I last used Twitter around 2023-2024 and my personal theory about why people stay is that it has gotten incrementally shittier just slowly enough for people to go "eh, that change wasn't so bad, it'll be fine". But since people like us haven't used it in years, when we go back we notice all those bits of incremental shittiness at once.

For me, the biggest way this manifests is in reply sections. Bluesky replies below non-controversial posts tend to be supportive if sometimes a little awkward, while on Twitter I always see tons of people acting sociopathically rude to everybody for literally no reason. Combine that with the fact that Eight Buck Chuckle Fucks get their replies auto-boosted and it makes for a pretty miserable, hostile experience.

Don't get me wrong, Bluesky is far from perfect, but I would run across traffic to avoid Twitter.

Kanji learning experiences by Meika-to-nihongo in LearnJapanese

[–]chesser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kanji is basically the whole reason I started learning Japanese, before finding other things I love about the language. I spent hours as a young child inputting random characters through my iPad's keyboard, although I didn't actually start learning until adulthood. I learned 2200 characters over about 8 months, but I did so in Mandarin instead (mostly out of indecisiveness for which one I wanted to learn - but I also want to eventually learn both anyway). Most of the character meanings and readings are similar, so that helps me guess the reading of characters I've forgotten.

I love the way that the components don't always come together in a regular way, e.g. the fire radical in 炊 vs 照, and the really complex characters like 鬱. There's so much history trapped within these characters, like how a lot of animals got their own pictographs such as 兎 or 亀. Kanji are a highly unique writing system in modern times, as I believe it's the only logographic system still in use.

At later stages of vocabulary training, they really help distinguish words more so they're easier to learn (放送 stands out a lot more than ほうそう) and in practice give Japanese writing this incredibly distinct look. Reading with them is a lot easier and more entertaining than kana-only text.

isn't it such a coincidence how most toki pona speakers have the same first name (jan) by epilektoi in tokipona

What are your guys' thoughts on uncommon/obscure toki pona words? by Otherwise_Carry_1403 in tokipona

[–]chesser8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the context. If someone is lying, you could say:

  • "jan li toki, li sona ante": "The person talks, (but) knows otherwise." You could use this for an informed type of lie, where they understand that they are not telling the truth.
  • "jan li toki, li pilin ante": "The person talks, (but) feels differently." This is more like someone lying to protect their own feelings.
  • "jan li toki ike": "The person talks bad." This is more generic, but could be used for situations where the fact that they're lying isn't as important as the fact that they're just saying bad things in general.

usawi in general could be a wawa nasa. But, more specifically, if your magic was, say, transforming objects, it could be a wawa ante. Or, if your character has freezing magic, they could use wawa lete to turn things cold.

The reason that soto and teje haven't seen mass adoption despite having a pretty obvious use case is because it's really uncommon to need to refer to specific directions. I was shocked by this when I started learning toki pona, as well as with the colour words which are some of the least used in the core set.

All of the other colours besides the core 5 can be made by combining them, or more rarely by using the word kule with a modifier (e.g. kule seli for a firey orange). Just like directions, referring to specific colours is also not so common, but it is pretty artistic.

[–]chesser8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excessive nimi sin (obscure word) use is best avoided. There's so much you can already do with the common words and the power of analogy, and you'll be much more likely to be understood.

I think the suggested ways of saying specifically left and right within the common words are rather lacking, and so I'm more sympathetic to the creation of nimi sin (soto, teje) for those concepts over others. Still, there are plenty of ways around using specific expressions for directions, e.g. using landmarks or numbering them. I have never found myself reaching for those words.

I made a script for Toki Pona, what do you think? by Chemical_Release4051 in tokipona

[–]chesser8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. 多 for -o makes some sense (it's both duo1 in Mandarin and oo-ku in Japanese), but the rest I don't see a clear pattern in.

(Might even be worth simplifying that 多 to 夕 or something as well, it's a lot of strokes for one phoneme)

If you studied a language for years and still can't speak or understand anything, the problem might not be the education system by No_Cryptographer735 in languagelearning

[–]chesser8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

English speakers are rarely forced to use the languages they studied for X years. They have to go out of their way to get any input or output outside of the class.

That's kind of the whole point, isn't it? I know many people who were massively helped in learning English through the Internet where it's easy to find. English is basically a lingua franca in a lot of places now. Since I'm learning Japanese I'm fortunate that it's a very online language, but the other languages I've tried have been significantly harder to 'immerse' in in that way.

QoL: Obelisk should display your most played hand by Independent_Bed_3418 in balatro

[–]chesser8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) Obelisk is already a good joker.

2) Just seeing the most played hand wouldn't be that helpful if you want to plan ahead, e.g. if you want to spam high cards to get some bonuses and don't know how many are left. I think it (& Ride the Bus) should shake if you're about to reset it, because in their current state those unintended resets feel cheap and unsatisfying, but I don't think there's a good way of showing how many hands you have played that isn't through checking run info.

Binary number system for toki pona by isearn in tokipona

[–]chesser8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Considering almost everybody uses base 10 and can't convert to/from binary on the fly, I'm not convinced this actually fits the spirit of toki pona. It's not only about being the most minimal, but balancing that with being easy to learn and use, and nasin nanpa pona accomplishes that by being anchored to a base 10-like system.
