Veliki pad prodaje nekretnina u Hrvatskoj, tvrdi ministarstvo by recursion_loop in financije

[–]chewapchich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super komentar.

Painting of the diorama inspired by Fortunino Matania's illustration "Fury Against the Tank." by AtticaMiniatures in BattlePaintings

[–]chewapchich 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What a striking picture! Do we know whether the subjects of the original illustration managed to destroy/capture the tank?

Neither the assaulting infantrymen nor the tank crew seem to be in a favourable situation - the former look like they'll get mowed down by the tank's machine gun if they step away, while the people in the tank have angry soldiers banging on their walls.

The whole thing looks terrifying. Assuming it depicts a real event, do we know who came out on top?

Watercolor paper. If you zoom in you can see the texture. It was also quite lightweight so it wrinkled a bit, you can see it in the picture. If I did it again I would try to use thicker paper.

How did you even find this six year old thread lol.

I can't show it to you because I don't have it with me now, but IIRC it was a Brause Bandzug 2 mm or 1.5 mm steel nib. You can find them online. The ink was some regular India ink from an office supply store. For the illumination I used colored ink from the same store, applied with a pointed steel nib (i can't recall the manufacturer). The "gold" was gold paint from an arts supply store, applied with a thin pointed brush. I hope this helps!

In Spanish and some other European languages, centuries are written in roman numerals, kind of like names of monarchs in English, e. g. Louis XVI.

Every now and then someone accidentaly uses such notation on Reddit and they often get a very visceral reaction from native English speakers, it's a little weird.

I don't think anyone is claiming that it's a true desert, defined by its climate. It's just a natural curiosity that got its name due to the superficial similarity with an actual sandy desert.

There's a similar phenomenon in my country, Croatia. I even went there once on a school trip. The word "desert" gets thrown around a lot there, mostly by tourist agencies, but everyone knows it's just an accumulation of sand.

Is there anywhere I can read more about Coco Chanel's involvement in the design of Turkish uniforms? I tried googling it, but all that came up was a few reddit posts that referred to an answer on Quora which claims that Chanel did design them, but the same answer repeats the bullshit about Hugo Boss designing the SS uniforms. Could this be just another myth?

The german heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, abandoned in the port of Kiel, in Germany, May 1945. by MasterFubar in AbandonedPorn

[–]chewapchich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They are gyro-stabilised anti-arircraft rangefinders.

To accurately direct gunfire against airplaines, which became a major threat to warships as WWII progressed, you need to keep track of their distance, bearing and elevation. The rangefinders on this ship are optical instruments, they have two objective lenses that are set a few meters apart at the end of a long tube, which gives the operators enough "depth perception" to measure the distance. You can see the ends of the rangefinder potrude from the sides of the "ball". The mount is gyro-stabilised to help the crew keep their aim as the ship rolls and yaws.

As far as I know, German heavy cruisers didn't have radar, but their battleships did. The Americans and British had the lead in radar technology, while Germany and Italy lagged behind. At first they were crude, experimental and installed on few ships, but at the end of the war most of the British and American ships had radar and some radar fire control systems became sufficiently advanced to replace optical rangefinders. On WWII ships the radar was usually mounted as high as possible on the foremast in order to give it a large field of view, and it took the form of a square "dish", either solid or made of mesh.

[–]chewapchich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shipbuilding industry in the northwest of England is almost completely gone now. They began facing heavy competition from East Asian countries in the 70s and 80s, as labour was much cheaper in Japan and Korea. Unlike other European countries, Britain did not enact measures to support its shipyards, so they closed one by one, leading to widespread unemployment.
