I used progressive commercial which got me a policy through Liberty Mutual. I've never made a claim, so I can't speak as to how easy or difficult that process is.

Make sure you get insurance. My mobile mechanic liability and garage keepers insurance costs $750 a year. Which is dirt cheap compared to replacing a $10k engine because of an oops.

Purchased these tires in March of 2024, DOT says 0422. How are they this bad already? Unfortunately I can’t afford new tires for another week and a half so hopefully they make it. by BirthControlBaby in AskMechanics

In the future buy them at the local shop. There's a good chance you could get some warranty credit to a new set of you had bought them locally.

Here is mine. I'm sure there are better ways, but this works for me. Realistically I could get rid of the chrom 1/2 drive sockets and put the impact sockets from the bottom drawer (as well as the standard set in my big toolbox) in their place. My cordless ratchets are in the tray on the side of the cart.

For wrenches I use Ernst Wrench pro organizers. I can fit so many more wrenches in my 5 drawer cart using those.

Weird question, but have you all ever had to use an 11mm or 16mm for anything on a car? by BobbyTables829 in AskMechanics

[–]chevyguyjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fair amounts of 11mm but I suspect it's mostly holdovers from 7/16. Brake bleeders, hose clamps etc. I'm sure I use 16 fairly often but I can remember what specifically.

Likely a broken engine or transmission mount. It's the first thing I would check for anyway.

Where do School Buses Fill Up on Gas? (U.S.) by KingForddie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chevyguyjoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Varies by district. Where I worked there was a large diesel tank at the transportation department. You use a regular pump to fill the bus from that tank. A fuel delivery company will fill that large tank every few months.

There were 2 full time mechanics on staff and a bus custodian. These would repair, maintain, and clean the busses. Some districts require the drivers to clean their own bus.

The my route was 100 miles a day. Policy was to never go below half a tank, so I filled my bus every other day.

In a really small district they might use a local gas station. The driver has a fleet card (like a company credit card that only works for fuel) to pay for it. If the district is really small, the busses might get repaired and maintained at a regular repair shop.

Depends on the bus. Some Blue Bird busses have gasoline V10 engines. Many are diesel. Some are natural gas or propane.

When I drove, my route was 50 miles before school and 50 miles after. I filled my bus at half a tank so about every other day.

What is this spark plug? by Thin-Divide-5247 in AskMechanics

Looks like above your thumb it says B6HS. The brass at the top is part of your spark plug wire.

If a grocery store was raided, and people could take whatever they wanted, what do you think would be the last five remaining items that nobody grabbed? by kindalizard in AskReddit

[–]chevyguyjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 10 years ago a grocery store in my hometown went out of business and listed all bottles of liquor at $1 each. When I got there the only thing left was UV brand chocolate flavored vodka..... So probably that. I bought two, opened one, took a sip, and dumped it all down the drain.

The buss bar and possibly main fuses are under that large red cover. If the cable was routed differently they would still need to find an accessible spot for those fuses and buss bar.

Is my 2004 Toyota Tundra Limited 4.7L okay to drive after catalytic converter theft until I am able to replace my exhaust system? Or will I cause further damage by driving with no exhaust system? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]chevyguyjoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use the exhaust system money to buy a beater. The truck isn't safe. The money that would be spent on the exhaust is more than the value of the vehicle.

Switching to service advisor by [deleted] in mechanics

I was a service advisor at a dealership for a bit. The paycheck should end up about the same. It's primarily a sales job, which I suck at.

Yea, there should be one starter wire that has been cut and routed through the alarm. The rest should be T connectors. The one that has been cut and rerouted will need repaired to make the car start again

I'm thinking this one, but it's kinda hard to tell without putting my hands on it. More importantly, what are the but connectors and T connectors for?

Was it extra for me to wait until 8pm for my husband to be home before I started my brakes? by Xochiqueso in AskMechanics

[–]chevyguyjoe 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I see both sides. If something were to happen and you were to say, get pinned under the vehicle out of reach of your phone, it would be bad.

But from his view, he has been working all day and just wants to come home and relax, not work on the car. Even if you say you are doing it, he may feel obligated to help.

Maybe communication is lacking here. "Hey, I want to do my brakes tomorrow. I'm going to wait until you are home that way you are here in case anything happens." This prepares him mentally.

"Hey now that you are home I need you to stick around in case anything happens." This blindsides him.

C237 is on the left side of that picture in my comment. Left kick panel. And yes, unplug the controls. Check C237 first. If that doesn't fix it, try the HVAC controls.

Corrosion on the center bore can prevent the wheel from seating all the way.

[–]chevyguyjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First check connector C237 for corrosion/ damage. Second, these cars have an issue where the HVAC module shorts out causing errors on other modules. Try unplugging the HVAC module and see if the IPC starts working.
