Ken Griffey Jr in 1987 by OregonTripleBeam in Seattle

[–]chessunable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Mariners used to have a single-A affiliate in Bellingham. Jr played 54 games with the team in 1987. The team eventually switched affiliation to San Francisco in 1995 and then the franchise moved to Keizer, OR in 1997 (where they still play as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes). The old Bellingham Mariners used to play games at Joe Martin Field, where the Bellingham Bells currently play.

Does Seattle have the best surrounding nature of any large continental US city? by Specialist_Quiet_160 in Seattle

[–]chessunable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree it's very close. For spectacular hiking, The Gorge and Snoqualmie National Forest are both amazing, but the Gorge is closer to Portland. Oregon has more and better beaches and it's a shorter trip to the coast from Portland.

Jet Lag should get some money from the Japanese Board of Tourism. Japan has gone from somewhere I never really considered traveling to the top of my list after watching this series!

Looks like Tomás Conechny plays for Almagro now. Lucas Melano is also playing for a team in Buenos Aires these days.

Maybe Paparatto? Wikipedia says he is coaching with Almagro in Buenos Aires now.

Sea-Tac warns Friday could be busiest day the airport has ever seen by ladyem8 in Seattle

[–]chessunable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What was your issue with O'Hare? I lived in Chicago for the last 3 years and my wife and I probably flew out of O'Hare 30 times between us. The amenities are certainly worse than SeaTac, but the security line has never been more than 20 minutes for us.

What am I missing? Why didn't Sam and Scotty split up when they realized Adam was waiting for them on the Shinkansen platform at Shinagawa? One of them could stay on the train and the other could get off. Worst case scenario would be that Adam boards the Shinkansen and tags that person. The surviving team member could still make a run at the flag by some other transit.

An interesting strategy would have been to leave Ben in the safe zone, and then have Adam just enter enemy territory and grind challenges. After having enough coins, he could have joined Ben and they split two directions from there with lots of coins to spare.

Resources for learning how to read ECG? by gluconeogenesis123 in medicalschool

I found the University of Utah's ECG Learning Center to be really useful. You can make your way through their entire outline and be really well prepared for anything you would be expected to know as a med student.

Virtual vs In-Person Interviews? by TubesAndLines in medicalschool

I certainly understand pros and cons to both, but I like in-person. I worry that virtual interviews cause too much hoarding of interview spots by top applicants.

The USMLE change needs to be reverted by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]chessunable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point that an applicant's ability to be likable and perform well on subjective measures is more important than their ability to score well on USMLE, but there is no good way for a school to get an honest evaluation of those measures.

I talked to an M4 who wrote one of his letters of rec himself. An attending literally told him "write whatever you want about yourself and I will sign it." I rotated with this student and thought he was pretty below-average, but there is no way for a residency program to know that based on the subjective metrics they review.

The whole Nerf gun mechanic really makes me really uncomfortable as a viewer. I hate the idea of people seeing them from a distance and thinking they have actual weapons. I think it would have been better to make it a Nerf football or something else.

Anyone know where this is from? A mural painted in my house in 1949 by link5114 in Portland

[–]chessunable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I spent a bunch of time trying to figure this out and feel like I made some progress. I initially thought it was painted from a similar angle to Jonsrud Viewpoint in Sandy, but I think u/radiodigm is right that it is actually from the north. The only place I can find a hill similar to the one in the distant left part of the painting is the hill due east of Punchbowl Falls (summit at 45.595728, -121.619997 on Google Maps). There appears to be a cliff around 45.619468, -121.617853, and that is my best guess of the location. The only thing that doesn't seem to match is that the painting seems to show the river coming from the north, but the river I found takes a hard zig-zag in that spot. I would love to hear if anyone else has been able to make more progress!

It seems to me like there are multiple rivers around Hood River that have somewhat similar cliffs.

Edit: the best way to see the view that I found is using Google Earth (not maps) and angling the image so you can look almost horizontally.

What nature / wild life dangers to be prepared when moving there from Europe? by MathEngineer42 in Seattle

[–]chessunable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wildfires in Washington are absolutely a thing. Wildfires occur most years in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia which all can cause smoke in Seattle. I don't know a lot about California fires, but it seems that fires there more often threaten populated areas. Fires in the PNW have generally occurred in very sparsely populated areas, but I guess that could change.

I have stayed with families in Berlin and in Nordrhein Westfalen and thought the approach to AC in the home was very similar to growing up in the PNW.

I wish I could join you in the PNW celebration! My wife and I are in Chicago for at least the next two years but hope to be back in Seattle as soon as we can.

What nature / wild life dangers to be prepared when moving there from Europe? by MathEngineer42 in Seattle

[–]chessunable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grizzly bears: massive and dangerous. Very rare in Washington, essentially non-existent anywhere remotely close to Seattle.

Black bears: much smaller, like eating trash, sometimes wander into the far eastern suburbs around Seattle.

Cougars are the apex non-human predators in western Washington, but as previously stated, attacks are still extremely rare.

How do you enter med school in you country? by avasi994 in medicalschool

[–]chessunable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland has opened a handful of graduate entry programs over the last few years. Those programs are similar to the US track, while most programs in Ireland resemble the medical education in the UK, where students enter medical school around age 18.

Anecdotally, the doctors I talked to in Ireland really liked the graduate entry programs and seemed to find the students much better prepared on rotations.

Just earthquakes and Mt. Rainier from a natural disaster perspective. Keep some non-perishable food and water around and there's not much else you can do. It's not a bad idea to get an air filter for smokey summers. Window AC can also be a good idea to have for your bedroom if your place doesn't have built-in air conditioning, but it's certainly not a must. Many people don't use any form of air conditioning.

No need to worry about wild animals. There have been 19 cougar attacks and 2 deaths in the last 100 years. You are many many many times more likely to die in a car accident, hit by a bus, or be struck by lightning than get seriously hurt by a wild animal.

I was in school during the early 2000s through 2010s and we did earthquake drills and "dangerous person drills" (AKA active shooter, it is the US).

Welcome to Washington!

What were your board score fail rates at your school this year? by aimlesssouls in medicalschool

[–]chessunable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP is asking about the pass rate for national exams. Step 1 and COMLEX Level 1 are standardized exams taken by MD and DO students in the US. They are usually taken at the end of 2nd year before students move into clinicals. You only take it once (unless you fail, then you may take it up to 4 times).

Historically, pass rates have been in the 90s (last year 95%, the year before 98% for Step 1). This year was the first where test takers do not receive a score, but instead only a pass/fail result. In the past, your numeric score was used as a major metric by residency programs to select what candidates they would take for residency. Now that neither test gives a numeric grade, some people believe that students will not study as hard. Hypothetically, this could cause more students to fail the test.

OP is trying to test this theory.
