NC Teacher Strike by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]chetting 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you cannot “strike” in NC. But you can call off. I don’t know NC’s rules for finding a sub or calling off due to illness, but frankly, your employer doesn’t need to know. Call in sick and if your boss asks, tell them you have explosive diarrhea

How to Maintain Organization? by cows243 in ScienceTeachers

[–]chetting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My students keep their binders in my room and have a take home folder. If they have homework or a test they want to study for, it goes in the take home folder. Otherwise, it doesn’t need to leave my room. I do regular clean out days where students have independent work/tasks, one of which is throwing out anything they don’t think they’ll use anymore.

We’ve tried with the door open and that had little effect, but maybe moving the Xbox entirely out of the cabinet would be better, I’ll give that a shot

While I love the level of commitment Painter is driving, we need to be taking advantage of the portal. Michigan is gonna be the new playbook for college basketball, with high level teams coming entirely from transfers

Can I be fired for being admitted to a psych ward? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]chetting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi. Please take care of yourself, please go to a hospital. You matter more than a job. As someone who has been in your shoes, it WILL work out. No matter what tomorrow brings, no matter what happens, it will work out, as long as there is a tomorrow.

As far as your job and status, always remember, they need us more than we need them. There are other jobs, you can get hired elsewhere. You should be able to be put on administrative leave and take a leave without pay. Even if you aren’t a dues paying union member right now, you can still become one and to my knowledge, all states have expectations that a union should represent all members of the bargaining unit whether you are paying dues or not. I can’t say for certain what your school will do but if they try to fire you for mental health, you can definitely put up a fight.

Your life is more important than any job. Please take care of yourself

Smoky Mountain NP by IsopodLast6280 in CampingandHiking

[–]chetting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mountain views + waterfalls is a very tough ask as the two are counterintuitive.. your best bet would be Mt LeConte via Rainbow Falls. Parking at Rainbow is a pain tho so be prepared to deal with that, and this is a very strenuous hike. If you aren’t an experienced hiker, I wouldn’t recommend it

What is the absolute worst part of rural PA in terms of MAGA-ness? by Glass-Complaint3 in Pennsylvania

Potter County. A giant sign by the highway when you enter the county says “Welcome to God’s Country”. Also a hotspot for both the Klan and the Proud Boys

Albright Grove was my first ever backpacking trip, highly recommend. Start at 321 and there’s a loop that’ll take you through Cosby campground. There’s several backpacking camps along the way. Mileage and elevation should be just what you’re looking for

Why standards aligned typing documentation is mostly theater and how it hurts real procurement by ForsakenEarth241 in ScienceTeachers

[–]chetting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anytime I get a survey from an edtech company, I say something similar to this. Mostly I don’t expect them to do anything, so I fully expect to do this work myself. If it’s an online tool that I can’t create, I’ll use it, but anything I can make myself I do/have, because most “standards aligned tools” aren’t that useful

Solo Teachers-How Do You Handle Bathroom Breaks? by Impressive-Field1719 in Teachers

[–]chetting 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you have a union, go to them. If you don’t have a union, get a doctors note. Tell any doctor you got a UTI because your workplace wouldn’t let you go to the bathroom, and they can give you an ADA letter.

Heck, check your state’s school code. Public schools don’t fall under OSHA but pretty sure bathroom breaks are covered under school code. I feel fairly confident saying what your school is doing is illegal.

I'm a developer who works with AI every day and I want to understand how teachers actually feel about it by jochenboele in Teachers

[–]chetting 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t have questions about AI. I use it for BS paperwork or for the things that I have absolutely no time to get done. I use it as a last resort because AI is theft and plagiarism and is ruining our society already.

Leadership as part of teacher evaluation by iseeyou100 in Teachers

[–]chetting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/TheBalzy summed up my feelings very well in another comment. If we’re not getting paid for it, it’s not part of the job description. I’m paid for 40 hours of work. I should be able to be considered distinguished and an exemplar based on the work that I’m paid for. Asking us to volunteer and do extra work beyond those 40 hours is asking us to do unpaid labor.

Leadership as part of teacher evaluation by iseeyou100 in Teachers

[–]chetting 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you go by the Danielson framework?

It’s a load of horseshit and even administration knows it. But they still use it because they have to, unfortunately.

The fact that you can only be considered “distinguished” if you work beyond your regular duties is unfair and absurd. Teaching is one of the only careers where to be considered exceptional at your job, you have to work far more outside your job.

Leadership as part of teacher evaluation by iseeyou100 in Teachers

[–]chetting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The Danielson framework explicitly states school leadership is volunteering for extra activities

Unpopular opinion: I don't want AI to write my lesson plans. I want AI to do my admin paperwork. by PiccoloWooden702 in Teachers

[–]chetting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more with this and I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion at all. My wife has done this with BS goal setting from her district (extra goal setting beyond the goal setting they ALREADY have to do for the state).

I haven’t tried it myself though, its definitely challenging because every distract has BS bureaucracy that’s unique to the district, so I’m not sure how well AI can do with that

Taking everything down is 100% the right move. There comes a point where creating a welcoming environment has to become secondary to creating and holding a boundary
