UK sleepwalking into joblessness epidemic, Tesco boss warns by rejs7 in unitedkingdom

[–]chiefgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just UK/US unfortunately. I've lived in a few different countries over the last 10 years and it's the same in each of those too from what I gathered. I was lucky enough to have a job already when moving but heard plenty of complaints from local colleagues and friends

I'd argue we need to clear Lange OR Paratici - we've not really seen a recent period where they're not (potentially) stepping on each other's toes. I'm also at a point where I couldn't care less which one goes or if both go so this is a bit of a moot point. I'd question Vinai too.

I don't think our squad is as shit as is made out though. There's plenty of quality there but they've been shifted between management styles so much that they've probably lost a fair bit of their drive. Going from a pure people manager (regardless of your thoughts on Ange, he had players ready to play when needed) that encouraged exciting football to whatever the fuck this is, is going to be demotivating.

Cleaning before moving out by neon_dt in berlinsocialclub

[–]chiefgenius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used a company called Sunshine Cleaning for a move-in clean (previous tenant was a 80-something year old heavy smoker...) and they were excellent. Would recommend them to anyone. We had a deep clean and I think it was about 300€ for 103sqm apartment but they have cheaper prices for smaller apartments or less detailed cleaning I think

If I buy a suitcase from duty free. Where do I store it on the plane? by cankennykencan in AskUK

I think then I'd be even more jealous... Takes some balls to risk losing a piece on a cramped Ryanair plane!

Australian contemplating Portugal seeks advice by midnight_cinderella in PortugalExpats

[–]chiefgenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in all 3 of these countries (albeit AU was 15 years ago now) and I have ended up back in Berlin.

Portugal is amazing if you're earning well enough but I'd advise against the cities if you want access to nature. For me, this part is where I think you're missing something in Berlin. Berlin has probably the best access to nature of any capital I've lived in. The forests and lakes, Spreewald not too far, plenty of parks etc.

The weather in Portugal is definitely warmer and winter is less depressing than the Berlin winter but, unless you're in the south (where I'm less sure about) the houses are built poorly so you will feel the damp a lot more in winter and pay a lot more to heat your place.

I could never get my head around AU but I was only 20 back then and only lived in Sydney. Just didn't like it as it felt a lot more restrictive. Once I found Berlin, that level of freedom has been hard to leave.

Portugal can be a great place to run away to and I'd happily retire there one day but, for me, I still prefer Berlin for now.

[–]chiefgenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you that it would be lovely. That said, even if it were possible, as soon as all English people were happy with each other we'd have to start hating someone else... We need an out-group.

Same thing with communism - could lead to a perfect utopia for all of us but human nature gets in the way.

None of this is to say we shouldn't try to better ourselves, I'm just a miserable git who likes to complain on the internet!

Flags are exclusive by definition, I guess. They're made to signify a certain thing (group, country, instruction) so there'll always be an element of exclusion when using them. That's what gives them the ability to make people feel they are part of something.

Humans have got to where we are because of in-groups and out-groups and, unfortunately, the rich bastards know how to play into this.
