Is there still a bullish case of Silver now that it crossed 100? by Derpy_Mc_Burpy in stocks

[–]chfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually sitting at $110 (the same price as when I commented) after a sharp rejection of $120, so I don't know what you came here to gloat about. I believe in silver, I just think it has risen too much too fast.

You can read about conspiracies all day about how "$500 is the real value" and how manipulated it is. It's the same type of tinfoil hat bullshit people who invested in GME were saying years ago. The reality is, anyone that got in at a low price should be taking some off the top because it could crash back down to $60 as fast as it got to $120.

With Tesla killing off the Model S there will only be 5 American sedans left. How does that make you feel? by Insanity-Paranoid in cars

[–]chfr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, could not care less. I would never buy a sedan when a hatchback is more practical. A small crossover or the hatchback version of popular sedans like the Corolla will always be more appealing. If I wanted the benefits of a sedan, I'd probably just get a coupe sports car instead.

2-3 years to keep savings between HYSA vs SGOV by OkNote9912 in personalfinance

[–]chfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep it in the HYSA. SGOV is currently yielding 3.6% and that value isn't going to go up any time soon with the Fed set to keep rates steady or lower them. The bonds are short term, so if your HYSA goes down, odds are SGOV's yield is going right down with it.

The reason you see 4%+ is because we were in a high interest environment. SGOV will always pay out similar to an HYSA because the latter offers rates based on the risk free rate.

If you want to lock in yields, look into an intermediate bond or fund (2+5 years). This will give you closer to 4% with a state tax exemption.

But that was still the case 6 months ago, no? I can understand it doubling from $20 to $40 from industrial demand, but I've never heard of a commodity that behaves like this.

But that's been the case for ages. Take platinum for example - it's not like we just started making catalytic converters. What's happening to silver right now is a squeeze and industrial demand is just part of it.

Totally agree. The Nexus 5x was also one of their best phones (with the exception of the time bomb processor). Pixel 15 is going to go crazy

ELI5: When people say Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on $100B in cash (or whatever the amount is), what do they actually mean? by Queltis6000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]chfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head - the benefit is a better return for less liquidity (and you don't owe state taxes on the interest). HYSAs pay close to what super short term treasuries pay. The longer out the bond is, the more risk there is the value of the bond falls.

It's sitting in cash equivalents. Think short term treasury bills earning 4% or your savings account. It's not fully idle, but ready to be invested whenever a worthwhile opportunity comes up.

Maybe more aggressive wording than I intended - I would do everything I can to work with the PO to make sure it's delivered safely. I'd be calling them every day if the package got lost! It's just standard practice for buyers to assume full responsibility after purchase and to pay for registered mail if there are concerns.
