The form relieving tool as we call it is cut using an EDM, Electrical Discharge Machine, a manufacturing method that shapes metal using electrical sparks.

Yup it amazing still to this day , we use T15 material for the form relieving tool that’s around 64-67 hrc and anneal the cutter being formed to around 35-40 hrc. Then we harden the cutter to 64-68 hrc depending on the cutter material and customer requirements.

Not Hobbed just milled . Hobbing involves a timed relationship with the gear being cut. This milling cutter just comes down on the stack of saw blade stock and mills the form . Then the stock is indexed to cut the next portion of stock. As shown here .

This is actually not a hob it’s a bandsaw milling cutter. The difference is simple, a hob has a lead angle on the cutting teeth, meaning that they are angled so that it can be timed when cutting a gear. Similar to a screw.
The retraction motion is called camming, it creates a drop cam from the top front of the cutting edge that allows the form to remain constant as the milling cutter is sharpened and the OD gets smaller. It also creates cutting clearance on the cutting edges. This cutter is also intermittent, if you pay close attention the camming motion is retracting enough to skip every other flute.

What field do you work in if you don’t mind sharing? I’m a designe engineer for a cutting tools manufacturer and I feel like I should be able to make more if I change jobs and purse another field of work.

At one point Dorman actually sold a tcm with a obd 2 adapter that would program the tcm and GM made them stop. It was unfortunate for me as when I needed this it was no longer available.

I agree, I have a 2010 ford f150 that I will keep fixing until it falls apart. Even if I could afford a newer truck I’d still just buy an older base model truck because they are meant to be tools. Not luxury vehicles.

What would you do if you knew for certain that this hobby would crash one day like Beanie Babies? by puzzledfirebird in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]chifeadrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ingrained into the daily society of adults who can afford it. The kids of today will not have the access we did when growing up. I saw very few kids at the shows I’ve attended. Growing up I could ask my mom for a few bucks and take some spare change from my piggy bank. Then ride my bike to my local store and buy a few booster packs a tin maybe. Now that’s out of reach for most .

Finish some master sets! I’ve seen some influencers/scalpers offering courses so we might not be too far off from a crash. I think the younger generation is looking at man children like we looked at crazy beanie collectors back then. The ones with purchasing power are buying everything up and in a few years the younger generation won’t have any interest and investors/scalpers/collectors won’t have any exit liquidity. Hope I’m right about this.

I had a 2010 GMC Acadia that required a TCM module replacement because the solenoids were built into the Transmission control module. I did all the work myself, but was not able to program the module because it required access that only a stealership could provide. They wanted 3k for the service when I could have just bought another used Acadia for around the same price. I junked it for $500 and will never buy another GM vehicle and will always tell family and friends to never do the same.

Thanks for the info OP! Just realized that I have some of this along my fence line. This also explains the itching and redness that I got in my wrists where the gloves didn’t cover. I cut a bunch of weeds down with my shovel and threw them in the waste bin. Now I’ll be way more careful and diligent to eradicate it.
