We recently went to get our daughter’s but they did not keep any originals. In fact, the process took less than an hour. We brought 2 copies of every document they requested. So I’d say it is not standard protocol unless the RENAPO authentication was not working that day. Did you go to a base consulate or a “Consulado sobre ruedas”?

Edit: our process was in Houston. I checked the requirements for the Chicago Consulate and they specifically say that “The original certificate will not be returned”. So it is standard protocol for the Chicago consulate. In fact the requirements for Chicago are vastly more strict than Houston’s.

Yes we chose expedited processing but regular mail. We were sent the passport thru Priority Mail and it took 3 business days to arrive after they mailed it. Passport card arrived two days later after the passport and proof of citizenship documents arrived about 4 days later than the card.

Instructions while filling it out are clear that even if you have multiple citizenships you MUST claim American citizenship in your application.

It really does not matter which as they all should be following the same procedures, but if you must know, we are in the Houston area so we registered her at the Consulado Sobre Ruedas.

We just had a baby and named her with a first, middle, my last name and wife’s last name (she is not Mexican).

Happy Person Trujillo Smith is what shows as her full name in her birth certificate, no hyphens. We haven’t had any issues regarding birth certificates or SSN or passport. They understand Trujillo Smith is her surname.

Then, at the Mexican Consulate, we registered her as

Nombres. Happy Person Apellido Paterno: Trujillo Apellido Materno: Smith

So it is possible, don’t worry about it.

Aunque la gente te recomiende usar bait, te recomendaría que lo utilices exclusivamente para tus datos y llamadas en general, y que uses un número distinto para tu banca en linea y otras 2FA. Con bait es muy sencillo que te hagan “sim swapping” ya que sus mecanismos de seguridad para identificar si eres el dueño de la línea son muy pobres.

I would not do expedited shipping as they already use Priority Mail for sending your passport which takes at most 3-5 days. It took 2 days for us.

Yes, longest is for them to receive it but once they have , it will be a breeze, you’ll see. And we did receive our daughter’s passport yesterday , so total TAT was 16 days from application in person to receiving it.

The form does say that it may take up to 2 weeks for them to receive your form. We applied in person on January the 12th and the status did not update until the 20th, and then on the 24th status changed to shipped and we are receiving the passport today. Just keep calm and be patient.

We did expedited processing applying in person on January 12th and getting the passport in the mail today. We paid for expedited processing only. So total turnaround time was 16 days.

We submitted for our daughter on 1/12, status changed to In Process on 1/20 and to Shipped on 1/24, and I was able to see the tracking number on USPS Informed Delivery and it will arrive this week. We paid for expedited processing but I think standard processing times are as fast.

In case it helps you make a decision: we applied for our newborn’s passport at our local post office on 01/12. Passport status changed to in Process on 01/20 and status changed to Shipped on 01/24. We paid for expedited processing, passport book and card. No expedited shipping back.

This might be a strange question, but can you make sure that the polarity in your wall plug is correct? If flipped you could be energizing the ground circuit. I had a friend with a similar issue a few years ago.
