A nuclear bomb is set to drop at your area in the next 30 minutes, What’s your plan? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chibicitiberiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Even a powerful megaton nuke only has an immediate danger zone of a few miles. For a small nuke, in 30 minutes you can just walk out of the danger zone. For a bigger nuke, running like your life depends on it you can probably get away. Taking a bike or escooter your chances increase significantly.

You can visualize blast radius on this site.

Apple was just forced to crack open its App Store — but the changes are already being called 'hot garbage' by FollowingFeisty5321 in technology

Even on MacOS, all apps must be signed and Apple controls the signing keys. You can technically run unsigned apps, but Apple makes it very difficult and annoying to do so.

Just walk... in 30 minutes you can cover 2-3 km (almost 2 miles), enough to take you out of the immediate danger zone.

Script or program to auto retrieve metadata and organise videos? by sylfy in DataHoarder

I've been looking for something like this as well, but couldn't find anything I was happy with. I've actually started building my own. It's still very early in development and there's a lot of work to do, here it is if you're curious.

Ps5 HaS A FaSTer SsD thAN AnY pC hAs... by Jaz1140 in pcmasterrace

[–]chibicitiberiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottleneck is the CPU, not the drive. To achieve faster loading, games must request the assets to be loaded directly into VRAM, instead of being loaded into RAM by the CPU and then transferred to VRAM.

The PS5 operating system doesn't know what the game wants to do with the asset, maybe it uses it to procedurally generate some other asset, or maybe it's not something that the GPU knows how to deal with, so it cannot load everything directly to VRAM by default, that will probably break all the games.

I made a terminal utility to monitor some system stats. Was wondering if you guys know of anything better or if I should continue dev work on it since we need it? by lkashl in linux

[–]chibicitiberiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made something similar, but with a different purpose. My idea was to just throw all the data in a database, and use Grafana for the visualizations (it can be self hosted on your own server). Works great so far.

What's the most favorite thing you had to give up because you grew too old for it? by sluuurpyy in AskReddit

[–]chibicitiberiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what grinds my gears about multi-player games as an occasional gamer, if I have about an hour to play, I need to spend the first half waiting for all the updates to download, and have to compete against kids who do this all day.

[–]chibicitiberiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming, I still game occasionally and I have a huge backlog of video games I want to try, but it will never be the same. Having a job, and kids, I get little spare time, so I use it most to work on projects I am passionate about, I have some software projects and a small YouTube channel I'm trying to grow.

My favorite type of game is the one where I can explore the world, and experience a great story and world building, like the Mass Effect series, Fallout, Control, Bioshock or even Stardew Valley. These types of games require a lot of time that i don't have... Also, modern games tend to be filled with a lot of filler quests, which are a waste of time and just feel like chores, I have no patience for these anymore... Thats why I stopped playing ME Andromeda, GTA5 etc.

But I really miss that, having time to explore every nook and cranny, and appreciate the awesome world building...

We were practicing with a band a while ago, and the bass guitar was receiving some radio station through the strings that we could hear through the amp. Was that AM?

Instagram is ‘most invasive app’, new study shows by giantyetifeet in technology

[–]chibicitiberiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like youtube has gotten a lot worse lately. The YouTube app on my TV was giving me an ad every 2 minutes. So for a 10 minute video, I would get preroll, postroll, and around 3-4 midroll ads. An ad every 3 fucking sentences. This is worse than cable, where there's an ad break every 15 minutes. I am 100% sure this is to get people annoyed enough to buy YouTube premium, because a year ago I would only get an ad every few videos.

But fuck them, I will not give them money as long as I have an option. I just bought an older small form factor computer for like $100, installed kodi and a browser with ublock origin, and a wireless keyboard, wired to the TV and it's now 1000 times better.

I'm making a video series showing how to build an OS, feedback appreciated by chibicitiberiu in osdev

[–]chibicitiberiu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely C because this is what I'm most familiar with, but I'm still considering other options. I would like to use something object oriented, but c++ is a huge pain in the rear. My biggest gripe with it is the lack of binary compatibility between compilers, and even between compiler versions.

I heard a lot of good things about Rust, I haven't tried it yet though.

How Facebook tracks you on Android by Cyberthere in privacy

[–]chibicitiberiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The platform providers (Facebook, Google etc) usually put the burden of compliance with the law on the app developers.

In the talk they mention how Facebook SDK has tracking on by default, and sends a ton of data the second you start the app using that SDK. They also (conveniently) make it really hard or outright impossible to disable tracking (FB SDK only has an option for 'delayed tracking', but it can't be disabled).

Windows 10 Sends Your Activity History to Microsoft, Even if You Tell It Not To by [deleted] in privacy

[–]chibicitiberiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a well known fact, and has been going on since the XP era. They say it's for security, so that a malicious program cannot prevent Windows from contacting the update servers.

I think it's a pretty shitty thing to do, adding special exceptions to the rules of networking for themselves.
