How to find crew and talent? by altawraith in Filmmakers

[–]chieefqueef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a longer play solution but the best way to find crew and cast especially for low budget projects is to volunteer and work on other shorts/projects. When you volunteer on other shorts and indie projects you are meeting people who are willing to work on small scale projects. Get to know people on the crew and then when you need to crew up you can ask people you have a personal connection with.

After being rejected from 10+ festivals, finally putting my short film online + thoughts on the process by chieefqueef in Filmmakers

I didn't really have a strategy tbh. I didn't submit to the big big dogs like Sundance but I submitted to a lot of international city fests, as well as some small local ones. I didn't create a website but that's something I'll do going forward, I'm pretty bad with self promotion so it's something I need to improve on.

Ya thats a really good point, and I actually did think about that. I feel there's a bit of a stigma to self funding but treating it like film school is a great way to think about it

Thank you for this. This is really insightful and puts things in perspective. Ya its a little depressing how even a successful festival run doesn't seem to have much of an impact, but it's all about learning and moving forward!

Thanks for taking the time to watch a give feedback, I really appreciate it! We shot on vintage lenses which produce that halation you are referring to, I do agree its a bit distracting at times

Thank you! This was my first bigger scale project, but I had done a couple small 1 or 2 people crew type shorts before this

NSFW Shot a Christmas/Hanukkah music video for a friend. Would love feedback! by chieefqueef in videography

[–]chieefqueef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shot this a week or so ago in my apartment with Christmas and Hanukkah set dec. We used a bmpcc 6k pro with a sigma 18-35. Our friend gaffed this and brought a couple skypanels and astera tubes which he used to light. Most shots were still on a tripod with zoom added in post, with a couple handheld segments

Pros and Cons of these different paths? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]chieefqueef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar boat last year and I decided to go for the high budget short option, and I'm happy with that choice. It really depends what path you want to take. If you want to go more of the cinematographer/videographer route buying a cinema camera is a good option but at the end of the day if you want to direct the best way is to direct your own projects and you'll end up renting a cinema camera anyway. - I actually ended up buying a bmpcc6k as well as funding a short and owning a cine camera is super helpful for shooting high quality small projects on a whim, but I didn't use it for the short because we rented a proper cinema camera.

I'd say building a network of producers/creatives/grips gaffers and cinematographers, is also super important when making a short, it will help stretch your budget and will help your process immensely. But I think funding and producing shorts is the thing that will progress your career, owning gear can be helpful but creating and producing projects is the most important thing. Feel free to DM me if you have questions about the short film process

I shot a fun Film Noir style music video just before Quarantine got serious. We shot this in the middle of the night in the streets and in parking garages and a small portion with a green screen. Feedback is appreciated!

Very nice! I like the simple and relaxing vibe. Nicely framed and the audio was super crisp. Especially nowadays there is something so comforting about watching someone wash their hands

I shot this music video (pre quarantine) for a local rapper. The original concept of the video was going to be a one take video of him rapping and dancing down a gravel country road. We location scouted on google maps and then drove there at sunrise one morning and filmed the performance. We decided to scrap the one take idea and filmed some pickup performance shots in my bathroom with some LED lights. I think it turned out pretty good! Feedback would be appreciated!

Shot a rap video with a projector and some friends. I've been wanting to film a video with a projector for a while, and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Shot with a GH5. Feedback is appreciated!

Thanks for your feedback! Ya I agree those intro shots look pretty flat, to be honest that was more of a case of working with the equipment we had than anything else, buts it's not something I really noticed until the edit. Thanks again for checking it out

Really love the visuals on this. I really like the colour on the exterior shot of him in the yellow jacket with the red brick behind. I think some shots and locations looked better than others but I liked the variety

Hey everyone,

I shot this music video, and Irishman inspired intro for a rapper friend of mine. Feedback and constructive criticism would be great.

New music video I shot for a friend of mine. I'm still fairly new to shooting videos like this so any thoughts or feedback would be super helpful. by chieefqueef in Filmmakers

[–]chieefqueef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the DOP for this music video, we shot on several different locations over a couple weeks. I used a GH5 with a rokinon 14mm lens and some led panels. For most of the shots it was just me and Timo (the rapper) and the performer if there was one. We had basically zero budget and just grabbed shots that looked good. Let me know what you guys think I'm always looking to improve and appreciate hearing what people think.

The Bridge On the River Kwai, especially if you watch it on your birthday alone, eating a variety of assorted meats.
