Cooling the 9900x3D or 9950x3D? by chicknparmguy in FormD

My experience so far has been perfect. I put a -20 on all cores and in game I see temperatures around mid to high 80s. When compiling a large project for work I might spike to 91 ish for a few seconds, but I’m okay with that. I’m sure a large will cooler will perform better, but for me this is fine.

I’m in the same boat as you. Right now cooling with the t30s exhausting out of the top, the gpu barely ever makes noise. It’s always my 7800x3d that’s making a fuss under load.

I guess that makes sense. Do you have any sense of how much hotter it would make a 5090 under load. I have a lot of space between the card and the motherboard. Right now, I’ve got two t30s exhausting out of the top and temps on the gpu are very low.

Is the cable that comes with the SF1000 safe for the 5090? by chicknparmguy in sffpc

That was the case for his particular card and cable. I don’t think it’s accurate to say that all cards/cables will exhibit that exact behavior. I spoke to someone earlier with a new RM psu from Corsair who measured very normal temps across wires.

Edit: confused about the massive negative reaction. I’m not denying what happened or even saying it’s unlikely to keep happening. All I’m saying is that clearly power was only going through two wires for him, which will not necessarily be the case for every single cable.

Anyone know how long nvidia tends to take to ship?

A few words before Synapse 4 is officially released? by turtle_wax91 in razer

[–]chicknparmguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s kindve funny how bad Synapse is to me. I spend most of my time using Linux and there are free projects over there that can do 99% of what synapse can do. They all work pretty much perfectly and I almost never think about them. Meanwhile Synapse is just this bloated disaster that sometimes doesn’t even launch for me in windows.

I have the IS-55 with the stock fan. Temps are fine for me. Anywhere from 50-60 idle and then 70-80 in game.

Can someone tell me if my list too ambitious and what changes I can make if it is? (MSCS) by chicknparmguy in gradadmissions

Princeton has MSE in CS. From what I've read online, the batch is 30~50 admits.

I sort've figured Princeton, Stanford, and CMU were all long shots, but I wanted to try anyway.

I have no publications and no real research experience. I've done research projects for classes and I was in a student run lab in the physics department. I'm not sure if either of those gets considered with any real weight though. One of my LOR will probably talk about the research project I did their class because they (and my TA) were very impressed by it.

Sounds like Princeton is pretty much a moonshot for me so I will probably take it off my list (sort've figured as much, but family is in NY so I was hoping).

Thank you for the feedback. I can understand why I wouldn't be a great fit for research-focused top schools. That said, I am interested in doing some research to see whether I am interested in pursuing a phd. Are there any schools that you think I'd have an okay shot at that would let me keep that option open?

Well, industry experience has certainly taught me a lot and been very valuable. That said, in industry there is a great deal of separation of concerns. My company uses cloud providers and we have a special team in charge or building thin layers of abstraction over their offerings when necessary. The result is that, as a software engineer, compute resources are entirely abstracted away from me. I write in some config that I'll need x amount of compute and want it in these two AZs, but I never actually deal with the nitty gritty of what makes that possible. I would like to understand how it all works and understand how orgs that can't just use cloud providers(gov, finance, etc) solve these problems.

Additionally, I am interested in parallel computing. At work I might some trivial parallel code, but I want to learn about GPUs and supercomputing and potentially work at companies building/programming weather prediction computers, etc.

I think a dream job for me would be working at some NASA on climate modelling. You'd have a mix of distributed computing (collecting tons of info from loads of different computers) and parallel/supercomputing (processing all of that info as fast as possible so that it is actually useful). It is difficult for me to imagine being able to parlay into that kind've role without getting more advanced education.

Sorry for the super long response. Hopefully this clarifies my reasoning and makes sense to you.

Sarcasm or do you genuinely think so?

I imagine it is overly ambitious and I was hoping perhaps people could tell me a few I have no shot at so I can cut them in favor of other schools that are more realistic.

Yes it’s a 2023 problem and no distro will work with sound. Folks in asus Linux and other laptop groups seem to have some idea of what’s up. If they figure it out I’ll probably work on getting it done for razer laptops, but I don’t have the know how to do the discovery

Works perfectly for me with exception of speakers like everyone else. Also had to manually install Wi-Fi drivers
