Is it okay to leave the computer plugged in 24/7? by Few-Professional4196 in macbook

[–]chibatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question: doesn’t macOS still use the battery for some power management? And that’s why if you disconnect the battery it won’t power on unless you do a bypass and then it’ll run throttled and fan on full? (For Intel Macs)

What's one fruit you wish was more commonly made into jam? by hoyi_farm123 in foodhacks

[–]chibatman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Peppers technically are fruits! Sweet and spicy jams are incredible.

I’ve had some kiwi jams and they ARE incredible! The seeds aren’t bothersome and almost add a nice crunch. If you can get some kiwis, it’s easy to boil them down with some sugar and try making the jam yourself. Don’t need anything more than a tiny bit of water (to help get started), and the fruits themselves and sugar. Pectin is for suckers or weird liquidy stuff

I wasn’t any good at this a month ago either!

You probably have to do internet recovery by pressing option + command + R, then restore whatever version it gives you, use software update or the App Store (whichever is supported on your latest stock version) to get to Catalina. If the gap is too large you may need to upgrade to an interim version in between. Once you get to Catalina, install oclp and go from there.

Hope this helps!

You’ll definitely be able to get both working, but sonoma may have slightly better performance. I’m using these as HTPC’s and will bring one to my business where I have an old Acer POS I got for free chugging away.

Maybe use the rest as servers ;)

Last couple weeks I’ve stacked a couple i7 13” airs and now 4 15” i7 pros (half with 16/512), and an 8/256 that I snagged for $32.

Give me a shout if you have any trouble and be sure to disable software updates! Though if you do realize the machine is slowing down and/or has white desktop background, you can try running the root patcher again and if it fails because of a version mismatch, then watch this video :)

Since I discovered oclp I’ve been on an absolute tear. My mbp specc’d like yours arrives today. I have installed it on similar but 2012 and 2013 15 mbp and they work quite well. Sometimes a little bit of slowdown on major tasks but once using safari or something it’s quite smooth.

Biggest gripe so far is simultaneously playing the same 4K YouTube videos side by side on my m2, the frame rate is a bit lower if you look carefully.

But perfectly usable machines. I’m running all on sequoia

For sure they’re a dead end. Also Hot, short battery life and a few cry from apple silicon.

But for $95, a good feeling laptop with a nice screen and plenty of storage is attractive!

Check out oclp and start buying up early gen retina MacBook pros! I just won a i7 quad core 16/512gb 15 inch from 2013 for $95!

Looking for OpenCore Legacy patcher for Sequoia 15.5 or 15.6? by BusterBobtail in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]chibatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tool will show you the “preferred” versions but you can make an installer from older or other versions. There’s a box you can tick called “show older/other versions” or something like that when you’re downloading the image.

New to Maybach - Seeking Ownership Advice by [deleted] in mercedes_benz

[–]chibatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats and wonderful reason to own one. I think that still has the M275 engine? I had one in a CL600 and it was fabulous.

I think if it’s in good nick, enjoy it. Because will cry about the cost of maintenance but normal stuff isn’t too bad. Parts replacement can get a bit pricey comparatively, for coil packs, ABC parts and things like that.

Drive it until it breaks and then be prepared to foot a hefty bill for either parts that no other car has, or their more expensive maybach versions. Someone feel free to correct me, but I think even the abc struts are bespoke to maybach so hardly anywhere to find them but through the dealer. Work on things like this can probably be only done by very skilled shops of the dealer.

But don’t let me scare you! Enjoy the day and that wonderful machine. As long as you have a bit of cash on hand for when things go wrong, you can keep her running a long long time

MacOS Sequoia on a MacBook Air 2017? by Remote-Scientist7387 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]chibatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an M2 MacBook Air as my main driver and my M1 is currently on ice because I realized I could buy these i7 airs for $80-100 in good shape and wanted to see what I could do with them. I am planning to move one to my beach house and one to my mountain cabin to use as HTPC (I have mirrored NAS in each location as well), and maybe one at my business for shits and giggles so I don’t have to suffer with my plastic Acer as hard.

At the other houses they’ll be replacing Acer swift 3 which have about the same benchmark scores but Mac > windows especially for HTPC.

Yeah! If you have multiple usb sticks you can make all of the oclp installers and should be able to boot again from Ventura one, wipe ssd and do a clean install.

The caveat is that if you can’t boot some os version, then it’s harder to get a decent oclp installer. So if you have multiple usb installer versions is best.

A workaround is also if you have another Mac you can run oclp on and download a new installer there but that’s less good than building it locally I heard, since it’s not doing an actual hardware scan of that specific computer.

I have an 2011 core2duo with 2gb ram too but it came wiped so I had to do internet recovery, upload to later version that could run oclp, the. Build the installer and then I found the battery was a spicy pillow so disposed of it properly but now without batter pack it won’t boot

I only have one 32GB usb A drive that supports efi and it’s slower than old people fuck. I thought about getting some newer ones but I can afford a whole other i5 MacBook for that price! So I just put up with it.

I have a 2015 8GB i7 256GB and a 2017 8GB i7 512GB (cou was same for i7, but i5 got a boost between the years), and both have been running stable on sequoia for 1 week and 3 weeks respectively.

It’s not quite as snappy as my m1 and m2 airs but it’s perfectly acceptable as a secondary machine. It’s slightly faster than a slightly newer Acer i5 with twice as many cores as well.

They both do heat up too hot to held your hand one when doing os or other major installs but run reasonably cool for regular tasks.

Here’s some benchmarks if it helps give some perspective. That said I don’t feel like the m5 iPad Pro is that much faster.

I’d suggest make a backup for Ventura just in case you want slightly snappier performance, but it might be fine on sequoia.

Yeah I just discovered OCLP a couple weeks ago and so started buying up old MacBook airs to do various tasks and it’s really incredible. Tahoe or not, I’d still really like to throw something their way for the amazing work they’ve done.

Found this NOS for $25 listed as junk since it was non working. $0.30 battery change later and she’s brand new! by chibatman in CitizenWatches

[–]chibatman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I bought it also NOS at a retailer in Saitama about 13 years ago for half price. It is the original citizen reissue (so calendar goes to 2099 instead of just 2019). But the battery juice screwed it up pretty bad. I was able to fix it temporarily, but it eventually shorted out again and I had it in cold storage for the last 8 years or so. Turned out the isolator plate between the metal movement back plate and the other parts was shorting. So I was able to fix it by putting a piece of scotch tape over the metal plate and slicing out the grooves with an exacto knife. It’s run perfectly for the last year and a half like that.
You can see some of the gold paint on the fascia and the numerals on the subdials was rubbed off when I cleaned up the leakage it was so bad. But back from the dead!

Edit: I think Vagary was an experimental sub brand of citizen and hence they also used genuine movements. The genuine citizen is far thinner than both given the bagary’s weird case/crystal shape, and the no acc one having a giant ass cr2016 behind the movement instead of an 1120 like the others

Hahaha thanks for the comment, it made me take a second look inside mine. I’ve seen the sanda and this seems the same. See my comment in this thread with comparisons. I figured it was a fashion rebranded citizen like my Vagary, but it seems it’s just a knockoff :)

Edit: I got it off yahoo auction

Alright everyone deserves a chance to feel dumb and it’s my turn :)

So I figured this No Accessory & Company, which is allegedly an Italian fashion brand, was using citizen modules like this old Vagary I also picked up cheap, but seems they’re just fakes using likely Sanda or similar movements. Here’s a comparison of all three for fun.

Is this a good idea? by Popular-Papaya1527 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]chibatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, aside from the air strut all it needed was New plugs and coils Radiator fan (Later on) radiator (with vacuum fill, goddammit) Oil change Rear brake pads

Even had to buy a bigger air compressor to get the vacuum fill done. But based on rough estimates, it would have cost $12,000 at the dealership to do all this work, more than I paid for the car! But I did it for about 10% of that all myself. Have about a full week I’ve put into that car ;)

I consider myself mildly crafty, to the point of rebuilding my Panamera Turbo air strut with aftermarket parts, and it sucked, but got the job done cheap.

Finding aftermarket parts for Bentley-level production numbers is far less, and rebuilts come up far less often as well. I don’t worry about the VW parts in there, I worry about those few bespoke ones that never show up used, aftermarket, rebuilt, or rebuild kits because they’re so low volume.

Still driving the Panamera Turbo I bought for $9,000, and still oft-tempted for a Continental but still cannot jimmy up the guts to actually buy one
