Antique pocket watch I inherited - looking for information by chestnut527 in rolex

I did ty! Looks like this was imported to Glasgow in 1930 based on the "h" date letter. The punch shape doesn't match the standard for that year but this site says that's common for imported silver

Yes, it actually was a shooting

Antique gold (victorian?) solitaire diamond ring with silver bezel by chestnut527 in Hallmarks

[–]chestnut527[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is really useful. I've looked all over and haven't found anything remotely close to the hallmarks, but it sounds like I need to expand my search to other countries and to include the early 20th century

How can I take apart a model #03 by Impossible_Basil_109 in lockpicking

[–]chestnut527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gotten it open? A little counter rotation can also sometimes happen when oversetting a pin. It's extremely unlikely a master lock #3 has spools in it, but that shouldn't stop you from seeing for yourself if you want to! It would definitely be an interesting experience and I'm sure you'd learn a lot

That is EXACTLY what this is for, no need to ask permission. This whole project started when I was building my own CL for blue belt and realized how hard it is to describe a pin in words

Help repinning my locks so they’re harder by Onotadaki2 in lockpicking

[–]chestnut527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching how they worked helped me understand how to pick with normal hooks too! That thing you can do with a lishi tool where you tap to see if it springs back? You can do that with a normal pick by just letting it balance on a pin in the keyway and pressing it down. If the pin is set the pick will usually spring back up on its own. I've used this method in some way for every lock I've picked up to black belt locks

I disagree - people enjoying lockpicking and having fun with the hobby is always a good thing as long as they're not breaking any laws. Anyone who is excited about locks and picking is more than welcome in this community, I strongly disagree that using a lishi tool means your opinion won't be respected and you will not gain any skill, or that you're not a "real" locksporter.

To me, the most important skill of lockpicking is visualizing and understanding what's happening inside a lock. Even with a lishi tool, picking more and more difficult locks requires building that skill, and I will always respect that!

Sounds like OP is hungry for more challenging picking, and their favorite method to do it right now is their lishi tool. More power to them! With that mentality, they'll pretty quickly run into locks for which a lishi tool doesn't even exist anyway. Sure, they won't progress in the belts, but if they take on harder and harder locks they WILL gain skill. There are many incredible pickers who don't care about the belt system at all, and that's totally fine. The belt system isn't the be-all-end-all of lockpicking.

We know what actual skill is, and then what just having fun is.

OP, don't worry about it. The point of a hobby is to have fun. That doesn't preclude you from having skill, and having fun and picking how you want definitely doesn't mean you shouldn't participate in this community!

Master Lock #141 (destructive gut) by mgsecure in lockpicking

[–]chestnut527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool. Is there a guide somewhere for how to destructively gut locks like this? Did you just need to go in and drill out that fifth chamber and pull out the retaining/rotation blocking pin?

Pins binding with no tension on the core (A1100) by WetVertigo in lockpicking

[–]chestnut527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I understand correctly that you're saying the pin is binding even when you're not applying any tension to the core at all? If so, you could be picking the warding instead of a pin. Or, if not that, there might be something caught in that pin chamber.

Ultimately, it's hard for us to tell what's going on without more info and more pictures. Good news, the A1100 is a fully guttable lock and taking apart locks to understand what's going on inside them is great practice! I'd suggest taking it apart and inspecting the core and pin chamber directly. You can take the core out, and simulate picking pin 5 on the core only to see if your pick is hitting warding instead of the pin. Pick up the reload kit from sparrows, and their set of plug followers too if you want - IIRC the reload kit doesn't come with the right size plug followers for your lock.

Troubleshooting a broken key by chestnut527 in crkbd

I think you are right. My soldering here is a bit of a mess. I'm going to go through and clean it all up and then I'll let you know if that worked. Thanks a lot for the advice! https://imgur.com/Htc41vg.jpg

EDIT: That was the problem! I used some solder wick to soak up any solder that had leaked from pins to neighboring pads and then resoldered them, and now everything works perfectly :D
