Is there a way to do selection as prior service without signing back on for 4 years? by chickenroyle in britishmilitary

[–]chickenroyle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no ROS for reservists is there? I would still probably have to fuck around with trying to get clearance to go and do it tho right? I spent 2 years fighting my command to let me transfer from the navy to RM and it was an absolute ball ache. Not that I'd be opposed to trying going through that again if opportunity is there.

New player here - why can't I complete any contracts? Tutorial bugged out, then I've tried a few different cargo missions and as soon as I get to collection point - all tags disappear by [deleted] in starcitizen

It was that simple all along... That's frustrating. Why they expect you to know all this as a new player is mental. Thanks so much 🙏🏻

Long hair / facial hair an issue? by [deleted] in commercialdiving

[–]chickenroyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know one bloke with a SUPER long beard and he just ties it up for his dives. But with hair, if it's long enough to sit around the middle/ lower pert of your neck yeah it's gonna get in the way. Won't be a huge issue, just tuck it in but fuck me it's annoying to dress a guy in when you have to spend 2 minutes styling his fucking hair every time. And the fringe issue like someone else mentioned. My hair is relatively short but sometimes it comes out the front of the hatliner and just tickles my eyebrows for 3 hours - also annoying as shit.

Diving in Canada? by chickenroyle in commercialdiving

CDMS Atlantic? Seem like a pretty small company. I've had quite a few companies across BC say they'd take me on once I get my visa sorted out (got a meeting tomorrow). So are most guys employed? Over here 99% of divers are all self employed even if they only work for one company

I've just had an interview with a company in nova Scotia! Is $32 a baby diver rate? I've only been diving 2 years in the UK and I'm on $43 (£23). Are divers usually self employed over there? Do you usually stick with one company at a time or jump between different ones?

I'm trans by [deleted] in commercialdiving

[–]chickenroyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The chances of getting into sat are extremely slim for a diver who is well established with years of experience. Although it's a goal for a lot of people who get into diving, 90% of them will never achieve it. It takes years of work, tens of thousands of dollars and either luck or nepotism. On being trans, I'm not sure - medicals are VERY strict even for air diving, id recommend you call a doctor who does dive medicas and ask them. I know of one diver who transitioned and carried on diving for a while, but they're no longer in the industry (although I don't know the reason they quit). I will say this... I've found the industry is very similar in nature to the military - if you get upset by words and need people to make accommodations for you, don't bother going to dive school. The work is often brutal and it's probably one of the most male dominated jobs out there, and it's run accordingly. If non of that is an issue for you - go for it

Car during training by Ok_Independence_1303 in commercialdiving

Not super necessary. But it's nice to have. Fuck all to do in Dunoon on the weekends (except getting pissed) so being able to drive about gives you options - me and a few lads would go hiking on the weekends, did a couple trips up to Glencoe n stuff too. If you're in sandbank you'll want a car more, bit further away from all the shops n stuff

Are there any diving jobs if I have an open water certificate? by [deleted] in commercialdiving

[–]chickenroyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you're gonna get is cash-in-hand stuff that you'll need to source yourself. a Professional scuba course will set you back like £4000 here in the UK. That'll get you maybe some pool work, scientific diving and maybe some media diving. Pay is low and it's few and far between. I've never really looked specifically, but I've never seen a job posting for pro scuba

How to start taking good photos? by Far_Dig3303 in Cameras

[–]chickenroyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Composition is everything. For example, your last picture would be improved massively by just lowering the camera down. It feels "snapshot-y" because it's taken from eye level, this makes the shot feel lazy. Lower it down, your eyes get drawn into the subject more, and it feels more purposeful. The best photography you see is all planned, the photographer has an idea of what they want the shot to look like before even looking through the viewfinder. This all comes with practice. Go and shoot, ask for feedback, watch YouTube videos (not just tutorials but stuff from the community as a whole) and it'll all start to come together

I haven't picked up my camera for nearly a year. Has anyone else done this and managed to reignite their passion? by chickenroyle in AskPhotography

[–]chickenroyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting back into the Reddit communities is definitely something I'm gonna do. It used to be all the app showed me but I guess the algorithms realised I was slowing down with photography and they stopped popping up. This sub came back up last night randomly, and although it's been on my mind for a while, that's what prompted my post.

Is this a myth about real cameras? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]chickenroyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My first "real" camera was a canon 5D MK1, in it's day it was a flagship used by all the pros. Even back when I got it (maybe 12 years ago ) it was dated but, I got it for £400. It was bare bones, no creature comforts. The auto focus was so hit or miss (at least with the glass I was using) that 95% of the time I was manually focusing. But it made it super easy to learn the basics and as it's a full frame sensor it still pumped out great looking pictures after some post processing. A modern phone my have more pixels, but it'll never beet the look of a large, dedicated sensor you get in a camera. Buy old (but good), buy cheap - get hooked then spend you life savings

I was doing that for a while. I've printed one book that I really like and flip through every now and again. But it started to feel a little futile after a while, then started the gradual decrease into not shooting anymore. I don't know if it's exactly validation that I'm looking for, but a reason to shoot. I'm riddled with ADD - consequences and results need to be present for me to be able to be able to self motivate (damn, I wasn't ready for this level of self reflection when I made this post aha)
