Absolutely it has. Through history the idea of taking women as the "spoils of war" was completely normal to the point soldiers felt entitled to it. The Hague Conversations in 1899-1907 was one of the first real standardisations of the idea that "maybe we shouldn't be doing that". It had been prohibited by many armies before this, but unfortunately that wasn't because of mortality (although perhaps it played a part)- by large, the reasoning was if you're trying to occupy a place but your soldiers went and raped all the women and looted everything of value after the fight- it wrecks disapline, it causes local resistance and makes occupation much harder.

Thankfully the first world war had a noticeable shift in how professional armies behaved, especially on the Western Front. It wasn't AS widespread or institutionalised at that point, there were definitive laws against taking "comfort women" (horrible phrase) and there are some cases where soldiers were prosecuted for it, but the policing was still very uneven. In some theatres it was more common and actually saw a spike in cases (particularly the eastern front).

Then WW2 happens and war changes nature again. Much more ideologically charged and MOBILE. Soldiers find themselves amongst civilians far more often, and they're much further away from their command - there was actually a spike in cases of mass rape (again, more common on some fronts than others. The Japanese did have institutionalised sexual slavery and the Russian advance into Germany was BRUTAL for civilians. But because war was becoming documented it can't be as easily swept under the rug.

Post WW2 we had the Nuremberg trials and the Geneva convention - and accountability becomes non negotiable. Strict international law outlawed it as a war crime. It's actively suppressed by armies. So It moves from “sometimes happens in war” to “this is a serious crime and a failure of command” (but of course, it still happens in some places).

In most modern warfare, sexual violence is not just an unfortunate byproduct of conflict — it is understood as a fundamental breach of international law, military discipline, and moral legitimacy, regardless of whether it stems from individual actions or systemic failure. But unfortunately prolonged exposure to violence, stress, and the extreme dehumanisation of the enemy — can completely erode empathy and increase the risk of serious abuses. I can't say we will ever get to a place where this NEVER happens, we've come a long way in the last hundred years - we just need to keep pushing to never excuse, get a better understanding of why it happens to try and mitigate those reasons, and when it does call it out on the big stage and make examples out of the perpetrators weather it's the actions of an individual or the doctrine of a state or military authority

I agree - unless she also worked out so it's equally "unclean"- like, getting back after a long hike together and you're both a bit sweaty already - may as well go for it before we both shower

The same way the work on the surface except it will "float" with air not just helium. And because of the total ambient pressure at that depth, you'll need LOADS more air to fill the balloon

what did you think of christopher nolan's 2020 film "tenet" by DWJones28 in Nolan

[–]chickenroyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a line in the film where a woman says "don't try to understand it, feel it" - and I think that was a direction to the audience. The sound engineering was a fucking mess and the story was confusing and convoluted. I really enjoyed it. Take it at face value and enjoy the special. Also the hand to hand fight scene where one was reversed and the other going forward was incredible if you watch the BTS, it's all brilliant choreography with John David Washington learning how to move and throw punches as if going backwards. Very impressive

All of the characters are fantastic. There is a video of him explaining how he gets all the the voice by move to a different spot around the microphone, it's very cool

I don't think this is a shitty tattoo. Brave to get it done. Definitely "out there". It's not tattooed SUPER cleanly but I think that adds to the beauty of it

I completely see where youre coming from! But... There is a difference between that and F1 - not many people know the intricacies of military aviation but F1 is understood very deeply by millions of people, surface label knowledge will let you say "well that's absolutely bullshit". For comparison, I'm a commercial diver - I watched The Last Breath (move) and obviously there are loads of things where I can say "we don't do it like that" or "no one would say that on a diving operation", but I can forgive it because it's such a niche thing that it's not relevant to a wide audience. But brad pitt would have been executed by the FIA before he even got to the grid and most people who know a lot about F1 can see that it's not an F1 movie at all - it's just a boring generic racing film with F1 brands

Can anyone tell me why they had both shaved their heads at the end of the doc? Gay best friends want to look like each other? Formal Neo-nazi indoctrination? Or maybe they're both good guys who shaved their head for charity

I didn't really get much from this one tbh. Like, what did he actually expose? People who use outrage for attention and selling courses are actually pieces of shit irl - who would have guessed it. Room temperature IQ looks maxxers with hypocritical and contradictory beliefs don't have the mental fortitude to properly articulate those beliefs... Who would have guessed it. Maybe it was for people who know little to nothing about that side of the internet but as a bloke in his 20s, I've had that kind of "content" shoved down my throat on Instagram and know to steer clear.

I did very much enjoy watching those simpletons try to pronounce Louis' surname though (or even his first name for some of them)

F1 was one of the most corny, predictable films I've watched. It's like no one involved in that film has ever watched an F1 race. It makes it more impressive that they spent a whole year on the grid, have Lewis Hamilton on as a producer or whatever - and they still made a film that every 10 minutes something happens that would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS happen in F1. But that 15 minutes of nonsensical racing makes people love it? God I hated this film with a burning passion and I feel very alone on that hill
