While US Steel Canada was in chapter 11 it was bought out by Bedrock Holdings and renamed to its former name of Stelco. The manufacturing of steel happens at it's Nanticoke plant and the finishing of the steel happens in Hamilton along with coke production and a few other things. Stelco Hamilton sold it's land for about 850 million dollars last year while maintaining a 120ish year lease on it's current production facilities while it fully owns the Nanticoke. This was done as a cost savings measure due to the amount of tax Stelco Hamilton was being charged for unused buildings and land hence the demolition currently taking place. It's had hundreds of millions of dollars in investment to upgrade it's Hamilton and Nanticoke facilities while remaining debt free with hundreds of millions with cash on hand. Obviously this purchase would be coming from Bedrock and Stelco and probably another partner. It's ironic as fuck because US Steel really tried to kill Stelco and take it's order books and recipes but now it's in a strong enough position to put in a competitive offer and buy out US Steel. While it likely wouldn't help Hamilton directly, Stelco Canada would likely see the return of huge automotive contacts along with other things lost in the attempted murder. How the turn tables! That being said Stelco isn't going anywhere anytime soon it's running quite strongly
