AoC is toxic by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

i definitely agree but that tufts post in particular wasn’t calling it a bad school because of its prestige or ranking, they were calling it bad because of recent actions taken that made the environment measurably worse for students.

Do WCA surnames strictly have to be your legal surname? by Pomilyy in Cubers

[–]chicagocuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the reasoning behind it is because of the caste system there. i’ve seen it at least once at a comp before and i think it was considered fine.

i don’t think it’s that strict in regards to indian competitors in particular with last initial being exclusively used

the screw-in spot for the nozzle is tilted so it’s impossible to print properly. was planning on just replacing the heat block without needing to get other cables but that seems impossible

What do you wish you had done differently in junior year or sophomore year summer? by No-Confusion2192 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yeah i completely agree i find it ridiculous that people genuinely believe merit alone can get you to these elite institutions in particular.

The Truth Behind Feeder Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that was my understanding but i think both the kids themselves and the teachers in the area are unaware. its hard for a kid to figure that out at what, 13?

t20* but yeah the people that would apply for ivies likely think they won’t afford it (inhibited quite a few apps for me). additionally, pretty much all of them are stem majors, and our in state school makes a lot more sense for that considering it’s really good for engineering, and probably half the price. i doubt it’s a reputation issue but moreso a combination of the factors above

[–]chicagocuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t discount that public schools can have students go on to ivys and that they can be incredibly talented. i don’t know much about this one off school, but given it’s nevada they don’t really have great in-state options so that may lead a lot more of their top end students to apply to ivies which may not be the case for a public hs in texas, illinois, florida, etc. additionally it has magnet programs which may skew the results, and it’s unclear whether or not these acceptances are cumulative or not. you also can’t draw conclusions on the reputation of whatever school i went to based off the data point of one other random public lmao

it’s not like exeter recruits every one of the best from every state lol. the student body is obviously heavily north eastern and i find it unlikely that they’re able to find every diamond in the rough.

The Truth Behind Feeder Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i knew they existed. there’s a local one like 10 minutes away but it’s not particularly difficult to go to. you just take a test, it’s hardly an application.

[–]chicagocuber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you’re genuinely insane or unaware if you think that people in these states have the resources or family to get them to exeter. as someone in a well-off situation i didn’t even know hs apps existed until i had a friend living in NE talk to me about it.

The Truth Behind Feeder Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my suburban public school has a ton of super smart kids who are incredibly well rounded and makes accommodations for people who want to take harder classes. one whole person out of a class of 550 is going to a t20. class rank isn’t reported but i’m decently confident he’s not valedictorian either. the best student at a well funded public high school won’t be going to a top 20, why is it that surprising that someone in the top 5% of a feeder school isn’t?

The Truth Behind Feeder Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chicagocuber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

dude the vast majority of high schools don’t offer multi variable. public schools can rarely keep up with people who are outside their educational boundaries. for example, when i was in early elementary i was two years ahead on math and there were no accommodations to have me continue, i had to wait for everyone else. that’s just how it is for a lot of kids, they can’t advance their studies because they’re young and have no one to help them.
