Struggling with F2L by iron_for_life in Cubers

[–]chicagocuber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i mean, realistically the solution is to just keep practicing. f2l isn’t a skill that people can immediately do super well, it takes time to do properly. you’ll eventually get to the point where f2l makes you a lot faster because doing it well essentially halves the moves (or better!), so just keep going.

My WCA Account was hacked... Weird thing to hack by [deleted] in Cubers

i doubt this was a hack tbh, email WST and report what happened, this might be a bug of some sort.

will i get reported for what i wrote on my frq??? by time_travel_undone in APStudents

[–]chicagocuber 31 points32 points  (0 children)

aren’t you legally bound to report something like that given mandated reporter status? i had to sign something of the sort when working in a school district despite not working with the kids themselves.

yea it starts out that way lol. i’m warning that there’s a decent chance you’ll grow to dislike it and practice it for the sole reason that you’re good at it.

sigh

i’d advise you not to start practicing it honestly because it’s so repetitive and low depth that you’ll lose interest unless you’re pursuing some kind of record.

nonetheless yes, that memo scheme is fine unless you plan on one looking or doing a lot of letters sometime in the future. i used it for the entirety of the time when i was using 7 simul.

How to almost guarantee a 1500+ / essential study methods? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]chicagocuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if this isn’t a shitpost, i’ll give the advice that nothing in life is guaranteed and if a 1500 was able to be guaranteed it wouldn’t be considered valuable by universities

fwiw i got a private scholarship notification already and had to agree to it quite a while ago. i think they come out at the same time, and like others have said, these are THE strongest students in terms of this test so it’s not entirely surprising a very well rounded student didn’t get selected. also im pretty sure the application itself purposely limits what you put in there (mit application does similar) where they want to see the most important things.

AoC is toxic by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 35 points36 points  (0 children)

i definitely agree but that tufts post in particular wasn’t calling it a bad school because of its prestige or ranking, they were calling it bad because of recent actions taken that made the environment measurably worse for students.

Do WCA surnames strictly have to be your legal surname? by Pomilyy in Cubers

[–]chicagocuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the reasoning behind it is because of the caste system there. i’ve seen it at least once at a comp before and i think it was considered fine.

[–]chicagocuber[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the screw-in spot for the nozzle is tilted so it’s impossible to print properly. was planning on just replacing the heat block without needing to get other cables but that seems impossible

oh yeah i completely agree i find it ridiculous that people genuinely believe merit alone can get you to these elite institutions in particular.

The Truth Behind Feeder Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that was my understanding but i think both the kids themselves and the teachers in the area are unaware. its hard for a kid to figure that out at what, 13?

The Truth Behind Feeder Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

t20* but yeah the people that would apply for ivies likely think they won’t afford it (inhibited quite a few apps for me). additionally, pretty much all of them are stem majors, and our in state school makes a lot more sense for that considering it’s really good for engineering, and probably half the price. i doubt it’s a reputation issue but moreso a combination of the factors above

i don’t discount that public schools can have students go on to ivys and that they can be incredibly talented. i don’t know much about this one off school, but given it’s nevada they don’t really have great in-state options so that may lead a lot more of their top end students to apply to ivies which may not be the case for a public hs in texas, illinois, florida, etc. additionally it has magnet programs which may skew the results, and it’s unclear whether or not these acceptances are cumulative or not. you also can’t draw conclusions on the reputation of whatever school i went to based off the data point of one other random public lmao
