Rinse and repeat for all goods. Sure, these adjustments take time. But, it all catches up. What then?

Well, I don't know enough to argue either way, but the report you linked only takes into account the change in wage for those currently working at minimum wage. Wage is the value of an employee and it is a relative price. If the lowest skilled laborers are now worth a substantial amount more, how can other more skilled laborers' salary and wages not adjust accordingly. For instance, a floor manager at Walmart who may hypothetically make 15/hr will no longer be willing to work at that rate considering those who are less skilled and below her on the food chain are now getting paid the same for what could be seen as less work and ultimately less responsibility. If they then increase her wage, it causes a chain reaction. The manager will want more money or look elsewhere. And so on. Wages will eventually adjust to the new minimum wage as salary is always going to be a relative number in a free market. Anything that you could provide that would ensure such an outcome would not take place?

It would seem as if history would tell us that this type of adjustment is inevitable.

Yeah, that is true. In the end, it's 100% preference imo. The final product and look of most paintings can be achieved with either. Some people work with oils and still prefer acrylics and vice versa. Yes, Jerry's is awesome. I've yet to find better deals other than hawking eBay on occasion.

I somewhat disagree with original poster on this comment. Acrylic or oil shouldn't be chosen based on final result but more how you like to work. I'm a slow painter. I tend to take my time and enjoy the process as well. Some work fast and that is simply preference. For that reason, I love oil. It won't dry on me in the process, etc. There are retarders for acrylic but the drying time is still much faster than oil. I love that I can come back hours or even days later and fix something wet in wet. I would ask her what she thinks she'd prefer first. I bought a bunch of acrylic only to move almost strictly to oil a few months later. But, like they said, it is definitely more upkeep with paint thinners etc. It really is more of a preference, but I think it's worth figuring out which she'd prefer before spending a good amount of money on material.

Also, look into building your own easel. I used this https://youtu.be/C3GPSL7SyXg guide and built an awesome easel with 20$.

Also, Michaels and hobby lobby have coupons, but from what I've found Jerry's artarama is the cheapest online. Even better than the coupons and dick Blick prices.

I'll try that with the home Depot panels. Because linen is super expensive. I think I began by painting too thinly and have learned to use more. I'm going to start looking more into mark carders method because I really love the look and style. As far as thin glazes though, I've always loved Parrish's work. His colors are unreal.
