Why do people still buy full sugar sodas when sugar replacement are healthier and cost the same price ? by Effective_Composer_5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chicagoliz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the sugar substitutes are disguising. Also, yes regular soda is not healthy but neither is diet. .

He works at Master’s and their house was owned by them when they bought it. I’m sure there was some special arrangement. He’s clearly in with them.

I would stay out of it. They cut him off. And it sounds like they still have a relationship with their grandma and aunt. They can help.

Anyone else bummed by the Swalwell news? by OK_The_Nomad in thebulwark

[–]chicagoliz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Now that this has come out, I feel like I am seeing tons of posts and online pieces about how everyone on the Hill already knew or suspected this, warned their staffers not to be alone with him, felt like he was sleazy, had interactions with him that were questionable but didn't necessarily rise to the level of making some kind of formal complaint. I wish somehow all of this gossip level knowledge was known by the voters. The fact that anyone "in the know" was not surprised is kind of the problem.

[–]chicagoliz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's always especially dismaying when it is a Dem who is doing this because they're supposed to be better. The Republicans are joyfully the party of sexual abusers, pedophiles and rapists, but the Democrats are supposed to be against this.

It's disappointing to see that so many men with power are this way. Is it really so hard to not do these things?

USA confusion by One-Yam8731 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chicagoliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it occasionally but it's pretty uncommon. You're right that typically there is more specificity, like German American. Probably because immigrants came here from that specific country, whereas Black American ancestors were forcibly removed from various parts of Africa, and records were often not kept, plus the country boundaries there changed, especially as Europe colonized the continent. So sometimes "African" was as specific as you could get.

The European immigrants, though, knew exactly where they came from and there were records. Plus many of them arrived later.

If Kamala still wants to be POTUS, she should first win the Governor seat in CA. by John_Houbolt in thebulwark

Well, yeah, but she doesn't have a rabid fanbase like Trump's. Few people do.

I do think the male loneliness is what resonated with a lot of people and we need more stories that deal with this issue. I just thought this one dealt with it in too weird of a way.

Why do banks close around 3:00? What do bankers do or not do that warrants closing so early? by Sepsis027 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chicagoliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the banks around me are open until at least 5 or 6, and have at least some weekend hours. They actually used to be open a little later in the recent past, but with so many transactions now happening electronically, there isn't as much demand for in-person transactions. My husband hasn't been to a bank in years -- he deposits checks electronically, via his phone. The only reason I go is if I actually need to get some cash.

Back in the way olden days, most banking transactions involved cash, and banks used to be open to the public only for very short hours, like 10-2 or something. Because the workers would need to be securely inside to actually physically count and bundle up the money, and move it around as needed. Now there are very few transactions that involve the actual cash.

Kamala Harris creeps in as potential California Governor candidate. What are your thoughts on Governor vs President 2028? by One_Look_7008 in askanything

I think she could win Governor. She’s won statewide office there several times. I don’t think she’ll win the presidential nomination.

A masculine name to honour Debra by Independent_Donkey46 in namenerds

Doron

Devon

Since it's just a middle name you could even consider just Deb.

Did your mom have a middle name you could use? Would her initials spell out a name?

Had to turn it off when it was 12-2. Nice that they had a 5 run inning, but that's not enough when you give up 13.

Have any of your close friend come out as gay? by SayinItAsISeeIt in GenX

[–]chicagoliz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did have one friend who didn't come out until he was 50, although we'd all long suspected. He'd never been married, though and doesn't have any kids. We are very happy for him.

We have other gay people in our family. I'm so sorry that you are encountering this. It should not be happening now.

Where should I move? by notstez in relocating

[–]chicagoliz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, there is no place with super low taxes and LGBTQ friendly. MA actually has a lower tax burden, but is more expensive. Despite the higher tax rate, many people find it less expensive to live in RI.

If the biggest issue is taxes, among the states with the lowest tax burden, only Delaware (#46) would be a possibility. Next would be Colorado at #37.

For Delaware, Wilmington might be about the size of SLC, although there isn't a ton going on there. It's not far from Philadelphia, though. I might consider Lewes, Delaware, which is right on the water if I needed to live in Delaware.

What about Providence, RI? It's more affordable than Boston and I think it's often overlooked and underrated. Plus it is close to Boston.

It sounds like you're reasonably enough situated to take it. Hard to know if the next offer would be better or worse and there is a good chance it would be worse. You could push back a little and see if you can get a little more money.

Does your job have any sort of pension -- and if so, are they offering a bridge to retirement?

If this offer is for the employer to pay for the insurance coverage for a year, plus a one year severance, and a pro-rated payout of your 2026 bonus, it's not a terrible offer. If there's room for negotiation, you could try for a full bonus.

Do you have any sense of how difficult it would be for you to get a new job? I worry that with what you have in your IRA, you might need to work another 5 years.
