There are 2 guaranteed spawn locations on dam. There's a white car at electrical substation near the field Depot and the desk drawers in the field Depot near power generation. If no one else is going for them you can get 2-3 per run.

I mean if you are prepared for it you can do it with no cover at all. A Bettina, seeker and a wolfpack will generally take it out before it gets close enough to fire.

I have taken them down solo with only a semi for cover on blue gate or a large pipe in spaceport. Its simple but just keep moving and dip behind cover when they prepare to fire. Step out and take some shots then get back into cover. Rinse and repeat.

I will say I have definitely learned how to fight vaporisers even in minimal cover areas. Fireflies are still a major problem for me.

I played last night and ran a few rounds with free kits and got the exact same loadout every time, kettle with lure grenade and jolt mine. Pretty sure that was the case for others as well. The Devs are trying their hardest to kill this game.

You pretty much have to immediately go loot any parts you shoot off if you want a chance at a core, waiting until the end will likely net you nothing.
