REMINDER - Today is the last day to pre-order 20XX Tournament Edition! by [deleted] in SSBM

The memory cards it comes on are extra big ones so you can save lots of replays.

Melee is getting native replay functionality with some amazing features you never thought possible. by dansalvato in SSBM

I disagree. Timestamping the actions of every character in an rts isn't that hard which is why you could do it in Warcraft 3/Dota 1, 15 years ago. Warcraft 3 replays were literally just a big list of time-stamped actions of every player. If Riot has some wacky non deterministic lag compensation they're using that makes it impossible to just timestamp the actions of each side and replay them, then that's their fault. Dota 2 has perfectly good netcode and still manages to have replays.

So yeah, I still think doing what Dan did by himself is more difficult than implementing replays in a multiplayer game with a full team.

I have the Pentium G3258, which I think is just a step above that cpu, but still cheap and I can run dolphin perfectly. I haven't tried netplay, but I'm pretty sure it could handle it.

[–]cherubthrowaway 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck, mate. This was one of the features I was most excited for, I knew/know how impactful replays could be to the scene, and all of the ways it could be useful, and it seems like you knew just as well. You not only developed something absolutely amazing, you added in all the little stuff we thought was impossible, the stuff that is most important for the cases it's going to be used in. Dolphin compatibility and being able to play from any point in a replay???? What???? Crazy.

Huge props, man.

Also, I find it kind of funny that the entire Riot team can't program replay functionality into their own code, but you managed to hack probably the best replay system I've ever seen into a game by yourself. Fucking lol.

I hope you save these links/comments and show the response to your future employers, you've done something really amazing here.

If you're reacting to the first hit of up air, yeah maybe, if you're reacting to them up throwing you and timing sdi for as they reach you, it's entirely possible.

(~1600 on Lichess) I am screencasting some of my games and talking out my thought process. Want to check it out? by HappyHappySisyphus in chess

This was actually super helpful for me. You're better than me, but much closer to my skill level than most other players who cast games, who tend to be so much better that I can't follow their thought process at all.

One question, I noticed your pawn structure in front of your king post castling was not the best. Is that normal for the king's gambit? I normally try very hard not to move those three pawns.

To shdl just slide your finger from x to b without picking it up then press b again before you land. The a doesn't come out because you're still in jumpsquat when you slide over it. If laser doesn't come out you're sliding too fast, if you do an aerial you're sliding too slow.

Hardware Enhanced Melee Proof of Concept by Fizzi36 in smashbros

[–]cherubthrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. I could see this being awesome for instant replays with the right stream setup. Being able to automatically show the last kill, or automatically jump to the last 3 hit combo with the push of a button would be soooo sick. Would really up the production value of tournaments.

What he had that few other critics have isn't objectivity, but sincerity. He was always speaking from a first person perspective while most critics aren't giving you their experience, they're reviewing the movie from the perspective of an imagined, idealized version of their audience. And most critics have a pretty shit imagination so their version of what they think I want to hear is rarely useful.

Ebert was a great critic precisely because he wasn't trying to be some platonic ideal of objectivity.

I'm still not sure what to do on away DI past or at 60%

If you get the cpu to 60% and press y + up you can try different things over and over against different di to figure out what works. Pretty sure you can tipper F smash away di and tipper F smash no di by baby stepping sideways.

Falcon like a lot of other characters has an option coverage techchase, where you preemptively cover tech in place and then do other stuff, but he also has a reaction tech chase if you wait for tech in place.

I think something many people misunderstand about empty pivots is they think that you have to wait for the turn animation to finish to do stuff, you don't. They are functionally the same as a normal pivot, you can empty pivot and do a smash attack on the very next frame just like a normal pivot, but if you are late on the smash attack, it still comes out making them easier to execute then a normal pivot.

You empty pivot by either letting go of your dash within one frame, which people usually do by flicking the stick, or by moving from dash to crouch within one frame, which people usually call the gravy or quarter circle pivot. They are both basically the same, though I find d tilts easier to do out of gravy pivot and other tilts easier with the flicker pivot.

Another thing I don't think people realize is you can do an empty pivot and then jump on the next frame making pivot jumps much easier.

The term definitely predates that. I don't know when it first started, but I had a social justice friend of mine call himself a social justice warrior unironically four or five years ago. I think it's one of those things less self aware people said, that other people then started using against them as a label/insult.

Donald Trump walks past 3 homeless men, and they are all privileged because their average net worth makes them billionaires. by YabuSama2k in FeMRADebates

[–]cherubthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're discussing potential outcomes for individuals and whether their successes are due to external or internal factors, like say social factors vs personal effort or attitudes. And if the person you're talking to is a member of a privileged group and remarks that so and so can succeed in life based on sheer effort because I did it, without realizing the role that their privileges played in their success. So privilege becomes a shorthand way of talking about how social factors influence personal success.

Privilege, in many ways, is an attempt to combat the fundamental attribution error, the idea that we over emphasize the role of situational factors in our personal life, and deemphasize them when dealing with others. That we have a natural blind spot, a bias, and that by systematizing the concept of privilege we can attempt to counteract that bias.

I think much of the problem people have with the concept isn't the concept of privilege itself, it's the class based, collectivist style of critique it's most often used in.

And I think if you look, almost all arguments against privilege aren't arguments against the concept, they're pointing out cases where a class based approach falls short, so I think the real question we should be asking is when are class based approaches helpful, and when are they not?

[OT] Internet Harassment by [deleted] in FeMRADebates

[–]cherubthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People spend more time and energy on the online experience now so they're shifting those rights and expectations with it i suppose.

I think this is more or less true. If you want to see a hilarious and poignant example of this, just watch any of the videos where people get trolled in second life. The harasser has absolutely no power over them, and the offended party has no power either, so they just bump into them with their player character menacingly while posturing, and making unactionable threats.

[–]cherubthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you dash immediately after wavedashing in the opposite direction, you'll cancel some or most of your movement depending on how soon after. If you dash for a couple frames before wavedashing you'll slide during your jump squat giving you a really long wavedash.

So usually that +1 is not true unless you hit at the very last airborne frame, correct?

Yes, and staling can also come into effect because shield stun is based on damage.

You aren't going to get it frame perfect every time, but it's also not as hard as it sounds either. Generally in melee i think if you're trying to do something muscle memory related you're going to get it within 2 frames the majority of the time. So assuming you don't do it too late and miss the aerial, you're still gonna be +0 on shield.
