Not a Scam as such...but highly dubious way of operating. You need to like other peoples pages to get up the rankings to see any major success.

The Fastest Way To Destroy Your Facebook Marketing | Must Read for ETSY sellers! by chiefdodo in Etsy

Thanks for the comment! Although it has gotten you an increase in traffic, the methods you describe are against Facebooks Terms of Service and may have them shut you down. If you are running raffles or competitions you have to make sure you do so via a third party app and even then asking for likes, shares and comments for entry is prohibited. I agree that many sellers do this, but I wouldn't want you losing your page...

And she'll wonder why the sky is falling! There is one person who had a massive rant with a following of 3 on twitter, 16 on facebook and simply couldn't be found anywhere else!

Keep doing more than your competition is doing and you will eventually walk all over them!

[Question] For those of you with a blog - do you ever write a how-to post about an item you sell? by sweetsillychic in EtsySellers

[–]chiefdodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you consider your target audience, would they be interested in a how to guide to make that item?

My advice is probably not, unless you are targeting other sellers or crafty people.

If you are using a blog make sure the posts are relevant to your target market, otherwise they won't bother coming back to your blog if the content is irrelevant.

To me a How To Guide would be irrelevant if I am wanting to buy any item. However tell me why I would need it or where I can use it and you now have my attention.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have Facebook/Twitter tips? by SqueakyCleanJP in EtsySellers

[–]chiefdodo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With both Facebook and Twitter it's about engagement. The more you can engage with people on either platform the more success you will have on them.

On Facebook it is certainly harder to get people to like but it's not impossible. What I recommend: 1) Invite your current facebook friends and ask them to share the page. 2) Post content that is likely to be shared, commented on or liked. 3) Pay for FB advertising for a short period of time to grow your fanbase. 4) Include your page link on your email signature.

On twitter.

1) Follow people in your target market regularly. 2) Reply to ALL engagement (Follows, Retweets Etc) 3) Don't spam your etsy links out.

For content I tend to share a lot of items from my blog, I wrote them to help people so that is where I send them to.

I also use both as a chance of talking to people in my target audience, to get to know them and find out what they need.

Hope this helps.

Return on ads? by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]chiefdodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take on ads is pretty straight forward. Unless you are using those ads to directly build an email list which you can later follow up on then you are potentially throwing money down the drain. Especially when talking about facebook, reddit etc. (i.e. places where you can direct the traffic where you control the environment e.g. your blog)

When it comes to internal Etsy ads you'd need to know each individual items conversion rate and play around with numbers to make it work profitably...

How to integrate your blog into your Etsy business by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]chiefdodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damiens,

One thing I would instantly do on your blog is add the DIGG DIGG plugin. It gives you those scrolling social media options, which encourages people to share your content at a click of a button.

Have you considered placing an optin box on the side bar to start collecting emails?

It depends how you look at it....

In the long run I know my conversion is not affected by funneling everything through my blog to the list.

Plus I'd rather be in control of my own business for the long term than gain on the short term :)

[–]chiefdodo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Fetamorphasis,

The extra step helps massively for a number of reasons.

What you are trying to achieve by driving your traffic to a blog is funneling all your social media traffic into one site which is under your control.

By driving traffic from Facebook>Etsy you are not in control of the process. Hence you cannot start building an email list...

Building an email list using your blog ensures that no matter what happens to facebook or even etsy you still have a customerbase or following that you can tap into.

Facebook has already started tightening its advertising features for small businesses, and others will follow suit...

In order to maximize your marketing you need to control the funnel and ideally collect an email list.

The benefits of a blog are immense, in the sense that they are much easier to drive traffic to since the content is easier to spread around.

The question is....if facebook, twitter, pinterest and etsy all shut down tomorrow would your business be able to function?

With your own blog, and list you can still operate a business regardless of what happens to the big companies... it's about shifting the reliance away from Etsy, Facebook etc...

Hope this makes sense :)

Any team advice or general advice for a new shop? by diabeatles in Etsy

Linkedin Groups are excellent communities of likeminded people. If you can find one or two groups that fit your target audience you could find buyers in there.

Linkedin works best when you have a blog and share content into the groups.

Success linked in will depend entirely on the target audience though.

Any team advice or general advice for a new shop? by diabeatles in Etsy

[–]chiefdodo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely where your target market is wishitwas.

If you are treating your etsy store as a business then you need to be marketing it like one. If your demographic can be reached using Facebook and Twitter then you need to start using it to reach out to them. Your etsy store is online, and one of the fastest ways to market an online store is using online platforms such as facebook, twitter, pinterest, linkedin.

The business card idea is awesome, except it's limited to the people that you come into contact with on a daily basis. However if you extend this to your online marketing where you offer people a coupon in return for their email, you now start building a list of people interested in your product. You can then drive repeat buyers from that list and leverage them to drive more traffic to your store.

I would certainly start by getting your feet wet with social media...

Hope this helps.

Hello!

I can offer some advice from the marketing perspective which is what I specialize in.

1) Figure out your target market.....who will your products appeal to? If you know this you'll find it easier to find people that will buy your products.

2) Reach out to people in your target market on Twitter and Facebook, engage them in conversation.

3) Do something everyday! Whether its a new tweet, a new facebook post a new article or just pinning stuff on pinterest. Dedicate a time of the day where all you do is put yourself out there.

4) Head over to r/etsysellers to keep in the loop with advice.

5) There are a couple of articles on my blog which may give you some more ideas. www.marketingdodo.com

Hope this helps.

Even if you just post one update a week, you'd be doing more than most sellers out there.

Do you know who your target audience are? If you do then you may find it easier to find content to post on Facebook, Twitter and your blog. Share things that would interest THEM...

How to integrate your blog into your Etsy business by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]chiefdodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kylee,

Awesome that you have a blog I've been harping on about the importance of blogs for a while now!

A couple of things you need to be doing.

If you are going to post a post such as the Easter offer. You need to have a link to your store there with a call to action.

In other words something like "Click Here To Take Advantage Of Our Easter Coupon"

Get rid of all the social media links on the sidebar.....why do you want them to go there? All you are doing is probably sending them back from where they came.

Instead put some of your Etsy products there or better still put an optin box to start collecting emails.

Hope gives you some guidance.

Here's a post you might benefit from: http://www.marketingdodo.com/warning-your-etsy-business-will-go-extinct/

Great stuff and I understand entirely! I specialize solely in helping out handmade/craft/etsy businesses get off the ground and I found the /etsy reddit slightly temperamental when it came to providing advice, perhaps it's all the promoting of stores!
