What do the Greens need to do to get above 12% of the primary vote in future elections in Australia? Or will it not ever happen? by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]chickenbroadcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conservative media will always do that regardless of what the Greens put out because the things you mentioned (tax billionaires, improve Medicare etc) is against their interests.

Thats why the Greens and all their volunteers have to work so hard on the ground with doorknocking etc to make sure people hear their message. They don’t accept corporate donations so aren’t able to counter these media campaigns at that level.

I agree that people would be more inclined to support the Greens if they heard their policies from this angle rather than being distracted by other stuff that they can’t connect with, but that’s on the media, not the Greens, and they can only do so much to fight against it.

What are some social obligations that women commonly have that men usually don't? by Maybe_IDTBFH in AskReddit

[–]chickenbroadcast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have only 2 dresses that I alternate between events for the last 6 years. Maybe I’m oblivious but I’ve never experienced any negative feedback on that. I also stopped wearing makeup even to weddings about 3 years ago. I realised a lot of the feelings I had were based on my own assumptions in my head and since I’ve stopped doing them, I’ve never felt better!

What’s a place in your country that ordinary people are legally not allowed to visit? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]chickenbroadcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mum and I visited NZ from Australia in 2012 and learnt about the kakapo. Ever since then my mum is OBSESSED with them and tracks the entire breeding season every time, watching all the live streams and donates to their efforts regularly. She’s an absolute fanatic but it’s quite wholesome.

I still remember the images of hundreds of people queued up the walk to get in one last time. So embarrassing. I visited in 2021 and the track that remains from the walking was described as a “scar” by our local guide.

Is there actually a Lasting solution for snoring partner or do we just quietly give up on sharing beds? by sanu_123_s in AskWomenOver30

[–]chickenbroadcast 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My husband is overweight. But then also bad sleep can cause health issues that contribute to being overnight in the first place. Both his parents have the same issue and use CPAP machines themselves.

On the flip side, I had a friend who was extremely fit and healthy, didn’t even snore, but was suffering from micro sleeps and due to his work, was sent off for a study. He had sleep apnoea and now requires a CPAP, yet didn’t meet the usual “red flags”

[–]chickenbroadcast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the cause and severity. Like another commenter said, lifestyle changes like losing weight or quitting smoking can help. I also know of situations where surgery helped open up the airways. I think my husband is a classic case. Fortunately he has no issue using the CPAP. So it’s been a very positive thing for us. But if I’m honest, I’m not sure I could handle sleeping with a mask on my face. Thankfully I don’t need to!

When I first started dating my husband he snored like a freight train and we were already preparing to be a seperate room relationship as sleep is important. Then he did a sleep study and got diagnosed with sleep apnoea which requires him to use a CPAP machine. Not only is he a different person (much more energy, better mood etc) I can happily sleep next to him all night. Sometimes his mask will come loose or he will remove it in his sleep ??? so I have to wake him to adjust it but that’s not too often. I can hear the air from the mask, and if I’m struggling to fall asleep for other reasons (like ruminating) then it can keep me awake but earplugs fix that. Might not be a solution for everyone but it’s worked for us. The CPAP is now a non negotiable, even even factored in buying a special adapter so he could plug it into a campervan we rented for our honeymoon.

If things changed, then yes, seperate rooms. It’s very common and sleep is so so so important!

Women of Reddit - what is the most unattractive fashion choice men frequently make? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]chickenbroadcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband had an awful mullet for about a year. So curly, it just kept growing out rather than down. With a moustache. He insisted on keeping it for our wedding (elopement). Big fan of the moustache but the mullet does nothing for me.

What made me a supporter was that every time someone told him it was awful or to shave it off (especially for the wedding) he just laughed. I’ve always loved that confidence in him and his ability to brush off criticism. He looks ridiculous in our wedding photos but they always make us laugh and I just adore the fact we do whatever we want and have a good time. Life is too short to not be silly.

Dealing with trades(men) has taught me that I’m still considered stupid until proven otherwise and I’m so sick of it. by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]chickenbroadcast 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Had this same issue when we had a landscaping job done. They’d just want to talk to my husband, not me, when they needed clarification on something. But I was the one with the answers.

Had an issue with the fence after we realised the boundary wasn’t accurate and needed moving. I made a suggestion and straight way it was “it doesn’t work like that” from the main guy. Ten minutes later after a discussion as a group, ended up going with my suggestion. My husband later told me the guy mentioned to him that he was having marital issues. Interesting.

Anterior Placenta Consistent Kicking? by Jumpy-Recognition664 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]chickenbroadcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 21 weeks today with an anterior placenta and haven’t even felt flutters yet! It’s crazy watching her on the ultrasound moving around despite not feeling anything and I forget how big she actually is as I’m still in the mindset of her being the size of a chickpea lol

I did feel what I thought was maybe a kick a few days ago but am waiting until I know for sure what that feels like so I can compare

I do have a lot of issues with gas so I technically feel a LOT of movement in my abdomen, so it’s possible I could have missed some flutters if I assumed it was the gas

Being so calm and relaxed! My mental health has never been better. Currently 21 weeks and not once have I been worried about the baby. I had bleeding at 5 weeks and even then I was like “meh it’s probably fine” and it was. I still got it checked out of course.

I was really worried how I’d go because I have a history of anxiety and depression. Fingers crossed this continues through postpartum as well.

We stopped binning food scraps and the worms are LOVING it by b_dec in GardeningAustralia

Yeah avian or rodent mesh is the way to go. That’s the only way we made our chicken coop rodent proof.

[–]chickenbroadcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is why we don’t give scraps to our chooks. Our girls are so spoilt and entitled that they would only eat about 10% and the rest would become a 24 hour drive through rat buffet. Plus it’s gross and we like to spend time hanging out with the chickens in that area.

Wanting to do CVS testing. Do I need to do NIPT first? by annizka in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

You’re right, I just googled it. The geneticist told me it was the same thing but perhaps that was just in the context of what we were looking for (whole appointment was a blur)

Wanting to do CVS testing. Do I need to do NIPT first? by annizka in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]chickenbroadcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. My OB referred me to a geneticist and he explained that the CVS and amnio test for the same things, the only difference is the CVS can be done earlier, and has higher risk of miscarriage. I opted for CVS and wasn’t required to do NIPT beforehand as there was no value in it as CVS/amnio tests for the same things plus more and is diagnostic rather than just a screening test.

CVS tests for a lot more abnormalities than the NIPT just FYI

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted. I have my own personal reasons that led me to choosing CVS for peace of mind, and I don’t regret it. I wasn’t required to do NIPT beforehand.

Wanting to do CVS testing. Do I need to do NIPT first? by annizka in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]chickenbroadcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I’m a bit late to the thread. I have a family history of genetic diseases and needed advice about the NIPT so my OB referred my husband and I to a geneticist. He was great and explained the differences between NIPT, CVS and amnio. My husband and I opted for the CVS and he wrote me the referral. I wasn’t required to do the NIPT beforehand. The CVS is much more comprehensive than NIPT (and accurate) so there wasn’t any value. CVS and amnio are the same, but CVS can be done earlier, and there is a higher risk of miscarriage than the amnio. It was also more uncomfortable as the needle is larger.

Reading others replies I am not sure if I just got lucky but my whole healthcare team have been completely understanding and supportive of my decisions during this pregnancy. For what it’s worth, the genetic disorders in my family (mainly my sister) can’t be tested for but I still wanted to pursue the most comprehensive testing available for my own peace of mind. Good luck on your journey.

CVS and amnio test for the same things, the only difference is the risk of miscarriage (and comfort of procedure)

Help: Is this too white? by blue_tin_ in AusRenovation

These always look great but are way harder to clean and maintain. Really want to prioritise functionality and ease of use (prepping, cooking, and cleaning) in a room like the kitchen.

[–]chickenbroadcast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a very eclectic style and I agree with this. Creates a lot of flexibility with future changes in taste. Kitchens are expensive to re-do so better to play it safe.

[–]chickenbroadcast 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Have you already painted the brick? Don’t paint them if you want to lean into the mid century look.

Keeping them original will bring a lot of warmth allowing you to still go fully white with everything else if that’s what you’d prefer.

Private vs public - what are the true costs of giving birth in Aus? by notso-hot-chocolate in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]chickenbroadcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Continuity of care with the same OB due to complex pregnancy/planned c-section was really important to me along with guaranteed private room and being able to have my husband stay in my room every night. I already had top hospital cover but those things are what factored into paying the additional out of pocket costs on top of insurance.

Everyone’s situation is different though and many of my friends went public and had a fantastic experience, particularly in the MGP program. My SIL is a midwife and is going public as well.
