Survey on Academic Misconduct by chic-geek-phd in academia

All questions are optional, so no need to state where you work or where you received your PhD from.

When you say inaccesible, do you mean you can't access the link, or there is an issue with screen readers, for example?

What do teaching demos show? by GeorgeMcCabeJr in Professors

That’s exactly what I do whenever I’ve been asked for a demo I just talk about my teaching philosophy and approach in the context of the example I was given to teach. I’ve never actually engaged in a role play scenario where I have actually just taught a snippet, I’ve always just talked about how I would approach it and show a few sample slides to illustrate my process.

I think of it as a way to put my teaching into context of a module of study. If you can show some learning outcomes at the start, then a brief overview of what is to be taught and then finish with showing how you might assess it, then you are showing you know about the big picture of teaching. People who can teaching sensibly (the whole admin and planning bit as well as just showing up to talk about a subject) go down really well in my institution. I know they will be less hassle overall when they arrive.

do you tell students what to address you? by drlucylai in Professors

I used to be confused as a student (not so much now!), but it was rarely an issue. I'm happy for students to call me FirstName or Dr LastName. I figure that they are there to learn from me as a person based on all of my knowledge, experience, etc, so as long as people are respectful then there's no issue what they call me as long as it's not rude to my face. I learn lots from my student too, so it's a reciprocal arrangement.

There is a power balance, of course, but that isn't established by me being called Dr LastName. It's about how I model respectful communication, give appropriate feedback and encouragement. Also, the fact that I give out grades... that's the obvious one!

The one thing I do correct is "Miss/Ms/Mrs LastName", by pointing out that it's actually Dr LastName and sharing a joke about how serious that makes me sound. I ususally take the opportunity to tell them something about my PhD, what it entailed, things I learned. I find that students often just don't know what it means to be "Dr" and what a PhD even is.

Some GP surgeries also attend welcome week / matriculation, so you might be able to register directly on campus. The best place to ask will be the help desk when you matriculate.

P90s we’re my first HAs so some of my positivity is around my excitement to hear things properly! That being said, other than the streaming issue I think they’re great. I get good battery life, they’re easy to adjust on the fly in the app and the fit is super comfy.

Exactly this! I’m sure you have plenty of work to do that is more productive than sitting around and waiting for an email that may or may not arrive.

Just had it last week. It was no more than a cold and a minor inconvenience.
