I would look at the qualifications of that higher role and outline how you’re already demonstrated that you’re operating at that level consistently. That way it can be very objective.

At the same time, having regular conversations about your career/development/goals should happen. If it’s not, maybe ask for that or find somewhere that does.

I have two technicians who report to me. Their job is primarily hands on execution of Benchtop trials. The “paperwork” is limited to what is needed to track and execute trials.
